Power consumption monitoring
Hi,
I have quite a few low-end development/test servers running
continuously and I would like to better manage their power
consumption.
I have found interesting information on how to perform CPU scaling
(e.g. [1] or [2]).
But I cannot find if there is a way to (software) monitor power
consumption on CentOS (or other such data like CPU temperature, fan
speed etc.).
What I read so far is that

rsyslog as default syslog daemon?
Hi all!
Is anybody here using rsyslog? I am looking for the right solution how
to use rsyslog in CentOS 5 as the default logging daemon. We use it
because of filtering using regular expressions.
I switched from sysklogd to rsyslog simply using
chkconfig --del syslog
chkconfig --add rsyslog
chkconfig rsyslog on
service syslog stop
service rsyslog start
but this seems not to be

CPU Usage when idle
Hello guys,
Did anyone noticed how green CentOS 6 is compared to the previous
release? I've been running a couple of "CentOS 6" VMs (on our vSphere
environment) for the last couple of weeks and noticed a BIG difference
when it comes to CPU usage when the VM is completely idle. I would
like to share what I've seen in our environment:

CentOS 6 : Tip for significantly increasing battery life / reducing power consumption (Thinkpad X220 Tablet)
Hello,
I was not happy with the power consumption of CentOS 6 x86_64 on a new
Lenovo Thinkpad x220 Tablet and I worked on reducing it. I just wanted
to share with the list one of the changes which gave me the most
significant improvement.
As per http://www.williambrownstreet.net/blog/?p=387, add the
following kernel arguments to the GRUB boot configuration:

So Lekensteyn asked me to run a few commands to also shut off the bus the GPU

Gnome Desktop Screensaver Security Lock Override?
We deployed our first CentOS-4 based workstation this past spring to see
if we can conveniently replace all, or at least most, of our MS-Win based
user systems with Linux boxes instead. Generally this trial unit has
proved a success but there is one lingering problem that I cannot seem to
find a straight-forward answer to: Is there an administrator override to a
user's password protected

Checkinstall and R-2.14.0
Dear all,
I try to install the latest R version using checkinstall (v. 1.6.2) on
Ubuntu 11.10. After solving all the dependencies (installed using
apt-get build-dep r-base) checkinstall fails to build and install R
package with the following error (the same commands build and install
R-2.13.2 on the same machine without any problem):

openssh-agent polling
This may be a stupid question - but why does ssh-agent fork off a
child and then exec the subcommand in the *parent* process? It forces
the agent in the child process to poll the parent, so it can exit when
the parent finishes. If the agent was the parent process, it could
use wait() instead. I'm sure there's some reason.
It'd be nice to take ssh-agent off the list of polling

NFS Hanging Under Heavy Load
Hello all,
I'm currently experiencing an issue with an NFS server I've built (a Dell
R710 with a Dell PERC H800/LSI 2108 and four external disk trays). It's a
backup target for Solaris 10, CentOS 5.5 and CentOS 6.2 servers that mount
it's data volume via NFS. It has two 10gig NICs set up in a layer2+3 bond
for one network, and two more 10gig NICs set up in the same way in another

samba_kcc RODC failes with NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Hello list,
I try to fix my issue and found some more debug information:
1) I see error in this situation:
Default-First-Site-Name:
- TEST-DC (RWDC)
Testsite2:
- empty
Testsite:
- BUILDHOST (RODC)
If I move TEST-DC to Testsite2, it fix the error, maybe because of 2).
2) python/samba/kcc/__init__.py:create_connections function try always to connect to Default-First-Site-Name, although

Help needed with NFS issue
I have four NFS servers running on Dell hardware (PE2900) under CentOS
5.7, x86_64. The number of NFS clients is about 170.
A few days ago, one of the four, with no apparent changes, stopped
responding to NFS requests for two minutes every half an hour (approx).
Let's call this "the hang". It has been doing this for four days now.
There are no log messages of any kind pertaining

samba_kcc RODC failes with NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Hello Rowland,
of course it will be started by samba, I saw this output if I run "samba -i".
But I can trigger this output also by starting samba_kcc manually.

possible memory leak in ldb module while dbcheck on RODC
Hai Andrej,
Oeps, Sorry, my mistake 4.6.x needs at least 1.1.29.
But you can upgrade to 4.6.x ;-)
Check again and if that problem then still exists,
then i think you can better ask this one in the samba-technical list.
Or if Rowland knows something more about this.
One tip, wait untill tomorrow or the weekend, there wil be a new release due to the regression bug.

I cannot run complete domain join without this option, because of my hardware limitations. The join ends with " Committing SAM database" and python exception, because no more memory is available.
if I run ldbsearch with --extended-dn I got this error message:

If I need to rerun samba-tool, can user login with his old password till its expire? (I suppose yes?)
Thank you.

too many wakeups/sec?
Hi,
I would have filed this as a bug but bugs.xiph.org doesn't seem to work
(despite quite enthusiastically claiming to :)). So here goes:
I'm seeing quite a few wakeups/sec in icecast2 2.3.2 on Debian Testing.
In fact, whether icecast is doing anything or not, powertop reports 44.3
wakeups per second. This is pretty big number, on my laptop it means
icecast alone is responsible for

Tinc power consuption
hello tincers,
when I on battery on my notebook, running powertop, I get
nic:<tinc-net-name> as the most power consuption resource in my notebook
just after the screen.
This happens no matter if I have traffic or not.
I am not really sure that if this is really a tinc fault or a tap/tun
implementation that never sleeps.
any advice?

skip chunk if "DRS linked attribute for GUID - DN not found"
Hello everyone,
i try to use Samba RODC(4.6.5) with W2K8R2. Windows AD has around 35000 objects. My Samba machine is small one (ARM 32bit CPU) with only 2GB physical memory, so i can’t join to the domain because of expensive memory usage.
To solve this Problem, i decide to replicate only critical objects and then let samba_kcc to get other objects.

a question regarding s-plus libraries and R
Hi!
I am a relatively new user of R and I use it to prepare my dissertation. I
have come to some very usefull and specific libraries written for S-PLUS 4
and would like to use them in R. Is that possible? I just found out that one
of these libraries has already been transfered to R, while 3 others have
not. For the matter of beeing more exact I''m interested in the dealing with
