Cron marks mailto value as UNSAFE
CentOS-6.2 We moved a cron job from a CentOS-5.7 host to a CentOS-6.2 host. The MAILTO variable is set to support at harte-lyne.ca in both instances. On the CentOS-6 host instead of receiving the mail with the output we see this in /var/log/cron instead: Mar 12 14:49:01 inet09 CROND[6639]: (cron theheart) UNSAFE (support at harte-lyne.ca ) The CentOS-5 host uses Sendmail as the MTA, the

use of MAILTO variable in crontab
I want to do something like this: 30 2 * * * MAILTO=testaddr at harte-lyne.ca; echo "this should be mailed" I have searched extensively and from what I have read I believe that this should work. But evidently I misapprehend how cron and MAILTO is supposed to work as my example does not cause any mail to be sent as far as I can determine from maillog. How does one specify unique

Need some help with logwatch.
I am trying to get a logwatch summary emailed to a central address from a cron job. The tasd was copied verbatim from a system which does this already. Both are shown below. host1 crontab -l as root 45 7 * * * /usr/sbin/logwatch --service http --service imapd --service pop3 --service sshd --service vsftpd --service zz-disk_space --service zz-network --service zz-sys --mailto support at

Alias for sending email messages from root
I have run into what can only be described as a farce but one that is outside my control and which I need fixed. I am informed that my cell phone service provider, Bell Canada, will not allow any email messages from a user id 'root' to pass through their email to sms text gateway. Now, I send alerts out from cron and other system monitoring software and these all go out as root at

Two ftp clients? Why?
I had a problem wherein running a script with an embedded ftp call would work in the login shell during integration testing and then fail with an unrecognized option error in cron during acceptance testing. In solving this I discovered that RedHat, and therefore CentOS, ships with at least two ftp clients, /usr/bin/ftp ( which I thought I was using ) and /usr/kerberos/bin/ftp, which I actually

NTP and virtual guests
We encountered a problem with respect to KVM virtual host restore and NTP. Specifically, our VM test host was shutdown by an extended power outage and when power returned all of the restored guests were immediately shutdown by ntp because the time differential between the restored systems and that of the ntpd sync servers exceeded the panic threshold. This is not an acceptable situation so in the

Runaway rpm process?
CentOS-6.4_x86_64 I have a KVM virtual machine (several actually) which acts as a warm spare for another kvm instance running on a different physical host. Each hour it backs up the live system using rsync. This morning I discovered that the backup instance was running at 99% utilisation and that the process consuming the entire virtual cpu was this: sh -c rpm -q -a --queryformat

Should AR set default values obtained from the schema?
First, if my understanding of what is happening is in error then please forgive me. I am given to understand that when a new AR model object is initialized then AR obtains from the database, and I suppose caches for further use, those columns that have defaults assigned and the default value for each. Consequently, when the save method is called on said model instance then all of these columns

TLS, SRTP, Asterisk11 and Snom870s
CentOS-6.5 (FreePBX-2.6) Asterisk-11.14.2 (FreePBX) snom870-SIP 8.7.3.25.5 I am having a very difficult time attempting to get TLS and SRTP working with Asterisk and anything else. At the moment I am trying to get TLS functioning with our Snom870 desk-sets. And I am not having much luck. Problem with SSHD update.
This morning I applied the 13 or so new updates to my servers. On one of them the ssh service and clients stopped working immediately after the update. I restarted the server in anticipation that there might be some instability introduced by updating on a system with active ssh connections. However, this has not cleared the problem. The packages in question are: openssh.i386

Strange alterations to vim and related packages on KVM host
OS CentOS-6.2 with updates to present. I use git on this host to manage configuration changes and to monitor package alterations. This is not meant to be a security check. It is simply a way for me to easily recover from fumble fingered configuration changes. Yesterday git status reported that the following files had changed since the previous commit: # modified: ../usr/bin/gdb #

Shutdown KVM guest not working
I am in the middle of a rather confusing situation. At the moment I am unable to shutdown a KVM guest machine. Nor am I presently able to open a virt-manager session on the host. I am not exactly sure what has happened but the problem with the vm guest is that issuing a "virsh shutdown 1" from the root console has no effect. # virsh list Id Name State
