Question about running a CentOS4.8 (32-bit) guest under CentOS5.4xen (64-bit)
I am trying to run my old CentOS4.8 (32-bit) system as a guest system
under CentOS5.4xen (64-bit). I followed the instructions in Appendix A
of the xen user manual (/usr/share/doc/xen-3.0.3/pdf/user.pdf) and
created a 'disk image' (actually a 10gig LVM logical volume:
sauron.deepsoft.com% sudo fdisk -l /dev/mapper/sauron-c4guest
Disk /dev/mapper/sauron-c4guest: 10.7 GB, 10737418240

replace x86 with x64 system and reuse existing LVM
I want to replace an existing 32bit with a 64bit installation (Centos 5).
There's an existing LVM with lots of partitions. Most are used for Xen
guests. The system itself uses only one of them plus a separate /boot
partition that is not on LVM.
What's the best course of action here? Should I do the reinstall with
kickstart or better manually and reuse the existing filesystem? As I

cannot install glibc.i686 on x86_64
I cannot install glibc.i686 on a x86_64 system because I get
Error: Missing Dependency: glibc-common = 2.5-81 is needed by package
glibc-2.5-81.i686 (base)
glibc-common.x86_64 is installed, but it's apparently looking for i686.
There's indeed no glibc-common for i686.
There's also glibc.i386 and glibc-common.i386 available, but I think I
don't need them.
I have other x86_64

ssh with shared home dir
hey listers!
silly quesion: if I generate an RSA key on an NFS shared home
directory, then cat >> it into the .ssh/authorized_keys file in the
same location, shouldn't I then be able to ssh into each host that
shares the NFS home directory without entering a passphrase (assuming
the key doesn't have one)? and assuming the permissions on the
authorized_keys file belong to the user

filter unwanted email
I am new to CentOS. How do I set a rule to so that any email coming from @
linkedin.com (and other abused locations), going to an application RT (setup
on the system), will get rejected or dropped silently.

CentOS 6.4 x86_64 VM Install freezes
I am trying to install a CentOS 6.4 x86_64 VM using a CentOS 5.9 x86_64
host, but its install has froze *twice*. What I am doing is to create a
10gig LVM volume, which I put a MS-DOS partition table on (using fdisk).
I then format the only partition to ext3, install grub and install the
pxeboot kernel and initrd.img and a simple grub.conf to load this.
I have the CentOS 6.4 x86_64 ISOs mounted

issues with 3rd party repos for centos
i'm reading the lowdown on 3rd party repos with respect to centos
here:
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories
and i have a couple questions and observations. first, the entry for
centosplus reads:
"Popular packages from this repository include: postfix with database
support, a rebuilt kernel with additional drivers & filesystem
support, php5 and mysql5."

Running MacOSX as VM under CentOS 5.10?
Is it even remotely possible to run MacOSX (or Darwin) as VM under CentOS 5.10
/ xen? Or am I better off not even trying and just getting a MacMini or
MacBook to just jack into my LAN? I just need a 'build box' and possibly
something to do light testing (eg does the program run? Does the GUI come
up?). I don't really have the *physical* room for an iMac, unless the screen
is tiny.

updating without rebooting
Hi all,
I'm curious. If I do yum update (which include kernel update) but don't reboot.
Is it OK? I mean apart of the kernel, other things like services, we
don't have to reboot if we don't have the chance to do it (postponing
to some other date), right?
Thank you.

Strange Kernel for Centos 5.5
One of my VPS stopped working. After the data centre replaced a disk
normal service resumed, then I notices this:
CentOS release 5.5 (Final)
Kernel 2.6.35.4 on an x86_64
I always thought Centos 5.x would always be on 2.6.18. Any thoughts?

self signing certificates
hi all,
I have gone through the process of self signing certificates.
Aside from the pop-ups about not trusted etc... everything appears to work.
For "internal" applications what do people/places do?
It would be nice to be seamless and have the "your not trusted" window
pop-up.
Yet this is not a public web site either. Just internal use.
The server might be on the internet

USB Serial ports (ttyACMn) CentOS 6.7 (64-bit) vs. CentOS 6.7 (64-bit)
I have two computers: both running CentOS 6.7, 64-bit, with
kernel 2.6.32-573.12.1.el6.x86_64. One is a laptop with an 2 core Intel
processor and the other is a desktop machine with a 4 core AMD processor. Both
with selinux enabled.
I have a USB serial port device (a RR-CirKits LCC-Buffer USB). On the desktop
I am getting this error:

when to reboot after updates
What is the rule of thumb for reboots after updates...
Certainly if I update from 5.2 to 5.3 I reboot.
But if you update something like krb5 or pam
does that require a reboot? Does the "fix" get automatically loaded and used
or do you just do a reboot always?
Thanks,
Jerry

Questions about software RAID, LVM.
I am planning to increase the disk space on my desktop system. It is
running CentOS 5.9 w/XEN. I have two 160Gig 2.5" laptop (2.5") SATA drives
in two slots of a 4-slot hot swap bay configured like this:
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

how long to reboot server ?
we have CENTOS 5 on DELL servers. some servers have longer than one year did not reboot. Our consultant suggest we need at least reboot once every year to clean out memory junk.
What is your opinion?

Firefox 78 under CentOS 6 -- no sound?
I did a yum update on my CentOS 6 laptop and it upgraded Firefox to 78, and
FF stopped seeing my mic and speakers. Is there some magic I need to do? As
a short term (?) fix, I downgraded back to Firefox 68. My system is otherwise
up-to-date.

Lilo for CentOS 5?
Does there exist a version of Lilo built for x86_64 CentOS 5? It does not
seem to be on the DVD. *I* really, really, prefer Lilo over Grub.
