Re: how to install BackupPC on CentOS 5.2 -- how do I use Test repository?
Ok, downloading the BackupPC RPM directly did not work to myriad
dependencies and sub-dependencies.
How do I add the Test repository to my yum config, please?

Installing yesterday's CentOS (or how to install the patch/package set from 3 weeks ago)
Hello,
Let's say your operating policy is "no patch updates without testing
first in the test environment". Let's say it takes you 3 weeks to
test. Over the course of the 3 weeks, the repo changes (new
packages added, old removed).
Is there a way to "freeze" a set of packages so that when I
run "yum update" on a Prod server it'll get the same package

KeepAlive/ClientAliveInterval not working? Idle timeout.
I have set /etc/ssh/sshd_config with:
KeepAlive yes
ClientAliveInterval 3
However, no KeepAlive type messages seem to be sent. I've verified this
by looking at the network lights, which don't flicker every 3 seconds.
I am attempting to keep interactive ssh sessions alive longer. If
don't type anything for about 2 minutes, the sessions close. If I run a

How to strip out the title bar from xterm windows on CentOS 5 GNOME?
Hi. Running CentOS 5 with the default GNOME desktop. Is it possible
to configure xterm windows not to have title bars to get the most out of
the available screenspace?
I've tried to look this up but mostly find reference how to change the
content of the title bar; I want to remove it completely.
Found a reference to Compiz but the version available through CentOS
seems old (0.0.13 compared

Friend's post in moderation queue for a week... why so long, please? And getting "permission denied" trying to mount an SMB share
Hi. A friend of mine (Jim Fancher) is having trouble with his Samba
install on CentOS Linux. I suggested he ask on the Samba users
mailing list. He joined the list and posted, and got an autoreply
saying his message is being held for moderation. That was a week ago
(Mon, Nov 22nd). Nothing since. I see other posts coming through
since then, so wondering why his message got delayed. It was

httpd stopped working under SELinux so I had to turn SELinux off. libxml2.so.2: failed to map segment from shared object: Permission denied
Hi.
CentOS 5.4 64-bit with SELinux, happily running for over a year, suddenly
httpd fails to start up, getting an error message like:
Starting httpd: Syntax error on line X of /etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf:
Cannot load /etc/httpd/modules/libphp5.so into server: libxml2.so.2:
failed to map segment from shared object: Permission denied
I turned off SELinux and was able to start httpd.

How to update CentOS 5.4 to 5.6?
Is there a way to update a CentOS 5.4 server to 5.6 (but not 5.7)?
"yum update" takes me all the way up to 5.7.

How much maximum memory will CentOS 5 support? I know it's not 16 GB!
How much maximum memory will CentOS 5 support, please?
The product info page at http://www.centos.org/product.html
says 16GB, but I am running 80 GB RAM right now and seeing
80 GB in top.
I see the same 16 GB limit on the RHEL page:
http://www.redhat.com/rhel/compare/#note_4
The server hardware is capable of 192 GB RAM and I want to
add memory, but want to be sure the OS will support it.

can't install mono-devel because mono-basic requires mono-core. But I have mono-core! What to do? I need gmcs.
Hi. I'm trying to install gmcs so that I can build gbrainy, a mental exerciser.
I am not sure what package provides, maybe mono-devel? however mono-devel
fails to install because, it says, mono-basic requires mono-core. I
have mono-core
installed. Why is this failing?

deadtime/keepalive not working as expected
My expectations are probably wrong, but I had to manually kill a process
to unlock a file when I think it should have killed itself.
I have deadtime set to 15 and keepalive at default (300). I opened a file on
my server in Excel, then shut down the machine. Hours later someone
tells me the file is locked.
Shouldn't keepalive have detected that the machine was off in 5 minutes?

Dovecot 2 and TCP-Keepalive
Hi!
I am about to migrate a perdition-based IMAP/POP3 proxy to Dovecot.
Unfortunately some users are behind a firewall/NAT setup which throws
away seemingly idle TCP connections sooner than the established default
of 24 hours (more likely after 30 minutes ...) resulting in all kinds of
weird client behavior.
And unfortunately? this firewall/NAT setup is outside of my control and
I have no means

keepalive parameter on 2.0.4b
The default for the keepalive param in 2.0.4b is 300 although the docs. suggest
that the default is 0. Does anyone know why the default changed?
I need to change the keepalive value to 0 as I have some users connecting via
isdn and this keepalive setting will initiate an undesired phone call.
I have 100+ users on the local LAN connecting to samba on HP-UX 11 and have not
experience any problems
