Ignorant question on pam_shield
I've seen pam_shield recommended several times
for protecting against malicious login attempts;
but I'm not quite clear if this requires one
to be already running some pam-based software?
Also, I'm running shorewall,
and would prefer a shorewall based protection,
but the advice I read on googling for this
seemed excessively complicated.

localhost/PING is CRITICAL
Hi all,
I've recently switched to the latest rt kernel
available from http://people.centos.org/hughesjr/kernel-rt
And one of the two problems I'm having with this new kernel
is that the logs have been flooded with nagios alerts
which indicate high percentage (50-60) of packet loss
when pinging localhost. The problem shows up several hours
after the system reboot.
Any ideas on what might

Bricked my system
Updated to CentOS 7.4
No wifi. The wifi was using wl-something driver that had third party
firmware but it wasn't seen.
Attempted to get network with ethernet from the mobo to router but it
wouldn't come up.
So I rebuilt the wl-whatever kernel module and installed the updated
version built against the newer kernel.
Now when attempting to boot it gets stuck at "i8042 no

This is why you should have done as others had suggested. It automatically sets up grub with the new kernels.

disconnect after too many errors?
There are a couple of jerks that are tying to dictionary attack my
email server, and one of the vectors is pop3/imap logins. Something I
would like to do in dovecot, but can't seem to find, is the ability to
disconnect after a certain number of errors. The vast majority of my
users (i.e. me) don't hand-type POP3 or IMAP transactions, but when we
do, we know how to spell things

fstab problem after a failed drive
Everyone,
I installed a sata drive on a SuperMicro with SCSI drives. No problem
with the installation. Everything went as expected as the os recognized
the drive and assigned /dev/sdc to the new 300 gig Seagate drive. I had
planned to use this drive for backup tarballs.
The drive had been functional for about a week with no problems.
Apparently it went out today when I tried to reboot the

Sampling encoder timings between libtheora-1.0 & libtheora-1.1beta3
As requested by Ralph in my introduction e-mail to this list [1], I've
gone ahead and done some sample test timings for encoding between
libtheora-1.0 and libtheora-1.1beta3, as available from the Theora
website [2].
So far, I've tested with 4 different files that I generated with content
I already have. The files, in brief, are the following:

Any alternative to Single User Mode
I actually opened the Virtual Disk Image (.vdi) on http://www.vmxray.com/.
I could see that despite my disk being of 100GB only ~65GB was being shown.
All the stuff related ot the local user was not visible at all.
After I restarted my VM, the OS gets stuck here (
http://i.stack.imgur.com/KVYxV.png). Even after trying the single user
login it was stuck there. But the emergency mode worked alright.

miro from rpmforge appears to have dep solving issues
Hi folks,
Anyone know the whereabouts of libgtkembedmoz.so()(64bit) as it is
needed by miro-1.0-1.el5.rf.x86_64 (rpmforge)
I tried a whatprovides and have looked at epel as well as rpmforge - no
luck.
While I'm asking, I'm looking for an internet HD TV viewer - miro looked
interesting - any other products you know of?
TIA

Systemd and VirtualBox
The continuing challenges of getting a workable server continue.
The latest spins of VirtualBox seem to have solved the issues of DKMS
auto compiles of the driver being aborted. The yum updates work as
expected, provided one stops the running vms manually first.
However, trying to get systemd to start the vms is proving to be a PITA.
I have extensively googled and found that there are no

CentOS 3.9
Hi,
Red Hat started releasing security advisories and update packages that are
part of RHEL3 U9. Still, on RHN there are no RHEL3 U9 ISO images released
yet.
As usual, CentOS will make available CentOS 3.9 when it is deemed ready.
So there is no need to ask when it is going to be released :)
Kind regards,
