Filesystem writes unexpectedly slow (CentOS 6.4)
I have a rather large box (2x8-core Xeon, 96GB RAM) where I have a couple of
disk arrays connected on an Areca controller. I just added a new external array,
8 3TB drives in RAID5, and the testing I'm doing right now is on this array, but
this seems to be a problem on this machine in general, on all file systems
(even, possibly, NFS, but I'm not sure about that one yet).
So, if I use

8-15 TB storage: any recommendations?
Hello everyone,
This is not directly related to CentOS but still: we are trying to set up
some storage servers to run under Linux - most likely CentOS. The storage
volume would be in the range specified: 8-15 TB. Any recommendations as far
as hardware?
Thanks.
Boris.

Recommendation for PCI-e SATA RAID 5 card?
Hello:
I am looking for a recommendation for a PCI-e
RAID card for my server. The server has a
PCI-e x16 low profile slot so the card has
to be at most 6.6 inches long x 2.536 inches
high. I would like to use RAID 5 with 3 drives
so I have to have those capabilities.
It has to be CentOS 5.4 compatible (Of course!).
I took a look at the offerings from 3Ware, but
their cards are too long.

Samba enterprise performance?
Hi list,
Due to possible budget cuts, I am looking at finding alternatives to the Netapp
filers we currently have. Obviously, one of the key drivers is the performance
required for our specific application.
On https://www.fotoloog.org/fs.png you can see the load on our main filer. The
key question I have is: looking at that graph, do you think it is worthwhile
looking into Samba further as a

SAS raid controllers
Is anyone running either the newish Adaptec 5805 or the new LSI (3ware) 9750
sas raid controllers in a production environment with Centos 5.3/5.4?
The low price of these cards makes me suspicious, compared to the more
expensive pre-merger 3ware cards and considerably more expensive Areca
ARC-1680. I've been 'burned' by the low cost of Promise raid cards (just as

How long will CENTOS 4.X automatic resync to to time server???
We have several CENTOS 4 and 5 servers. ALL CENTOS servers have NTP setup to sync time server. Several days ago due to power outage all servers are reboot. Due to DNS server did NOT up quickly, CENTOS servers start up and can NOT find time server.
For CENTOS 5.X servers, it did quickly resync to time server after 30 minutes.
For CENTOS 4.X servers, it have been 3 days still NOT sync to time

centos 5.3x64 iso
Hi all,
My 5.3 DVD is ruined and the 5.4 installer won't run on my box w/o
errors (uts not the disk, something to do with the installer itself).
I usually just install 5.3 and then yum it to 5.4.
Does any one know were I can find a 5.3x64 iso file?

[OT/HW] hardware raid -- comment/experience with 3Ware
Greetings,
I am looking for a hardware raid card that supports up to 4 SATA II
hard disks with hot swap (compatible raid cage)
I have short listed two LSI/3Ware cards:
1. 9750-4i
2. 9650SE-4LPML
Both appear to be well supported in Linux.
I would appreciate your personal experience with the CLI tools
provided by LSI.
Can they be configured to send email for disk failures or SMART errors?

heartbeat package in extras trouble with 5.4
I just recently upgraded a box from i386 5.3 -> 5.4. The box has heartbeat packages installed from "extras:"
heartbeat-pils-2.1.3-3.el5.centos
heartbeat-stonith-2.1.3-3.el5.centos
heartbeat-devel-2.1.3-3.el5.centos
heartbeat-2.1.3-3.el5.centos
The heartbeat daemon no longer starts.. the init script reports a success, as well as the logs:

7.0-Release and 3ware 9550SXU w/BBU - horrible write performance
Hi,
I've got a new server with a 3ware 9550SXU with the
Battery. I am using FreeBSD 7.0-Release (tried both
4BSD and ULE) using AMD64 and the 3ware performance
for writes is just plain horrible. Something is
obviously wrong but I'm not sure what.
I've got a 4 disk RAID 10 array.
According to 3dm2 the cache is on. I even tried
setting The StorSave preference to

OT: Need some riser card advice...
Fellow server-builders out there, this is for you. :) I was trying to
build a cheap JBOD type storage solution running CentOS. Ended up
snagging a Supermicro SC826TQ-R800LPB 2U case (12 drives slots) and a
Supermicro X7DBE-O motherboard. Unfortunately, without thinking I
snagged a 3ware 9650SE-12ML SATA RAID card which is a full height card
and thus does not fit in my case.
I have a few

development machine with xen on gentoo
Hi all.
We just put a relative large server in operation (for our measures ;-)
), a 4x Dual Core / Intel with 16GB Ram and a 3ware 9550SX SATA-RAID
with 4 drives. Operating system for the Dom0 is an up-to-date gentoo linux.
Everything runs really fine, there are 4 Domu''s running, 1x gentoo and
2x debian and 1x Windows Server 2003. DomU''s are running blazing fast in

Odd failure of smbd to start from init.d - CentOS 5.4
Hi,
We've got a fresh CentOS 5.4 box, and the only glitch so far is that
/etc/init.d/smb doesn't start smbd. It claims it does - shows "[ok]" - but
only nmbd ends up running. Even setting a higher debugging level in the smbd
flags, nothing logs or shows on the console as to why smbd is immediatly
quitting.
To make it stranger, doing this works fine:
. /etc/init.d/functions

mail server best practices question
Hello all,
About a year ago I set up a mail server on CentOS using this howto:
http://wanderingbarque.com/howtos/mailserver/mailserver.html
I managed to add amavisd-new with clamav and spamassassin.
It runs very well, but it runs on CentOS 5.2, and if I try to upgrade,
amavisd-new and clamav break.
we are now also at the point where a backup mx will need to be implemented.
If necessary I am

move a disk to another machine
I have a centos 6.6 laptop which is having trouble (intermittent boot failures,
or more rightly so, multiple failures, intermittent booting). The laptop is
running selinux.
I pulled the second internal disk out to get my data off of it. I plugged it
into my centos 5.x machine and mounted it. I was able to do a dir listing, but
whrn I tried to cd into any of the directories, I get a bunch of AVC

My firmware seems to be more up to date. Anyway, I will try to update
firmware. I have to check how to do that.

freebsd 7 and areca controller
Hi.
I'm looking at deploying a freebsd 7-release server with some storage
attached to an areca ARC-1680 controller. But this card is not
mentioned in 'man 4 arcmsr'
Areaca's website does mention freebsd as a supported OS
(http://www.areca.com.tw/products/pcietosas1680series.htm).

how many people still use NIS?
Hello listmates,
I have discovered a very strange SFTP problem which I can not connect to
anything but NIS thus far. See here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-server-73/sftp-seems-to-fail-for-nis-accounts-under-openssh-5-x-816020/
http://readlist.com/lists/suse.com/suse-linux-e/38/193419.html
Hence the question: is NIS (YP) still in use much anywhere for
authentication?
Thanks.

1 Gbit/s Ethernet NIC under CentOS
Hello listmates,
As some of you may know we have been having a really bad problem with
Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8169 cards. See here for details:
http://forum.nginx.org/read.php?24,140124,140224
So now my question is, what PCI 1 Gbit/s Ethernet adapters should I
use under CentOS? If you have had a consistent positive experience
with any particular chipset/brand please speak up.
