new laptop: DVD or Blu-ray
Sorin, authoring a movie usually refers to actually creating a disc (e.g. DVD/Blu-Ray with chapter marks and what not). It's the step that comes after you've shot and edited the movie, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_authoring. As far as I know K3B, Bombone DVD and DeVede are capable of authoring DVDs. K3B (version dependent) should even be able to create Blu-Ray discs so that they

Only 1.2x when burning DVD
Hello all I've got a Matshita dvd-ram uj-830sx that is performing very bad on my freshly installed CentOS 5. I'm using k3b and get a steady 1.2x which is way too slow. I think it is supposed to do ~8x and the discs are 16x. Any suggestions? (hdparm -c 1 -d 1 /dev/hdc turned on 32-bit IO but only helped slightly) Johnny Ljunggren

CentOS 6 x86_64 DVD doesn't boot
Hi Everyone, I downloaded the CentOS 6 x86_64 DVD ISOs and burned the first image to a rewritable DVD. When I tried to boot my new home server off it, it didn't, and then this was printed to the screen: ETCDisolinux: Found something at drive = EF No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! boot: The same disc works fine in my 4 year old HP laptop, and when installing CentOS 6 as a KVM.

Created a DVD from Gnome Desktop -CentOS-5.3
I am trying to put the dvd iso image of CentOS-5.4 onto a DVD. I have an LG multi-writer installed. I have used this device on this host to created CDs in the past but this is my first attempt at creating a dvd. When I put a blank DVD-R media in the drive then I see a desktop icon for "CD-ROM Disc" created. When I open the bittorent folder and click on the iso image

HAL Daemon failure on boot up
I've been having a problem for a while: when booting, haldaemon will fail, leaving me without CD/DVD and floppy drives available. Has anyone else had this kind of problem? If so, can anyone suggest a solution? Thanks for listening, Dick -- "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

CD burning issues & questions
I have been having some strange results trying to burn CDs under CentOS. I don't think they are hardware related because I have had some success, in fact most of this usually works. I use k3b for most of my CD and DVD writing - it seems to work fairly well (well, except for wrecking my installation a few weeks ago when it crashed my installation and I had to reinstall to get it back, but

[Slightly OT] Use CentOS to create a bootable Mac OS X DVD from dmg file?
Hi, Sorry if this is only half-CentOS-related. In my office, I'm running CentOS on all my systems (server, workstation, laptop, sandbox PCs). A colleague brought me her MacBook Pro to upgrade it from OS X 10.5.7 to 10.11.6. I downloaded the 5.8 GB dmg file and now I wonder how to create a bootable DVD with this using only Linux tools. 1. Can I simply burn this as a data DVD with K3B? 2.

Cannot play rmvb video files after burning to DVD
Hi, I am running CentOS 5.2. I tried to burn rmvb video files to DVD+R disk using Nautilus 2.16.2, the files were burned to the disk, but could not play it back with errors "Unkown file format". It was no problem to play the same file located on the disk. Any advice please? Thank you. Kind Regards, JH

DVD writer problem
I have an NEC DVD-RW ND2500A (that's not the label I bought it under, but that's what it really is.) It's supposed to read/write CDs, DVDs, DVD+Rs, and DVD-Rs. I'm basically dual booting between XP and CentOS 4. Following the recipe in "The Linux Cookbook", I tried to copy a DVD using: dd if=/dev/hdd of=/tmp/diskfile.iso then cdrecord dev=/dev/hdd fs=32m

Ken, I'm sorry, I had no intention of fighting anyone. I was simply under the impression that you might have actually referred to DVD authoring (creation of the disc, chapters, burning etc,but I understand where you are coming from. I completely agree that the terms interpretation completely depends on the used context. I really did not have any intention of stirring up something. I thought

App for burning CD from MP3s
I would like to be able to make an audio CD directly from some mp3 files I have. I know that isn't the best way due to the lossy nature of the MP3 format, but that's ok for this purpose. K3b is supposed to be able to do this, but I got an unsupported file type error when I tried this. I installed the python-mad decoder that is listed in the k3b document, but I don't see how to get

k3b doesn't burn video disk
I create DVDs from camcorder output. In the past I've always just dragged the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders into k3b and the disk has burned successfully. On this new box I tried to do the same, but k3b says that it 'Found invalid entry in the VIDEO_TS folder (AUDIO_TS). That seems to be utter nonsense, if it means that AUDIO_TS is inside the folder VIDEO_TS. If it doesn't,

k3b -> cddb doesn't work
Copying a CD with k3b is no problem, except I want to include on my copy the cbbd data (from freedb.org). I've configured k3b's cddb section according to instructions at <http://www.freedb.org/en/faq.3.html#15> and read every article google could find about "k3b cddb freedb.org config", but still k3b can't manage it. Grip handles getting the cddb data just fine.

new laptop: DVD or Blu-ray
[I guess were doing top-posting on this sub-thread. Okay, why fight it??] Chris, I didn't know that either. In fact, Sorin answered the question I was thinking of when I posted it. It's really counter-intuitive, even misleading, that "authoring" means burning the DVD... or maybe it means that in the context of DVDs, but means something else in the context of film/video
