Problem: No Serial ports present
Hi, I have wine without Windows instalation and would like to use my HP Coolpix camera unload software. After installation I allowed direct read/write to COM ports in wine.conf, but the program complains there are no COM ports at all. If I run wine --debugmsg +file +relay, I get something like wine works with COM2 (COM1 is mouse) and missing wineoss.drv, MFC42LOC.DLL and reg.dat. How can I

5.5 & gspca
Irritating quirkyness: we have a bunch of videocams. To use, we use gspca. Usually, on an upgrade, I just go into the gspca directory (which appears, from their website, to have not been updated since '07), make clean, make, make install. Having gone up to 5.5, did the same. What's happening now is that it works, delivers the mpgs... but dumps errors in the logs: <snip> kernel:

Does Amazon.com blocks scraping?
Hi there Does anyone know if Amazon.com has any sort of server side script that tries to block scraping activities? I first noticed that if I didn?t change the agent alias, it would fetch a page exactly like the normal one, but without the intial search field(maybe a silly way to prevent scraping). Then after it, I changed to some other alias, and submit a search. I got the result page as

Graphical frontend for gphoto2? (Handling photo cameras in XFCE)
Hi, I'm using CentOS 5.1 with the latest XFCE-4.4 desktop. I try to stick as much as possible to the UNIX tools philosophy, one app per task. For viewing images, I installed GQView. But right now, I wonder what I could probably use for handling photo imports from digital cameras. GThumb tends to be very unmodular, e. g. drawing in many GNOME dependencies, and besides that, I already have

centos 6 gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor
Hi all, I am looking at processes in centos 6. How do I stop gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor from starting. I tried searching in gconf-edit for it but did not find anything. I have ran these commands and rebooted. (I verified they are unchecked now also) gconftool-2 -t bool --list-type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount false gconftool-2 -t bool

within-subject factors in lme
I don't think, this has been answered: > I'm trying to run a 3-way within-subject anova in lme with 3 > fixed factors (Trust, Sex, and Freq), but get stuck with handling > the random effects. As I want to include all the possible random > effects in the model, it would be something more or less > equivalent to using aov > > > fit.aov <- aov(Beta ~ >

Commit interval
Hi there, I was wondering if this is a right list, but let's try... I have quite simple question concerning ext3 fs. Am I able to change "Commit interval" from 5 sec. to something else without rebuilding the kernel? Maybe tune2fs or sth. like that? Using logarithmic y-axis (density) in a histogram
Hi, I am searching for a possibility to display a logarithimic y-axis in a histogram. With plot that's easy (e.g. plot(1:10, log="y") but for histograms this does not work the same way: I tried hist(rnorm(1000), freq=FALSE, seq(-4, 4, .5), ylim=c(0.001, 0.5), log="y") Which gives the expected histogram but also warnings for my log="y" command

glmmPQL - predict (..., type= 'response')?
Dear R users, Is there something like predict (..., type= 'response') for glmmPQL objects or how would I get fitted values on the scale of the response variable for the binomial and the poisson family? Any pointers are appreciated. Thanks, Lorenz - Lorenz Gygax, Dr. sc. nat. Tel: +41 (0)52 368 33 84 / lorenz.gygax at fat.admin.ch Tag der offenen T??r, 11./12. Juni 2004:

CentOS 7, KDE, Dolphin and MTP support
Hi, It looks like KDE's file manager Dolphin doesn't support MTP under CentOS 7. When I plug in an MTP device like my Nikon camera or an Android phone, Digikam shows its content OK, but Dolphin seems to ignore it. For now, my custom CentOS 7 + KDE desktop meets about 99 % of my needs. Now I've decided to tackle the remaining 1 %. Yesterday for example, I managed to correct the

dfs in lme
Dear R-mixed-effects-modelers, I could not answer this questions with the book by Pinheiro & Bates and did not find anything appropriate in the archives, either ... We are preparing a short lecture on degrees of freedom and would like to show lme's as an example as we often need to work with these. I have a problem in understanding how many dfs are needed if random terms are used for

bug in cor (..., use= ...)?
Dear R users, I have not found anything on this in the archives. Does anyone know whehther the parameter use= is not functioning in cor or enlighten me what it is supposed to do? My R version is "R version 1.8.1, 2003-11-21" on Windows 2000. I am hoping to be able to update to 1.9.1 as soon as it has appeared (we are not allowed here to install software on our own and thus I am trying

Hangup on save.image () / q ()
Dear all, I am doing some data handling and tabualtions and then I am using glmmPQL to fit a binomial hierarchical model (which I assign to a new object). If I do a save.image () or a q ('yes') after this, I get the following warning messages: Warning messages: 1: namespaces may not be available when loading 2: names in persistent strings are currently ignored Sometimes R seems to

Contrasts for ordered factors
Dear all, I do not seem to grasp how contrasts are set for ordered factors. Perhaps someone can elighten me? When I work with ordered factors, I would often like to be able to reduce the used polynomial to a simpler one (where possible). Thus, I would like to explicetly code the polynomial but ideally, the intial model (thus, the full polynomial) would be identical to one with an ordered factor.
