Using CentOS Live CD to recover trashed RHEL system
Hi,
There's a RHEL5 system somewhere across the internet with a trashed root
file system. I have VPN access to the subnet where it lives. But the
system is not talking to the network.
The current plan is having an onsite person boot from a CentOS Live CD, copy
a small script to configure networking, set a password for the centos user,
start sshd, and tweak the default firewall to allow

sata AHCI controllers (real and virtual)
I saw something somewhere about AHCI support requiring kernel 2.6.19 or later.
But the current CentOS/RHEL stable kernels are 2.6.18
I'm trying to run CentOS/RHEL in a VirtualBox vm, which by default creates sata
virtual disks with an AHCI virtual controller.
These virtual machines are quite unstable, and I'm wondering if the AHCI virtual
controller is the problem.
I do have a real

GDM could not write to you authorization file ... Please contact your system adminstrator
I am the system administrator.
I have a system that was built with a default install which resulted
in everything in a single file system except for /boot
wrote some scripts to split out: /home, /usr, /var, /opt, and /tmp to
separate file systems/logical volumes it looks like it ought to work,
There's plenty of space in all the filesystems and I can log via ssh
and have write access in my

vgrename, lvrename
Hi,
I want to rename some volume groups and logical volumes.
I was not surprised when it would not let me rename active volumes.
So I booted up the system using the CentOS 5.5 LiveCD,
but the LiveCD makes the logical volumes browsable using Nautilus,
so they are still active and I can't rename them.
Tried:
/usr/sbin/lvchange -a n VolGroup00/LogVol00
but it still says:

LDAP and Linux compatibility
Please excuse a wee bit of cross posting here. It seems that the
questions list may not be the appropriate place for this as I've found
a number of unanswered posts involving this topic.
My FreeBSD workstations are setup with pam_ldap to a centralized
openldap server for authentication. This works perfectly for native
FreeBSD applications. What I'm running into an issue with are Linux

any recent experience combining GlusterFS w/ Xen?
Hi Folks,
Anybody have any recent experience building a small cluster that
combines GlusterFS and Xen (with bonus points for a Debian environment)?
We''re getting ready to shift from a 2-node Xen/Pacemaker/DRBD
environment to a 4-node environment - and I''d really like to be able to
create/migrate/failover/delete VMs transparently across all 4 nodes.
Seems like Gluster might

interesting installation problem - interaction between drbd and xen
Hi,
I''ve been building up a new HA system, running Xen on DRBD devices.
Configuration this applies to:
Debian Lenny
xen-linux-system-2.6.26-2-xen-686 package
|**|drbd8-modules-2.6.26-2-686
drbd8-modules-2.6.26-2-xen-686
As I''ve been building the system, I ran into an interesting problem,
with two symptoms:
1. running VMs would come back up after a reboot, but would hang on

Kerberos to file server
Howdy,
I may be approaching this problem entirely wrong, or not. Was hoping for a
little guidance one way or the other.
I've got this AS/400 with gobs of unused file storage on it that I want to
share across as a file server to a FreeBSD box. The AS/400 side of things
supports NFS and kinda pretends to be a Unix like machine in this role.
Users will be booting from diskless clients

any opinions on debian vs. opensuse for Xen?
Hi Folks,
I''ve been getting just a little fed up with the state of Xen on Debian
Lenny - there are a couple of known bugs that lead to periodic kernel
panics - but fixes haven''t made it into the Lenny distribution. I''m
sort of waiting to see how things shake out with Debian Squeeze, when it
becomes stable, but...
I''ve been noticing that Suse (both the

Mail Server in the DMZ question
Been trying to puzzle through a firewall layout here involving E-Mail. Would
have thought this was a more common kind of scenario, but I haven't been able
to Google me up an answer to this one.
At present I have an SMTP server (Postfix) in my DMZ that is simply re-routing
mail into my secure network. This is a less than optimal setup simply due to
having to allow traffic from the DMZ

how well will this work
Hi Folks,
I find myself trying to expand a 2-node high-availability cluster from
to a 4-node cluster. I'm running Xen virtualization, and currently
using DRBD to mirror data, and pacemaker to failover cleanly.
The thing is, I'm trying to add 2 nodes to the cluster, and DRBD doesn't
scale. Also, as a function of rackspace limits, and the hardware at
hand, I can't separate

On Hold music
This may sound kind of crazy and I maybe missing something. But are you
placing the call on hold so you can hear the hold music. This may not
be the case but you may have to place the call on hold to here the
music.
Also you mentioned sound, you do not need a sound card in the asterisk
box to use this hold music feature.
Hope this helps.

How to trigger automount of USB drives in Centos6
In brief: Is there is anyway to trigger the same automount mechanism,
that X appears to use, on unmounted USB drives that are already
connected?
Background:
I've got a C6 server with default desktop GUI installed for the sake
of the onsite admin. There is a bash script I wrote that runs every
night checking for specific folders on any drive and dumps data into
it.
To ensure fs integrity, I

T1 Timing Slips
Does anyone know how to monitor * to see if they are receiving timing slips
on a span connected to a T100P card? I am seeing b-channel restarts quite
often and also getting "No D-channels available" warnings from time to time.
Yesterday I had all the b-channels crash during a MeetMe Conference. Not
good! This PRI is connected to an Avaya Definity PBX that is onsite and

Asterisk/app_rpt and bandwidth
Hello to the list,
I have a question about Asterisk/app_rpt:
When a signal is *not* being received and or transmitted by the radio system
attached to Asterisk/app_rpt via its interface, is the incoming and or
outgoing data suppressed (silence suppression)?
In other words! At idle but still connected to some other device, what data
will be transferred?
I currently don't have access to a

ATA shootout: PAP2T versus Grandstream Handytone 286
I'm considering a situation where I buy about twenty ATA devices.
I've played with the Linksys / Cisco PAP2T, and got that working fine
with some inbound and outbound faxing. The web GUI was okay. I'm
seeing prices around $45 to $50 for this thing. It comes with two FXS
ports, but I only need one FXS.
I've seen the Grandstream Handytone 286 online. It looks promising as

XCP graphical display on VM
Hi All,
I plan to use Xen (most probably XCP) to virtualize
two servers: one running OpenBSD, the other running FreeBSD.
These both servers will be running more or less headless (at least
without any graphical environment). I would want
to add a third server (most probably a Debian Squeeze or Freebsd)
to have a desktop (light, probably IceWM or XFCE).
The physical machine will have VTx but

Re Deprecating partial matching in $.data.frame
As a follow-up to my previous, let me make a concrete suggestion:
Add this as one of the options
df-partial-match = allowed, warn, fail
Set the default to warn for the current R-dev, and migrate it to fail at a later date of
your choosing.
I expect that this is very little more work for the development team, it provides an
extended grace period to those running old code that would

Difficult to compare models
Hi,
I have the follow situation in a ancova analysis:
y (count data)
x1 (continuous data)
x2 (qualitative data)
x2 have 10 levels (a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j)
I make the model
m1 <- glm(y~x1*x2, family=poisson)
then I want to remove the levels h, i and j (make these levels with
intercept = 0 and slope = 0)
A make a new datafile without these levels. This new table is smallest than
