Interpreting logwatch
Every few days I see in the logwatch on my Centos-5.5 web-server
what seems like a rather feeble break-in attempt.
Eg today I see

logwatch/shorewall warnings
I'm running a little web-server under CentOS-5.4 ,
with shorewall as firewall.
I used to get messages about attempted intrusions,
with the IP addresses of those attempting to connect.
This stopped some time ago,
and my logwatch reports now are very bare.
I don't recall changing the settings of logwatch or shorewall.
Has there been some default change?
I should say that I'm not sure

Problem with spamassassin under CentOS-5.7
I'm getting the following warning in my logwatch,
or if I restart the spamassassin service.
I've tried yum-reinstalling the packages involved
but that didn't help.

Dovecot attack
It seems there was some kind of attack against dovecot on my server
(CentOS-5.5) with a hundred or so logwatch entries like:

**Unmatched Entries**
dovecot-auth: pam_succeed_if(dovecot:auth):
error retrieving information about user admin

Fail2ban problem
If there is a serious power failure, eg during an electric storm,
and the internet goes down
then my CentOS-6.2 server seems to take an inordinate time, maybe forever,
to get past fail2ban.
It is as though there is an extremely long - maybe an hour - timeout
if fail2ban cannot connect to the internet.
(I usually stop the machine with the power-button,
re-boot into a different OS (Fedora) and

logwatch named logs
ever since implementing the no-recursion-on-outside queries fix on one
of my name servers, my logwatch emails have been 10-20MB/day, filled
with crud like...

spamassassin with postfix/dovecot
I'm trying to install spamassassin on a postfix/dovecot server,
running CentOS-6.4, following the instructions at
<http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd>.
I think I have taken all the steps indicated,
and the configuration seems to pass the tests suggested,
although the response is much more sparse than that described:

fail2ban problem on shutdown
Another post on fail2ban reminded me of a problem I had
in Italy, when the ADSL connection kept dropping,
and only came back on re-booting.
(I solved the problem in the end by getting a Billion modem/router
in place of the no-name one supplied by Telecom Italia.)
It seems that if there was no internet connection,
fail2ban hung for an inordinate length of time,
possibly for ever, when shutting

fail2ban won't die
If I lose my broadband connection here (Italy),
and try to re-boot the computer (CentOS-6.2),
the shutdown hangs at fail2ban.
Normally there is no problem re-booting;
it only happens if the network has gone down.
It may just be an extraordinarily long timeout.
Has anyone experienced this?
And is there anything one can do about it?

semi OT: logwatch results
Semi Off Topic
My searching hasn't found what I consider superior info, and we are
wondering from others experience on this list...
In the logwatch results we all see the info below on almost a daily basis
I have taken the liberty of combining logwatch results from centos 4 and 5
machines for extra info and future searchability

Strangely slow disk
I have a 1.5TB Western Digital hard disk (WD15EADS-00R6B0)
on my CentOS-5.7 server, which has become incredibly slow
for some operations, eg rsync, BackupPC archive, e2fsck,
although it seems to work fine for ordinary file operations,
and "smartctl -a /dev/sdb" does not report any errors.
For example, running "e2fsck -p /dev/sdb5" on a 250GB partition
on this disk took over 24

It comes with the libnice package in Fedora-11.

NM on a server?
Is there any point in running NetworkManager on a server?
The IP addresses of the two server NICS are fixed
(192.168.1.2 and 192.168.2.2 .)
I'm not clear if it is necessary in some way
to run NM on a CentOS system?

CentOS-6 by PXEboot?
Has anyone succeeded in installing CentOS-6.0 by PXEboot.
If so, would you say how you did it, please.
I tried (on an HP MicroServer),
but gave up in the end and used a USB stick installation instead.
But I'd be very interested to know how to do it, for the future.
Unfortunately I didn't keep a proper note of my PXEboot attempt,
but IIRC the problem was that install.img was not found,

My new server
I bought a very cheap server yesterday -
an HP ProLiant micro server for 160 euro
(280 euro with 120 cashback, for some reason).
But I was surprised when I opened the box
to find it didn't come with keyboard or mouse,
and doesn't have the old keyboard/mouse sockets,
but requires USB versions.
Is that the norm nowadays?
Is it possible to convert the old keyboard/mouse plugs?
Also there is

Samba/BackupPC under CentOS-5.3
I'm almost completely ignorant about samba on Windows machines,
In particular I know nothing about Windows permissions,
if that is relevant here.
I am running BackupPC on a CentOS-5.3 machine.
It works perfectly for backing up Linux folders,
but I have great difficulty extending it to Windows clients.
To be precise, I have a share called "EA Games D"
on a machine running Windows XP

Dovecot GUI
Is there a web-interface to dovecot under CentOS-6?
I want to create a top-level folder
(ie at the same level as Inbox)
but this doesn't seem to be possible
from KMail running on a remote Fedora-6 laptop.
I was browsing through the dovecot wiki,
and I saw some pictures which seemed to be from a dovecot GUI,
but I could not find the name of this program.
Alternatively, can I simply create

postfix + amavisd-new
I've been following the instrunctions in
<http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd>
for installing Amavisd, Clamav and SpamAssassin
on top of postfix/dovecot .
Dovecot is working fine,
but I want to deal with spam email.
(I am using sendmail/dovecot with procmail and spamassassin
on another server, but decided to go over to postfix
on this server when I saw it is now the CentOS default.)
