Live CD problems
Hi, I'm trying to repair a remote system using the Live CD. I have VPN access to the subnet where it lives. An onsite person is booting from cd, and running a small script I provided to tweak the default firewall rule set to allow incoming ssh, and set a password for the centos user and start sshd so far so good I can remotely access the system. the problem is the live cd environment is

GDM could not write to you authorization file ... Please contact your system adminstrator
I am the system administrator. I have a system that was built with a default install which resulted in everything in a single file system except for /boot wrote some scripts to split out: /home, /usr, /var, /opt, and /tmp to separate file systems/logical volumes it looks like it ought to work, There's plenty of space in all the filesystems and I can log via ssh and have write access in my

sata AHCI controllers (real and virtual)
I saw something somewhere about AHCI support requiring kernel 2.6.19 or later. But the current CentOS/RHEL stable kernels are 2.6.18 I'm trying to run CentOS/RHEL in a VirtualBox vm, which by default creates sata virtual disks with an AHCI virtual controller. These virtual machines are quite unstable, and I'm wondering if the AHCI virtual controller is the problem. I do have a real

vgrename, lvrename
Hi, I want to rename some volume groups and logical volumes. I was not surprised when it would not let me rename active volumes. So I booted up the system using the CentOS 5.5 LiveCD, but the LiveCD makes the logical volumes browsable using Nautilus, so they are still active and I can't rename them. Tried: /usr/sbin/lvchange -a n VolGroup00/LogVol00 but it still says: LV

Re Deprecating partial matching in $.data.frame
As a follow-up to my previous, let me make a concrete suggestion: Add this as one of the options df-partial-match = allowed, warn, fail Set the default to warn for the current R-dev, and migrate it to fail at a later date of your choosing. I expect that this is very little more work for the development team, it provides an extended grace period to those running old code that would

Difficult to compare models
Hi, I have the follow situation in a ancova analysis: y (count data) x1 (continuous data) x2 (qualitative data) x2 have 10 levels (a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j) I make the model m1 <- glm(y~x1*x2, family=poisson) then I want to remove the levels h, i and j (make these levels with intercept = 0 and slope = 0) A make a new datafile without these levels. This new table is smallest than the

Help on parameters
Hi, I have a follow analysis Trat1 = quantitative variable Trat2 = qualitative variable with 3 levels (A, B, C) Trat3 = qualitative variable with 3 levels (D, E, F) Resp = Response I try to get the parameters to compare with zero, so I make this model: glm(Resp~Trat1*Trat2+Trat1*Trat3-Trat1-1) The -Trat1 is to make comparison of slope with zero. The -1 is to make comparison os intercept with

setup trellis.device to color=F inside the xyplot function
Hi, it is possible to setup trellis.device(color=F) inside teh function xyplot? I try to use > xyplot(ocup~tempo| nitro+estacao,col="white",ylim=c(0,0.7),par.settings=list(color=F)) But dont work, the only way that work for me is call the function > trellis.device(color=F) before the xyplot, but in this way it open a new device for each run. I like that is use the same

LDAP and Linux compatibility
Please excuse a wee bit of cross posting here. It seems that the questions list may not be the appropriate place for this as I've found a number of unanswered posts involving this topic. My FreeBSD workstations are setup with pam_ldap to a centralized openldap server for authentication. This works perfectly for native FreeBSD applications. What I'm running into an issue with are Linux

interesting installation problem - interaction between drbd and xen
Hi, I''ve been building up a new HA system, running Xen on DRBD devices. Configuration this applies to: Debian Lenny xen-linux-system-2.6.26-2-xen-686 package |**|drbd8-modules-2.6.26-2-686 drbd8-modules-2.6.26-2-xen-686 As I''ve been building the system, I ran into an interesting problem, with two symptoms: 1. running VMs would come back up after a reboot, but would hang on

Vintage Attrition Curves
Hi There - New to the list, so hopefully I don't mess this up too much ... I am hoping maybe some of you can help me. I have a problem I'm trying to solve regarding customer accounts, attrition and forecasting. Basically, here is what I want to do (not sure of the best way): 1. Track accounts by vintage (i.e., the month of the date of sale). 2. Forecast total accounts at a given time

1.8.4 and write-through cache
Afternoon I upgraded our oss''s from 1.8.3 to 1.8.4 on Saturday (due to https://bugzilla.lustre.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22755) and suffered a great deal of pain. We have 30 oss''s of multiple vintages. The basic difference between them is * md on first 20 nodes * 3ware 9650SE ML12 on last 10 nodes After the upgrade to 1.8.4 we were seeing terrible throughput on the nodes with

sorting question
I've asked about custom sorting before and it appears that -- in terms of a user-defined order -- it can only be done either by defining a custom class or using various tricks with "order" Just wondering if anyone has a clever way to order "vintages" of the form 2002, 2003H1, 2003H2, 2004, 2005Q1, 2005Q2, etc some have H1 or H2, some have Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4, some are just plain

any recent experience combining GlusterFS w/ Xen?
Hi Folks, Anybody have any recent experience building a small cluster that combines GlusterFS and Xen (with bonus points for a Debian environment)? We''re getting ready to shift from a 2-node Xen/Pacemaker/DRBD environment to a 4-node environment - and I''d really like to be able to create/migrate/failover/delete VMs transparently across all 4 nodes. Seems like Gluster might

help configuring netboot over remote serial terminal
Hi Folks, I'm trying to install Debian onto a headless server (Supermicro X8SIE-LN4F motherboard). The on-board IPMI BMC redirects the serial port to COM3, and I can talk to it just fine over a remote console connection. I've been trying to install Debian remotely, and have the DHCP and TFTP servers working, and things seem to work (at least into the Splash screen) if I'm using

OT: "The Ignorance of Crowds" (was: OT Slightly: )
I see what Dean means about how Digium/Asterisk might have struck a balance between "the cathedral and the bazaar" antipodes of the SW development world. Nicholas Carr's "The Ignorance of Crowds" finally states his "politics" when it says "When you move from the bazaar to the cathedral, it?s best to leave your democratic ideals behind." But treating

Kerberos to file server
Howdy, I may be approaching this problem entirely wrong, or not. Was hoping for a little guidance one way or the other. I've got this AS/400 with gobs of unused file storage on it that I want to share across as a file server to a FreeBSD box. The AS/400 side of things supports NFS and kinda pretends to be a Unix like machine in this role. Users will be booting from diskless clients

Mail Server in the DMZ question
Been trying to puzzle through a firewall layout here involving E-Mail. Would have thought this was a more common kind of scenario, but I haven't been able to Google me up an answer to this one. At present I have an SMTP server (Postfix) in my DMZ that is simply re-routing mail into my secure network. This is a less than optimal setup simply due to having to allow traffic from the DMZ

Quotes from BHH2e
Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend a seminar by George Box where he discussed some of the ideas that will be incorporated in the second edition of Box, Hunter, and Hunter "Statistics for Experimenters" due out in a few months. At the end of the presentation he distributed a list of quotes from the book and I felt that many of these would be appealing to members of this

Another system with no sound
I am also having an issue with no sound on some CentOS desktop systems. I manage about 3 dozen desktops. These are all Lenovo ThinkCentre systems of varying vintages, but there are only 2 distinct sound controllers among all of them: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition
