External HD on CentOS 5.5
I'm looking into backing up my CentOS 5.5 system using an external USB
2.0 hard drive. Anyone with experience with Toshiba Canvio USB 750 GB
unit? I'm backing up to DVDs now and would like to streamline the process.
Any advice is welcome with thanks.

DVD Shrink - no DVD devices found
I am new to Wine and really struggling. I'm trying to get DVD Shrink and DVD
Decrypter running on my Kubuntu 5.04. My system is current. I have a 2.8Mhz
machine with 1Gb memory and lots of space on my 160Gb hard drive. I have a
Plextor DVD+-RW and an HP CD-RW. They are /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd respectively.
Here is my /fstab file:

HAL Daemon failure on boot up
I've been having a problem for a while: when booting, haldaemon will
fail, leaving me without CD/DVD and floppy drives available.
Has anyone else had this kind of problem? If so, can anyone suggest a
solution?
Thanks for listening,

Command ls blocked on usbdrive
Hi.
In the /etc/fstab I have the next line for an usbdrive (IOMEGA USB 2.0 80
Gb):
/dev/sda1 /media/IOMEGA_HDD vfat
pamconsole,exec,noauto,managed 0 0
I mounted the usbdrive with mount /media/IOMEGA_HDD. If I executed an ls
command for one of the directories on the usbdrive (ls /media/IOMEGA_HDD)
there is not problem but if I executed an ls of the usbdrive ls -lha

T1/E1 Cards
This is probably a really bad question to ask but here goes. Does
asterisk work with any of the T1/E1 cards from SBE? I'm sure SBE is
a competitor to Digium, but I have access to SBE cards and the linux
driver. Just curious more than anything. Thanks.

With all of this hokey-pokey surrounding licensing and mac addresses, I wonder if this outfit is actually still in compliance with the terms of their license for this software, whatever it may be?
If the software licensed to run only on Machine X and Machine X has now been junked and replace by Machine Y, then isn't the

Noob help with IAX
Ok so I've just built and installed a CVS (HEAD) version of asterisk
on RHFC2 running a 2.6.13.3 kernel.org kernel. I installed the samples
via "make samples". Everything seems to work except one thing. I'm
trying to do the connect to the Digium IAX demo server portion of the

External USB Drive partitioning and formatting
Hi,
I just bought a Seagate 1TB USB drive thinking that I could create a
few partitions in it, format in ext3 fs, then configure bacula to
setup a backup server in my CentOS box and backup my windows and mac
clients.
I have plugged the drive and mounted in /mnt/usbdrive and is seen as
/dev/sdb1 by the OS. The output of df command is:
[root at Production ~]# df

Can't start X with latest CentOS 50. kernel
Nvidia driver for 6200 LE video card.
No problems with CentOS 4.5. When installed (not upgraded) 5.0 X would
not start. X works fine with 2.6.18-8.1.3.el5 but only with xorg.conf
as written for 4.5
Haven't seen traffic regarding this problem. Has anyone else seen this?
Thanks,

Strange browser displays with 5.x on Dell GX-260
I had been running CentOS 4.x for quite some time with no problems.
Apparently I stubbed my toe when installing CentOS 5 final.
Symptoms: various web sites are not properly displayed in Firefox 3.0.1
(or predecessors). In particular, cnn.com and any calls to Google
display with a screen full of ascii characters rather than images. When
I look at "page info" within Firefox, it

Lost icons and background on 5.2 desktop
Somehow I did something that caused my gnome desktop to evaporate. The
only thing that hasn't vanished is the task bar I have set up at the
bottom of the screen.
Which configuration files/directory may have become corrupt or gone?
Any help would be appreciated.
TIA,

Problem burning DVD+RW discs
Good Day--
I've been backing up my essential stuff to DVD+R discs for quite a while
with no trouble at all.
Last week I tried backing up to a DVD+RW with no trouble at all.
This week, when trying to re-write my weekly backup, CD/DVD Creator told
me it could not write to the disc because it was read-only. Is there a
bug in CD/DVD Creator or am I doing something incorrectly. Obviously,

journal aborting and remounting /boot as ro
Hi,
Apologies in advance for any breaches of netiquette, I couldn't find any guidelines
about submission to this forum but I'd be grateful for your help on something.
My /boot filesystem is being remounted shortly after start-up as read-only.
I get the following messages...

'credentials' file doesn't work - also observed by others
Background: Linux, Debian (Sarge). I want to auto-mount an smbfs at
boot. smbmount version is 3.0.7-Debian.
With the following in my fstab, I can do the mount as root, but have to
provide a password (hence either I can't boot unattended, or can't mount
it during boot):
//<server>/<share> /mnt/point smbfs

how do I stop automount of Hitichi Lifestudio USB drive
Most of the time, if I plug a USB drive into my computer,
gnome/centos/whatever will ask me what I want to do with it.
With a Hitachi Lifestudio, all the partitions mount without asking me.
How do I stop that behavior?
My suspicion is that the same kind of
mechanism is what makes candy drops work.
So far as I know, my backup drive is not candy,
but I would still like to be able to control my
