Radeon HD 4550 driver
Upgraded the kernel to the latest, then tried to rebuild the proprietary
Catalyst driver for a Radeon HD 4550 on a Dell Optiplex 980.
The install dies, with a c error. Anyone else out there succeed in
building one on the 2.6.18-194.17.1.el5-x86_64 kernel? I went to the ATI
website, and the "installation instructions" include that it needs a) 32
bit software (which? dunno) and b) a

Which effects are 3D and which are 2D?
AMD is dropping support for the R300-R500 cards in their official drivers:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd_r500_legacy&num=1
As the current open source drivers do not support 3D, I'd like to know
which Compiz effects use 3D and which use 2D. Thanks.

PXELINUX and PowerSave Mode ...
We have a lot of diskless Linux clients which are booting via PXELINUX
or ETHERBOOT. The problem is that they are on for 24 hours and APM
PowerSave mode works for ETHERBOOT only. But in the future we want to
use PXELINUX only, which seems to have no features for APM or ACPI
PowerSave included. Would it be possible to integrate such features in
PXELINUX or is there a way to boot a special image

need help using read.fortran
Hello kind and R-knowledgeable souls!
I am trying to use read.fortran to read in old datasets in 80-column-card format
with no separators between variables (just 80 columns of solid digits).
I comprehend the instructions for specifying the columns for each variable, but
I can't understand how to assign the variable names after reading the help pages
for read.fortran, read.fwf and

centos 7: trouble setting the ondemand governor
Hi,
The default "stop" action for the cpupower service seems to be to set
the ondemand governor, but this fails. I can reproduce the issue
directly by running cpupower:
$ sudo cpupower frequency-set -g ondemand
Setting cpu: 0
Error setting new values. Common errors:
- Do you have proper administration rights? (super-user?)
- Is the governor you requested available and modprobed?

power management / tuned following external power source
hi,
twice in the last week I've been caught out where the laptop was running
tuned with 'throughput-performance' profile on the work table, and I
walked away, carried on working - and had the battery run flat in just
over an hour.
Compare this with tuned running the 'powersave' profile - will usually
take the battery through to 3hrs+ - and if i just totally turn down the

CentOS7 KDE - post-boot splash screen
Hello List Members,
I decided to install C7 KDE on a workstation for a friend of mine. Works
great, but the post-boot KDE splash screen (light blue and has 3 or more up
^ arrows that move from the lower center upwards) is a bit of a frustration
for that person. I've determined that one can press the Escape key and move
from that bluish splash to the login screen. (And at one point rolling the

Disable Kernel Screen Blanker
Hey Y'all,
I'm trying to turn off the kernel screen blanker that shuts off the
video after about 10 minutes of inactivity at the keyboard. After
extensive googling I've found two ways to *NOT* do it.
In my home .xinitrc
setterm -blank 0 -powersave off -powerdown 0
xset s off
In /etc/rc.local
/usr/bin/setterm -powersave off -blank 0
I've tried both to no effect.
Of course

control for frame color in cloud()
I am trying to construct a cloud plot viewable in 3D with the classic 3D
glasses (one red lens, one bluish lens). I've figured out how to overlay
two printings of cloud() (from the lattice package) with appropriate colors,
however the box frame seems to only print in black. Is there any way to
control the color for the frame? How about the background color (gray)?

gradient generation
Dear R-help subscribers;
I have a question regarding making gradients in R. I've searched on the
web, but was only able to find functions that make a gradient between
color X and Y, which is not what I want.
I want to 'pick out' individual, smaller pieces of a gradient based on a
range of numbers. Say that I have a range of numbers, leading from 0 to
1. Then I want 0 to refer to

ext3 and powersave
Hi,
This is probably a silly question, but, does ext3 allow ide drives to go
int powersave mode? Thinking of upgrading my home linux router to ext3,
but I'm wondering if it'll keep my drives awake all the time. I have ext3
running on several servers at work, and some of my workstations too. I
can't tell for certain if the drives on my workstations go into powersave
now that i've

Intel i7-940, DX58S0 motherboard, Radeon X1950 Pro video card
This computer is my main desktop machine --- an Intel i7-940 CPU and DX58S0
motherboard with a Radeon X1950 Pro video card. It's currently running Fedora 11
and working just fine.
However, I have been slowly moving all of my "computer stuff" off of Fedora
and onto Centos, and this (and my Acer Aspire One laptop) are the only Fedora
installations that I now have left.
Does anyone
