Cons of disabling *.i386 and *.i686 in a 64bit Distribution
Can anybody give me a reason why this would be a bad idea. So the premise for this question is that I setup an exclude=*.i368,*.i686 in my yum.conf. While doing a yum update I come across missing package dependencies for instance mkinitrd for the i386 package. I noticed there is already one for x86_64. I realized during the kickstart install that some of these *.i386 got installed before I

Samba seems to cause complete server crash
Hi all, I have done some extensive searching, and drawn a blank so far... Nothing odd is reported in samba logs, or in the syslog file. However, if I try to play an avi straight off the samba server, on an XP client with MP10, it brings the whole deal to its knees after a few mins at the most. I have to hard reset the server. Other than this, all my other uses are flawless (game server,

Why are all repos < 5.6 listed?
Greetings all. I just enabled all repos on my system, to enable me to find a particular package. This is the first time I have noticed all the Centos repos < 5.6 being listed. Is this a new feature, to include all repos pre 5.6 now? Here's the output of the aforementioned yum command - sorry it's a little bit long: [root at karsites ~]# yum --enablerepo '*' --disablerepo

Is oprofile still working?
Hi all, Is anyone using oprofile? I'm getting segfaults from opreport at the moment, and I'm not sure if it is opreport, or just me. In case it is something just plain daft I am doing, here is how it goes: opcontrol --reset opcontrol --setup --no-vmlinux opcontrol --start ... now I run my program, /tmp/myprog ... opcontrol --dump opcontrol --shutdown then I run, opreport -l

VMware Server 2 fails on 5.6
So others can avoid the lesson I learned this morning, VMware Server 2 stopped working after upgrading to 5.6 from a working 5.5 install (with the libc workaround for 5.4+ already in place). Some Google-Fu indicates the problem is linked to more supporting libraries being changed (zlib, libxml2, possibly others) in addition to the existing libc issue. I get a segmentation fault trying to

Amazon EC2 - building a minimal centOS ebs bootable image
Hello Looking to build CentOS based micro EC2 instance bootable from Amazon EBS. Want that the image be minimal, so that I can add only the rpms I want. Despite looking could not find a way to import a CentOS image from scratch or an existing minimal CentOS image that is bootable from EBS. My server must must persist, as I cannot handle issues with a dynamic server, so I want to use a server

Shorewall help blacklist and restart/refresh
At the current time I am not subscribed to the mailing list. I have a blacklist that I got from www.peerguardian.net that is rather large ( 81 kb). When shorewall start command is issued it takes about 20 mins for it to load. Is this normal or should I do this another way? Also I noticed something very strange with shorewall .. I have cron do a shorewall restart command every 24 hours and

Crash with XEN 4.0 on Suse 11.3
Hello, I get a VM crash while trying to load a database. The "smaller" tables are loading OK, but When I try a bigger one (#3 000 000 rows) the ASCII dump file is #766 MB. When I try to load that table the machine crash and I find always the same message in the "qemu....log'' file : xc_map_foreign_batch: mmap failed: Cannot allocate memory xc_map_foreign_bulk error 12 I

Anyone Having Any Luck Downloaing the DVD ISO?
I've been trying for 2 weeks to download the dvd iso torrent... Shows a ton of seeders, few leechers, but very poor performance.. (I'm correctly setup for torrents and get fast downloads normally) Only like 4% downloaded and crawling. I've tried the trackers from every one of the mirror sites. I can't use the net install because the systems I am installing are on a closed network.

Problem with SSHD update.
This morning I applied the 13 or so new updates to my servers. On one of them the ssh service and clients stopped working immediately after the update. I restarted the server in anticipation that there might be some instability introduced by updating on a system with active ssh connections. However, this has not cleared the problem. The packages in question are: openssh.i386

Automounter problem in C5.5?
Last night I was having some bizarre problems with my USB ports. I couldn't access one of my scanners, and when I started moving plugs around, it seemed as though I lost more peripherals. For some reason, I did NOT lose the laser printer, but my one scanner and my scan/fax/printer disappeared and wouldn't come back. I figured it might be the automounter, so I tried plugging in a USB

Some relevant information
Hello everyone: * DNS does not have a "refresh rate". In DNS, the person running the domain determines what the "refresh rate" (it's called TTL in DNS) for their records is; for example, Google has a TTL of "once per hour" and my domains (maradns.org, etc.) have a TTL of one day. * As mentioned before, Scientific Linux 6.0 is out. What hasn't been

Does anybody know why activeRecord is not built on top of ruby-dbi?
I am curious about the opinionated opinion behind the decision. Was it performance? Complexity? Databases support or something else. I recently used Ruby:dbi and liked all the metadata that comes with the data. Performance looked good but I didn''t benchmark it so I don''t know which one execute faster. If I am not wrong Ruby:dbi offers true parameters binding which would be nice

logger anybody?
Hello, When trying to use logger into any RSpec I get: logger anyboundefined local variable or method `logger'' for #<#<Class:0x278bee0>:0x253cdec> Not sure if this is the spected behaviour (haven''t checked under the hood) It was just annoying not having a logger instance available as in Rails out of the tests. -- An?bal Rojas http://www.rubycorner.com

Anybody got a character counting widget?
Just demo''d my app for marketing and they asked whether, on the big text fields, I could give a dynamic character counter so that as they approach the guideline maximum they''ll know. Seems like something that could be written by looking for key click events in the text field. Before I go writing one, though, I thought I''d check and see if anybody knows of such a
