OT: anything in CentOS 5.2 that uses opendns.com when browsing web?
I believe this is completely OT, but I want to be positive. I have a fully
up to date CentOS 5.2 box. During the past week, when surfing with Firefox
(and today, while testing with Konqueror), frequently, especially when DNS
is slow, I am seeing references to opendns.com At times, I end up on
opendns.com web pages, instead of at the web site I'm trying to get to. My

CentOS or other Linux Internet Router/Gateway
Hi Everyone,
I've got kids who are growing older and I want to build a Linux box to
filter Internet access. I've got six computers on the Internet, plus
the laptops -- most run Windows. I'm not sure if it's called a router
or gateway or...? I don't mind doing the leg work, I just don't know
where to start. I'm pretty sure I'm *not* looking for a web server

OT: Firefox SSL error on Linux, Firefox OK on Windows - same web site
Using CentOS 5.3 (32 bit) on my Desktop with Mozilla Firefox 3.0.12.
With one web site (LinkShare) I am getting an SSL error, after
clicking to get a more advanced report I do not get that error, using
Mozilla Firefox 3.0.13 on M$ Windows and I get the report OK on
Windows. It appears, when using Firefox on Linux, that it is not
ending up on the LinkShare web site and Firefox is giving me the

A bit more on the Firefox 3.5.issue
I set up a CentOS desktop computer for my brother and his kids. When
Firefox 3.5 came out he decided to download and install it like he
would Windows (he doesn't yet understand the repository system). He's
been telling me that it works fine, even though I was skeptical due to
my experience with Firefox 3.5 on CentOS 5.3. Then today, he says,
"Oh, by the way, the CentOS computer has

DNS update system-config-network GUI
Box is fully updated CentOS 5.5 (32 bit). DHCP is from the ADSL modem
192.168.1.1. After I update the DNS settings and restart the network,
the DNS changes do not hold. I have tried using this GUI, as a regular
user, after giving the root password, and, also, logged in as the root
user.
When I begin, the Primary DNS is shown as 192.168.1.1 the IP of the
ADSL modem. I move that IP to the Tertiary

Flash Drive problem?
I've been having an odd problem lately. When I drag files from the
computer to a flash drive, they appear to copy, but when I try to use
the files I find that only the name was copied (file size of 0). When
I copy the same files to the same flash drive, from the terminal,
everything seems to work.
Has anyone else experienced a problem like this? It's starting to get
a little frustrating.

A couple questions about Wine
VirtualBox works great but, since I only really use one Windows
program (an older, specialized word processor called Movie Magic
Screenwriter), I'm thinking of using Wine to run it in CentOS and
getting rid of the Windows virtual machine. But a couple questions:
1) If I run Wine, do I introduce security or performance issues?
2) Is there any difference between Michael Harris' Wine

Hi,
I'm trying to run Celtx (a screenplay formatter) in CentOS 5.3 from

When should LVM be used?
In my old computer I have a much bigger hard drive then in this one --
and I plan to hand that old computer down to one of my sons -- keeping
his current drive from an even older computer. Currently the hard
drive on my old computer has SuSE Linux, but that will go. I'll
rebuild CentOS 5.5 on it, but I want to leave some free space for
whatever comes up and also dual-boot Vector Linux. Which,

OT: free DNS service?
I have been using a free DNS service for the past seven (7) years.
This morning, at 4 A.M., , I changed the "A" record for one of my web
sites, to point to an IP address on a different server, so I could
test. After watching the TTL count down from 3600 to zero, with the
"dig" command, it then reset to 3600, but still resolved to the
original IP address. :-) I set the

Flash problems in newest upgrade?
Hi, I just upgraded to the newest kernel and Flash. Hulu now "grays
out" when I try to go to full screen. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the proprietary video drivers (no difference either way),
so I'm guessing it has something to do with either the new Flash or
the new kernel. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
Thanks for any pointers.

Failing to get pxechain.com working, SYSLINUX 3.86.
To start, I know I need to upgrade SYSLINUX, but since we are using the
CMenu's it's not that easy of an upgrade. I have been (slowly) working
on a new iPXE/pxelinux 4.04 install that I am migrating to.
However, I have an interesting problem. Using any of the examples I have
seen, I can not make pxechain.com work.

I have a location using a CentOS 5 server that's multihomed running Asterisk and iptables for internal web access.
Recently some sales people got busted surfing some explicit content so the owner wants something in there to block this.
I had heard of Dans Guardian and am reading about what's involved here but just wanted an opinion on what's the best solution for this. NTLM silent

Firefox 3.5 Issues
I downloaded Firefox 3.5 from the M. Harris site and, for the most
part, have had good luck with it. But I have also had hard crashes
that take down CentOS, not just Firefox.
It happened to me twice on eBay (on the same page) -- and now I can
replicate it as many times as I want by going to...

...and choosing one of the two newsletters, linked there.

I got a "Update Notification" at the bottom of my screen -- so I

sure why I got them.)
They are as follows:

Newby- New install forgot Login - pwd
Hi,
I have just spent a whole day installing Centos 5.3 on an old machine
and now as I take disc 4 out and reboot, I get the first black screen
with Login and Password.
I can remember being asked for one Login and pwd early in the install
but chose not to use one, then it asked what the box is going to be
called and I said Linux...
(I think).
How in earth can I get myself out of this??
