FreeNX : forward audio from server to client ?
Hi, I setup a FreeNX server with a GNOME desktop, and I can access it from a client with the NoMachine client. Everything is running fine, and now I only have two problems left : audio and printing forwarding. I'll follow the "only-slay-one-dragon-at-a-time" rule and take care of audio first. Did anyone manage to forward sound with FreeNX ? Here, server and client are using

SSH without password on CentOS 5 ?
Hi, I'd like to use SSH without password so I can use it in scripts (for example in combination with rsync to do backups). I have Carla Schroder's "Linux Cookbook" and I'm trying out the various receipts, but the one for SSH without a password doesn't work. The book is slightly dated, and I wonder if SSH included in CentOS works differently. Any suggestions? Niki

Router for SOHO network - hardware considerations
Hi, Last week I finished installing a small network in a private school : one server (an old IBM X225), seventeen desktops (Fujitsu Siemens PIV 2.4 GHZ, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HD), all running CentOS 5.5. One extra machine is acting as a router, in that it is installed between the DSL modem and the network, with two Ethernet cards, and it's taking care of DHCP, DNS, NTP and also acts like a

Migrate Outlook Express mail to Thunderbird?
Hi, A friend's laptop just quit working under Windows XP, so I 1) booted a Knoppix Live CD 2) configured the thing for my LAN 3) scp'ed recursively Documents\ and\ Settings/, 4) wiped the hard disk clean and 5) installed CentOS 5.1. No dual-boot, no prisoners, just 100% GNU/Linux :oD I managed to find the contents of the Outlook Express Mailboxes in some obscure subdirectory.

Set hostname via DHCP ?
Hi. I just setup one of my machines as a DHCP server. I'd like it to handle the hostnames of clients. Don't know if this is an orthodox thing to do (feel free to add your comments :oD). Here's the server's relevant lines of dhcpd.conf: --8<------- ... # Envoyer les noms d'h?tes aux clients use-host-decl-names on; # Adresses statiques host babasse { hardware ethernet

XFCE-Terminal can't display latin1 encoding
Hi, Much of my work consists in connecting to the MySQL monitor on our public library database server and working in it. Until recently, I've been using either Gnome-Terminal in GNOME, or Konsole in KDE. Since all the systems, both server and clients, default to fr_FR.UTF-8, and MySQL uses a default latin1 charset, I usually switch the displayed charset within Gnome-Terminal or Konsole.

FreeNX authenticates but no desktop on centos 5 ??
Hi all, I am new to CentOS and freeNX -- both look really awesome, a huge thanks to all the people making them happen. I am having a problem with freenx that appears to be specific to centos 5. my client authenticates but then no desktop comes up. however, when I connect to a similar machine running centos 4.4, I authenticate and the gnome desktop just pops up sweet as can be. I also have a vnc

new freenx and nx RPMS released, manual action for x86_64
There are new RPMS released for nx and freenx in the CentOS-4 and CentOS-5 Extras repository. I normally do not announce that here, as those can easily be obtained on a normal "yum upgrade/update", however in this case there are special actions required *_IF_* you have the x86_64 architecture for either CentOS-4 or CentOS-5 with the current versions of nx and freenx installed. Persistent desktop icons ?
Hi, Is it possible to configure persistent desktop icons, e. g. shortcuts that users can't delete ? On most of my client desktops, I have some home-made shortcuts, like here for example : http://www.microlinux.fr/configurations.html The shortcut on the lower left corner of the screen launches the public library management system. Most of the users are quite computer-illiterate, and more

freenx-0.5.0-8.c4.noarch.rpm is in testing
We have created a new version of freenx (freenx-0.5.0-8.c4.noarch.rpm) and moved it to the testing repo. This is based on the code displayed at the LWE in San Francisco ... http://lwn.net/Articles/146825/ http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8489 (though it is not officially released as stable by the freenx people) This version should handle printing and reconnecting to running sessions much

NFS and firewall issues
Hi, I have a small home LAN, where one machine (192.168.1.1) connects to the internet via dialup (no DSL here) and shares the connection with IP masquerading. To achieve this, I tried out various recipes found on the internet, and finally put this in /etc/rc.d/rc.local: --8<------ rc.local ------------ #!/bin/sh # # This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts. # You can

Centos 6.x and Freenx issue..
Finally got a chance to install Centos 6.x x86_64 version and having an issue with the latest version of freenx. This is a desktop install on a esxi 5 with all updates and only thing I have installed is the latest vmware tools. When I enable the extras repo and install the nx-3.5.0-1.el6.ay.x86_64.rpm and freenx-0.7.3-8.el6.ay.x86_64.rpm. When I try to logon the desktop pops up but I get the

Traditional network interface naming scheme vs. persistent naming
Hi, I'm currently experimenting with CentOS 7 in order to get a grasp of everything that's new. After having read the FAQ entry on network interface names, I decided to revert to the tradictional interface naming scheme by adding the relevant kernel options to the bootloader. This went well, I have now two interfaces names 'eth0' and 'eth1' as expected. In my office

FreeNX documentation and other miscellanea
I was having trouble connecting to the server that I am using for remote development so I updated things and rebooted. Connected into FreeNX nicely after that...wonder if there is issues with memory leaks or something... Anyway, it appears that the nxagent grabbed port 3000 which is what I was using for rubyonrails/webrick (I probably can change that) which sort of tells me that when I first

CentOS 6.0 and freenx

yum-proxy?
Hi, I've been using Debian for a few years, and there was one nifty little app that made installing and updating so much easier: apt-proxy. Most of the time, I'm taking care of small LANs with an average of five client PCs. But this is a very remote place in South France, so most villages only have 512 kbps DSL. One major update for openoffice.org-*, and I have to wait the whole day

General questions about security
Hi, I admit I never gave security that much thought, that is, except the most basic security rules like choosing good passwords, or reasonable file and directory permissions. But now I have to change that, since I'll soon have to setup a dedicated production server for our public libraries. I wonder where to begin. I would say first thing is get a series of "auditing" tools

KISS networking with CentOS 7
Hi, I'm currently experimenting with CentOS 7 on a couple of installations. I'm reasonably proficient with CentOS 5.x and 6.x. I'd like to manage networking using a more traditional approach (Keep It Simple Stupid). Here's what I tried so far, starting from a minimal install: Install net-tools (to be able to use ifconfig). Get rid of NetworkManager: # yum remove

Revisited - No fullscreen on FreeNX
This topic came up some time back and I pretty much ignored it, but the "itch" came back to find out why. Searching through the FreeNX/knx list came up with the reason sessions did not come up full-screen even though the session definition was set to fullscreen. Apparently there is an oversight in /usr/bin/nxnode, the script is never retrieving the fullscreen flag from the parameters
