Central file server advice please
Hi List I have a Gygabyte GA-7N400 PRO2 with a 2.6 mHz Athlon cpu. I want to set up a central file storage for 2/3 users using 6/7 machines. A mixture of win2k, XP and various Linux distros (my home network). It will be used to store files, (docs, music and DVD ) for all of these machines, print server, (two ink-jets), mail server and later on a myth tv set up. Would SAMBA be the best option

OT raid controller
Sorry for an OT post, but given the recent discussions here re raid, I was wondering if anyone had any info on the ITE 8212 RAID controller (GigaRAID) This is a PATA HW RAID as found on the GigaByte GA-8I915P-PRO motherboard. (I can see an IC on the board labeled GigaRAID. Their manual claims that is has it's own CPU). I am not using it because I have SATA, but I am still curious about

[OT] How to recover data from an IDE drive
While IDE-to-USB is probably the easier option to use, I got an IDE-to-Sata adapter on eBay for almost nothing (of course, you have to wait for it to arrive directly from China). If you go this route, the thing I learned from the experience was to set the IDE drive to master (there won't be a slave unless you get a one-to-two converter - I didn't see one of the latter). Also, unless the

Can this work?
I would like to develop a system where by I can boot any of the machines on my system - and select from a menu what I would like that particular client to do. For example, maybe load a bootdisk image from a network share, and boot that. Or boot the first partition on the local disk.

Boot hangs on v9 system at CD device probe
I sent a note about this a couple of weeks ago, but have not heard anything. I'm really getting a bit desperate. I have a system that I am trying to upgrade from 8.2 to 9.0. I have built it and installed the kernel, but it fails to boot. The boot freezes after probing for my hard drives during the probe of the CDROM. It just sits there, seemingly forever, though I have never waited longer

Software RAID: on same IDE port or on different ones?
I have a general question on software RAID performance. If using two IDE disks on RAID 1: is there much of a difference performancewise if I put both on one IDE port as master and slave or should I better put them on seperate ports. I remember from olde days that it was recommended to put CD and hard disk on different ports to maximize the throughput between them and as RAID1 is theoretically

software vs. hardware with ide Raid 1
What kind of implementation software or hardware is recommended for ide Raid 1 with ext3? Some controllers from Promise like their new FastTrak TX2000 look nice. But won't I be tied into the kernel version that is only supported under their drivers? Is ide software Raid stable and fast with ext3 for a production system? Thanks in advance. Aaron Lopez

Setting up software IDE RAID
I have some old rack boxes which are going to get some bigger harddrives (IDE/ATA, not SATA) in Spring and I'm wondering if I should put two disks in them and use them as RAID 1 (software RAID). Objective being that the machine can hopefully carry on after (one) disk failure (including rebooting). I don't have any experience with software RAID. Can I do this during the normal CentOS

Anyone know of complete hardware solution based IDE Raid Controllers?
Years ago Accusys made an IDE raid controller that presented itself as one drive to the BIOS, making the unit completely OS agnostic. Anything like that out there, anymore? Cheers, Brett.

Re: Migrate Win2k3 to KVM
Hi, The error line is: *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF789AA94, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) Nothing more! centos 5.1 install , 3ware raid card...
Installing a new system using a 3ware card, raid 5 across 4 disks, partition, format went smothly and loaded the apps that I need, but for some reason it appears grub was not installed, or not completely. I am wanting to boot from the array, when installing grub on the loader it asks whether to install MBR on the first partition. Should I use the partition instead of the MBR? When I boot up in

Booting from ZIP 750 ...
Hi! Is anybody able to boot FreeBSD 5.x-STABLE from a ATAPI ZIP 750 .? I tried to, but it didn't work. I mounted the ZIP from a running 5.X-STABLE and made the normal release procedure (installworld / installkernel .). I also gave bootcfg a try. But nothing helped. Or is there no way of booting a FreeBSD 5.X-STABLE from ZIP? Yours Stefan

Problems with IDE RAID on specific motherboard
About 9 months ago, I made a policy decision to adopt RAID 1 on all systems I admin. (about 20 systems, all told) It's been a long, slow process. One of the systems is being upgraded from CentOS3 to CentOS4. It's been rock-solid stable for over a year. It's a "frankenserver" with parts from all over the place, maintained over years of active service. Currently,

ThinkStation with BIOS RAID and disk error messages in gparted
My ThinkStation runs CentOS 7 which I installed on a BIOS RAID 0 setup with two identical 256 Gb SSDs after removing Windows. It runs fine but I just discovered in gparted something that does not seem right: - Launching gparted it complains "invalid argument during seek for red on /dev/md126" and when I click on Ignore I get another error "The backup GPT table is corrupt, but the
