Puppet logging
Hello all, I am trying to write a script that will check logs for puppet errors to use in a nagios check. I am checking /var/log/messages (RHEL6) but when puppet runs on its 30 minute interval, nothing gets written to messages. I have also looked at /var/log/puppet/puppet.log but that does not seem to be consistent either: [root@gm10v nagios]# tail /var/log/puppet/puppet.log Wed May 02 14:27:47

Puppet not pushing file
I have set up puppet on Ubuntu/Debian servers with no problem. I am trying to get puppet working in a RHEL environment. I have the client installed and the certificate is signed so I know the two are talking but for some reason I can not get puppet to push the file on to the client. What am I missing? Advise on recovering 2TB RAID1
Hi all, I have one drive fails on a software 2TB RAID1. I have removed the failed partition from mdraid and now ready to replace the failed drive. I want to ask for opinion if there is better way to do that other than: 1. Put the new HDD. 2. Use parted to recreate the same partition scheme. 3. Use mdadm to rebuild the RAID. Especially #2 is rather tricky. I have to create an exact partition

CentOS 6: hostname and timezone
Hello, I've purchased a new dedicated CentOS 6.0 / 64 bit server and have 2 minor problems please: 1) The "hostname" is reported as CentOS-60-64-minimal at CLI - eventhough I've edited /etc/hosts and changed the 2nd line: 127.0.0.1 localhost 176.9.123.123 preferans 2) Why is /etc/localtime a regular file? Should I maybe rm /etc/localtime ln -s

Software RAID1 Failure Help
I am running software RAID1 on a somewhat critical server. Today I noticed one drive is giving errors. Good thing I had RAID. I planned on upgrading this server in next month or so. Just wandering if there was an easy way to fix this to avoid rushing the upgrade? Having a single drive is slowing down reads as well, I think. Thanks. SSH keys question
All, I have 3 servers. All 3 are CentOS 5.5. All 3 have identical /etc/ssh/sshd_config files. I used ssh-keygen (with no arguments) to generate keys with no password. I then added all 3 id_rsa.pub keys to the authorized_keys file. With this set up, I should be able to ssh between all 3 boxes without needing a password. The problem is that one of the servers keeps asking for a password even with

OpenOffice or LibreOffice?
Given that the Document Foundation has now split away from Oracle to continue the development of an independent office suite, do we have any idea which was CentOS and Red Hat are planning to go in this area - OpenOffice or LibreOffice? I know that LibreOffice is not production ready yet - they only have their first beta available, but it's just a matter of (likely a short) time before the

Mirroring Hard Drive
I have a 500GB Sata drive about 15% used I would like to make an exact copy of too another Sata 500GB drive as a spare. That way if something happens to the one in service I can plug in the spare quickly and restore one of the weekly backups without reinstalling the entire OS and all the little tweaks of setup on this mail/web server. How do I do this? That is make an exact bootable copy of a

Change location of puppet config files
Hi everyone; I am trying to change the location of where the ssl cert files are stored. I have changed this in the puppet.conf file but, when I start the puppetmaster, the only certs being created are still in /etc/ puppet. Can someone tell me what I am missing here? EXT3 fs error on RAID1 device
Hi all. I have a Dell SC440 running Centos 4.4. It has two 500GB disks in a RAID1 array using linux software raid (md1 is / and md0 is /boot). Recently the root file system was remounted read-only for some reason. The logs don't show anything unusual, presumably the file system was read-only before anythng was logged. Running dmesg showed this error repeated many times: EXT3-fs error (device

Switching To Raid1
I have this ASUS M2NBP-VM motherboard http://tinyurl.com/3xby3h running CentOS 4.4 as a web/email server. It has a 500Gb SATA2 drive with about 32Gb in use. The motherboard supports hardware raid. Is there a way to switch to RAID1 without reinstalling or loosing any data? Also, if I am running raid how do I know if there is a failure on one of the drives anyway? Is hardware RAID1 a good idea?

converting system to raid1
Hello, I've got a single-drive CentOS5 system with two partitions on it, a 101 mb boot, and the rest of the disk as an lvm volume, two partitions in it, / and swap. I've got another disk, same size, and i'd like to add it in as a primary slave drive and convert this system to raid1 for redundancy. I do not want to reinstall this box, which is what the docs i've read say

Building a NFS server with a mix of HDD and SSD (for caching)
Hi list, I'm building a NFS server on top of CentOS 8. It has 8 x 8 TB HDDs and 2 x 500GB SSDs. The spinning drives are in a RAID-6 array. They are 4K sector size. The SSDs are in RAID-1 array and with a 512bytes sector size. I want to use the SSDs as a cache using dm-cache. So here what I've done so far: /dev/sdb ==> SSD raid1 array /dev/sdd ==> spinning raid6 array I've

Convert Filesystem to Ext4
On a running 64 bit CentOS 5.6 box is it possible to convert from Ext3 to Ext4 to improve performance? Right now I can deal with a few hours of downtime on it. This is an email server with lots of I/O due to seek time. Software RAID1 as well. Will Ext4 offer much of an improvement?

Upgrading drives in raid 1
I think I have solved my issue and would like some input from anyone who has done this for pitfalls, errors, or if I am just wrong. Centos 5.x, software raid, 250gb drives. 2 drives in mirror, one spare. All same size. 2 devices in the mirror, one boot (about 100MB), one that fills the rest of disk and contains LVM partitions. I was thinking of taking out the spare and adding a 500gb drive. I
