Btmp and Wmtp log rotate
IN the /var/log/ folder there are two files
WTMP and BTMP
BTMP is getting huge after a year, about 800MB, WTMP is getting close to
1MB.
In the /etc/logrotate.conf I see this
--------------------
# no packages own wtmp -- we'll rotate them here
/var/log/wtmp {
monthly
minsize 1M
create 0664 root utmp
rotate 1
}
-------------------
I can see where WTMP will probably rotate

How to rebuild logrotate.status
I have a problem in that at first all my log files were dated 12-31-1969

"/var/named/data/named.run" 1969-12-31-20:26:1

Estimating parameters for a bimodal distribution
For several years, I have been using Splus to analyze an ongoing series of
datasets that have a bimodal distribution. I have used the following
functions, in particular the ms() function, to estimate the parameters: two
means, two standard deviations, and one proportion. Here is the code I've
been using in S:
btmp.bi <- function(vec, p, m1, m2, sd1, sd2)

regenerating /var/lib/logrotate.status
I had a system date problem when logrotate ran for the first time such
that /var/lib/logrotate.status has:

"/var/log/wtmp" 1970-1-1-0:0:0

CentOS 6: Logrotate / selinux problem
Ever since a recent power failure I have been getting a Logrotate error. My
machine is on a UPS -- it shutdown cleanly, but I suspect that its BIOS/RTC
battery is dead, since the machine came up thinking it was 1982 :-(. I reset
the clock and everything is fine, *except* I had to delete Logrotate's state
files (which had bad dates). But now Logrotate is raising the error:

another odd centos 4 issue
while in firefox if i use arrow keys in text fields, it acts very oddly.
starting at the beginning of the line it works fine for a few characters
and then jumps to the end of the line. backarrow jumps backwards from the
end of line to within a few chars of the beginning.
anyone else seeing this?

40 second delay on automounts with 2.6.18-53.1.21.el5 kernel
after this latest centos 5 kernel update, i am seeing 40 second delays on
automount points. nothing in the rpm changelog looks obviously related to
autofs and the autofs module seems to be the same as the previous kernel.
i'm starting to do some strace'ing and other debugging, but nothing has
jumped out at me yet. i'm hoping someone else has seen it so i know i'm
not alone

/var/log/btmp logging ?
Hi,
Openssh doesn't log failed logins to /var/log/btmp like login does
(if btmp exists). This is on RH6.2.
Is there a specific reason for not logging to btmp ?
I think that logging to btmp would be a 'good thing'(tm). What about
other unices ? Do they have /var/log/btmp or something similar (AIX has
something like that and I think openssh already logs the failed attempts).
AFAIK

CentOS 5.4 logrotate and syslog
Anyone having problems with logrotate and CentOS 5.4?
Although I have /etc/logrotate.d/mail (contents below) to rotate my maillog
file, it fails to do it automatically:
/var/log/maillog {
compress
dateext
maxage 365
rotate 60
size=+1024k
missingok
postrotate
/etc/init.d/MailScanner restart
endscript

rsyslog / rotation, best practices
centos6
in regards to /etc/logrotate.d/syslog the file is in charge of processing
/var/log/cron
/var/log/maillog
/var/log/messages
/var/log/secure
/var/log/spooler
If I wanted to make a specific setting just for maillog (since that file
gets huge really quick) would I add
1- a new file /etc/logrotate.d/maillog with the parameters just like
the other files
2- add parameters in the file it is

SV: Manage 'full' log file
Thanks for the quick response!
I read about logrotate at voip-info.org but I didn't quite understand it. I'm no asterisk/linux expert unfortunately.
First of all. What exactly does happen when I run:
/usr/sbin/asterisk -rx 'logger rotate'
Does it clear the file and create a new one? Can I run this manually without any interruption in the system?
And what does the script do? I

Log rotation issue
Hi,
We recently migrated the samba-ad-dc from 4.6.5 to 4.7.1. Over a period
of last 15 days or so we have been observing that although the samba log
rotates, upon rotation, samba will start writing the logs to both the
main log file and the <main log>.old file simultaneously. While, the
main log file rotates properly, instead of deleting old file and create
a new one on rotation, samba
