All, I have an old computer 64M 350Mhz pentium II. centos os 4.1 installs on it fine. however on boot it says low memory and it kills certain processes. httpd or sendmail. on booting 5.3 I see these two services hpiod and hpssd starting. I dont need them and tried to do "chkconfig hpiod off" and and hpiod is not found. How do you turn these services off? Jerry

Is there a command that will monitor a process for exiting (crash or normal exit) and then execute another command based on the said process no longer being active? Or is there a "wrapper" command that runs a process and when that process exists due to crashing or just exiting normally) that another process can be run. Thanks, Jerry

hi all I have something like 3000 log files in a directory (from data collection). At 4am in the morning cron runs a script of mine that essentiallly trims all files in that directory back to a certain size. Basically does a "tail -c XXXX filename > tmp_filename" I have noticed that only around the 4am-4:15 time frame when the trim is happening does my other process log connection

Is there a way to tell through /proc or something else which files a process has open and more importantly what position the read pointer is in for that open file? As an example if I am reading a file with a program I have no control over, and I kill that program, I need to know when in the data file that program was reading at that time. Is this information available and if so how to read it?

I installed C7 along with MATE desktop... My monitor is a 4K unit but when I goto the System -> preferences -> hardware -> Displays there is selection for the 4K display. It stops at 1920x1080. I was just wondering if there are special tricks people do that compile A LOT on centos? Do RAM disks help or something else I dont about that minimizes your compile time? I presently have and AMD x2 4800+ with 2GIG ram. Just curious if I can reduce any more time out of my compiles. Jerry

I am wanting to use the mkfs.hfsplus as mentioned here http://www.oli.id.au/createosxdmgdiskimagesinlinux but I dont have the command. yum provides "*/mkfs.hfsplus" returns no packages found. Where do I find this command? Thanks. Jerry
