Samba share configuration: r/w for some users, read-only for others
Hi, I'm using Samba for some basic setups like open shares for everybody, or restricted shares with Samba users and passwords. So far, everything works fine. I have two situations which both more or less amount to the same, and I don't know how to configure it. One is in a school, the other one in a town hall. 1) In the school, I'd like to configure a share that is readable and

CentOS or other Linux Internet Router/Gateway
Hi Everyone, I've got kids who are growing older and I want to build a Linux box to filter Internet access. I've got six computers on the Internet, plus the laptops -- most run Windows. I'm not sure if it's called a router or gateway or...? I don't mind doing the leg work, I just don't know where to start. I'm pretty sure I'm *not* looking for a web server (though

Squid and HTTPS interception on CentOS 7 ?

The law in France (Code P?nal, article 227-24) states that a public network is not allowed to broadcast messages containing violence, pornography or any content contrary to basic human dignity, which is theoretically punishable with three years of prison or a 75.000 ? fee. proxy server - ipcop vs CentOS
I have purchased a used Compaq DL360 which I was going to use as a proxy server. Presently, we are using a cheap box with ipcop which is working fine but it didn't have much RAM (64MB), etc. This new box we will want to run squid and perhaps dansguardian for filtering (this is a non-profit company) and I'm wondering if I should just put ipcop on it or would it be smarter/better to install

Hash results with Wine-installed programs
I am doing a research project for a digital forensics assignment, revolving around using hashes to identify known files in commonly used software packages. However one problem that I have is the inability to compare files from multiple instances of the same software. It isn't exactly economical to purchase 50 different computers to see how the program changes across operating systems and

Fw: setting an exception source to a redirect rule?
I recently setup shorewall on my freshly rebuilt router box. I setup transparent proxying using transproxy/dansguardian/privoxy/squid. My current rules for the redirect are: REDIRECT loc 81 tcp www - !192.168.100.0/24 ACCEPT fw net tcp www How do I set this so that all the request are redirected except for requests FROM a certain machine (192.168.100.11)? LLVM Social in Austin - Nov. 15?
Hi everyone, There seems to be a good level of interest in this; so we should settle on a time and location. It has been pointed out that previous socials were held at http://bbrovers.com/ - we seem to have a preference for the availability of alcoholic beverages, and otherwise no strong opinions have been expressed. Logistically, we should pick someplace likely to have flexibility regarding

Security on lan
Hello, I would like your opionion on how secure samba is over an network. The thing is that where i live we all have 100mbps switched network to the internet. The whole town is using this. Is it safe to use samba directly over the network with encrypted password if i have for example a server in another part of the town. I can then set up with allow host so that only my computer can access the

Results of 13 month study on reducing telemarketing calls
Hello-- I've been playing with the privacy options on my home/home-office system since August last year, and have some results, gleaned from my CDR records, which over the last 13 months, number a total of 8672, which includes incoming, as well as outgoing calls. Before I start spitting out numbers, let me note that with the current setup, I haven't had to tell a single telemarketer

Rsync Permission Issues
Hi all, I'm new to rsync and have a problem I cannot resolve even after plowing through the lists. I have an rsync server setup with an rsync client. I am trying to backup a directory structure that is over four levels deep. Rsync does great until it hits that fourth level. Then it errors out for each file in that fourth level similar to this: rsync: recv_generator: mkdir

LLVM Social in Austin - Nov. 15?
Hello again, Because the LLVM in HPC workshop will be in Austin on Nov. 15th (http://llvm-hpc2-workshop.github.io/), we'll have an anomalously-high density of LLVM developers in Austin that day. I think it would be a great evening to have an LLVM social! I'm not familair with the Austin area, but I've cc'd some folks who are (or at least were) in Austin, so hopefully we can get
