Dnsmasq and /etc/hosts
Hi, I just setup CentOS 7 on three boxes to fiddle with it. 1. amandine.sandbox.lan is a headless LAN server 2. bernadette.sandbox.lan is a client desktop 3. raymonde.sandbox.lan is another client desktop I've setup Dnsmasq on amandine.sandbox.lan. Here's the very basic configuration: # /etc/dnsmasq.conf domain-needed bogus-priv interface=enp3s1

Dnsmasq and /etc/hosts

After some more fiddling, I guess I found a solution to my problem. If we formulate the problem differently, we can say that the clients use the information provided by Dnsmasq, but the

Erratic local hostname resolution with Dnsmasq
Hi, My local server is running CentOS 7. The machine has two NICs and is acting as a gateway. For DHCP and DNS, I'm using Dnsmasq. I have a strange little problem with local hostname resolution. Before going into more details, here's my configuration. [root at nestor:~] # ifconfig enp2s0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 inet 192.168.0.2 netmask

Question about dhcpd.leases
Hi, I'm running a DHCP server on my local network. I've noticed something that puzzles me. Leases are written to /var/lib/dhcpd/dhcpd.leases, but only - so it seems to me - if the address is not fixed in any way in dhcpd.conf. Here's a few stanzas of my dhcpd.conf : host babasse { hardware ethernet 00:0d:61:ae:6b:8f; fixed-address 192.168.1.1; option

Fiddling with software RAID1 : continue working with one of two disks failing?
Hi, I'm currently experimenting with software RAID1 on a spare PC with two 40 GB hard disks. Normally, on a desktop PC with only one hard disk, I have a very simple partitioning scheme like this : /dev/hda1 80 MB /boot ext2 /dev/hda2 1 GB swap /dev/hda3 39 GB / ext3 Here's what I'd like to do. Partition a second hard disk (say, /dev/hdb) with three

Using Access Control Lists with SMB2/SMB3 Mounts on Linux Clients
Hi Jeremy, Hi Steve, Hi Ronnie, thanks for your replies and the profound discussion. I think, it's best to demonstrate my problem case along an real world example: The following log of a console sesssion shows how I am doing the mounts on behalf Linux Kernel CIFS-FS Module on the client side against a Samba 4.5 file server (both running on Debian Stretch 9.8) via SMB/CIFS resp. SMB2 protocol:

Support for Bayesian statistics in R
I'm just starting to learn to use R, and although I'm seeing lots of functions aimed at doing orthodox statistical analyses, I don't see the same for Bayesian analyses. What support does R have for Bayesian statistics?

System on time
Hi, To get my system on time, I usually issue these two commands: # ntpdate de.pool.ntp.org # hwclock -w And when I want this to be done on startup, I put the two lines in rc.local. I wonder if this is an orthodox way to do things. Or is there something more appropriate? Niki Kovacs

Problem with lowercase Computernames in winbind samba 3.0.8
Hi, we have several samba servers running as AD members (w2003 domain). Getting the authctxt
My port forwarding changes require an authorization (authentication) context in channel_connect_to(). I'd like to change the dispatch_* functions so that they accept an Authctxt * instead of a void * (this parameter is already used this way). In addition, I'd have to pass the authctxt all the way down to channel_connect_to(). As a side effect, it's possible to get rid of the global

Set hostname via DHCP ?
Hi. I just setup one of my machines as a DHCP server. I'd like it to handle the hostnames of clients. Don't know if this is an orthodox thing to do (feel free to add your comments :oD). Here's the server's relevant lines of dhcpd.conf: --8<------- ... # Envoyer les noms d'h?tes aux clients use-host-decl-names on; # Adresses statiques host babasse { hardware ethernet

CentOS 5.0 and php-yaz
Hi, I have a CentOS 5.0 LAMP server, and I need to install the php-yaz module to implement the Z39.50 protocol (which handles data exchange for public libraries). I've already done this with Debian (a one-liner: apt-get install php-yaz) and also on Slackware (more complicated: compile Yaz, rebuild PHP). Has anyone here ever done this on CentOS? What would be the most orthodox method to

[LLVMdev] Go Programming & LLVM/Clang
I am learning to program with the Go language. I have been following things and I am banking on FreeBSD being a more common OS around the world by V10.0 even on ARM! Most everything I have on my slate is geared towards future FreeBSD. They are gearing to run LLVM/Clang as soon as possible. I am interested in what one of you who know what's up, would suggest to a guy learning programming

Masquerading (packet forwarding) on CentOS 7
Hi, I just migrated my office's server from Slackware64 14.1 to CentOS 7. So far everything's running fine, I just have a few minor details to work out. I removed the firewalld package and replaced it by a simple Iptables script: --8<---------------------------------------------------- #!/bin/sh # # firewall-lan.sh IPT=$(which iptables) MOD=$(which modprobe) SYS=$(which sysctl)

Apache: confusion about virtual hosts and DNS on a local network
Hi, I set up a webserver with Apache on one of the machines on the local network. There's a DNS configured for the LAN, with a dummy domain name (presbytere.local), and every machine is pingable by its hostname. The webserver runs on the machine 'buildbox'. The webserver actually has two (static) websites on it, for testing and fiddling purposes. Each site's pages are stored

Localize CUPS?
Hi, I've been setting up a networked printer in a 100% Linux LAN, and there's only one small problem left: how do I localize the CUPS interface (e. g. the pages I see when opening http://localhost:631 in a browser)? My system is localized in french. LANG is fr_FR.UTF-8 in /etc/sysconfig/i18n. And I checked Firefox: it's supposed to open web content in French. Curiously, I had
