CentOS 5.4 64-bit: Java web browser plugin for 64-bit FireFox?
Does there exist *anywhere* a Java web browser plugin for 64-bit
FireFox? The SUN 1.6<mumble> JDK (jdk-6u18-linux-amd64.rpm) does NOT
include the Java web browser plugin library.
java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-1.2.b09.el5.x86_64.rpm does not have one
either. Should I install the *32-bit* SUN 1.6<mumble> JDK and use the
32-64 bit wrapper? I've searched the web and read the wiki

CentOS/RHEL's build of firefox hardwired to evolution -- how to change this
For some awful reason (can someone explain why?), the RHEL/CentOS build
of firefox is hardwired to use evolution as its mailto client. With FF
2.<mumble> this was fixable with an about:config setting. With
3.0.<mumble>, it seems not. What is the proper way of fixing this?
*I* ended up doing a 'sudo rpm -e evolution' and then doing a
'sudo ln -s

Booting from a USB hard drive?
I'm trying to learn Asterisk (specifically Trixbox) and, as you
probably know, it runs on CentOS. I want to run it on my laptop and
thought that I could install it to an external USB hard drive, like
I've done with Fedora 12 and Linux Mint 8 (I like to keep my small
CentOS/Windows dual booting hard drive in the laptop's hard drive
slot). But it won't work. It kept giving me hard

Moving LVM from one machine to another
My CentOS4 machine died (CPU cooler failure, causing CPU to die).
In this machine I had 5 Tbyte disks in a RAID5, and LVM structures
on that.
Now I've moved those 5 disks onto a CentOS5 machine and the RAID array
is being rebuilt. However the LVM structures weren't detected at boot
time. I was able to "vgscan" and 'vgchange -a y' to bring the volume
online and then

rpm question
When I install some RPMS like openoffice 3 on centos x85_64
is there some command that will leave all the actual files alone (leave
them installed)
but just remove the RPM name from the RPM database so centos now things
the packages are not installed?
Reason is I was wanting to do this so a next yum update does not get all
confused...
and the yum update happens just like I never installed

Hardware RAID 10 server - reformat NTFS partition to ext3 and resize for Centos 5.5
Here's the situation. I have a dual boot machine - originally had Red
Hat and Windows 2000 Pro. The NTFS partition never did seem to 'get
along' with the Adaptec 2400A caching RAID controller. Linux always
seemed to like the I2O drivers. I went from RH Enterprise to now running
Centos 5.5. Works great! I really don't want the 200 gigs worth of NTFS.
Can't I just run

Firefox 78 under CentOS 6 -- no sound?
I did a yum update on my CentOS 6 laptop and it upgraded Firefox to 78, and
FF stopped seeing my mic and speakers. Is there some magic I need to do? As
a short term (?) fix, I downgraded back to Firefox 68. My system is otherwise
up-to-date.

Updated Spam Assassin for CentOS 5...
I am wondering about updating the version of Spam Assassin on my CentOS 5 mail
server. The current version, 3.3.1-4.el5 (stock RHEL version), has been
'leaking' recently. I suspect I need some newer match rules to detect some of
the newer flavors of spam. I see that in rpmforge's extras repo is version
3.3.2-4.el5.rfx -- is this version worth installing? Are there even newer

info about hdds in raid
How can I tell wich HDD to swap, when the "cat /proc/mdstat" says one HDD of the RAID1 array has died?
Does the HDD's has some serial numbers, that I can see in "reality", and I can get that number from e.g.: a commands output?
How could I know wich HDD to swap in e.g.: a RAID1 array?
thank you

Lilo for CentOS 5?
Does there exist a version of Lilo built for x86_64 CentOS 5? It does not
seem to be on the DVD. *I* really, really, prefer Lilo over Grub.

lvm and /dev/cdrom: open failed: No medium found
Hi,
every lvm command gives one line with:
/dev/cdrom: open failed: No medium found
I looked at
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=431901
and changed filter in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf to
filter = [ "r|/dev/cdrom|", "a/.*/" ]
then deleted cache /etc/lvm/cache/.cache
This seems to help, but after a while the message reappears.
Is there a way to get rid of it, because

USB Serial ports (ttyACMn) CentOS 6.7 (64-bit) vs. CentOS 6.7 (64-bit)
I have two computers: both running CentOS 6.7, 64-bit, with
kernel 2.6.32-573.12.1.el6.x86_64. One is a laptop with an 2 core Intel
processor and the other is a desktop machine with a 4 core AMD processor. Both
with selinux enabled.
I have a USB serial port device (a RR-CirKits LCC-Buffer USB). On the desktop

Terminal emulation and serial ports
I have to reinit a firewall that can only be done from its console port,
and I do not have an XP system with Hyperterminal on it.
So I went through the archive and learned that minicom could do the job
for me. I installed it and went to configure it (minicom -s). I can
set the speeds, but the challenge is selecting the serial device. I
have a Serial-to-USB dongle, and when I connect it,

CentOS6: HELP! EFI boot fails after replacing disks...
OK, I wanted to replace the 500G disks in a Dell T20 server with new 2TB
disks. The machine has 4 SATA ports, one used for the optical disk and three
for the hard drives. It is set up with /dev/sda and /dev/sdb with each three
partitions:
1 -- VFAT (for EFI)
2 -- ext4 (for /boot)
3 -- LVM
/dev/sda2 and /dev/sdb2 are a mirror raid (/dev/md0)
/dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3 are a mirror raid

Change system-wide default configuration for FF and OO with /etc/skel
Hi,
I'm using a heavily tweaked CentOS 5.4 for desktop installs (here's what
it looks like: http://www.microlinux.fr/captures.html).
For every app I install, I try to configure a sensible default
configuration system-wide for all users. For example, once I found a
nice configuration for XMMS (default skin, loads of plugins, orange On
Screen Display in a nice font, etcetera), I put my

Moving hard drives
Hi All,
I have a server that is running nicely, except I have hit the maximum RAM (4gb) and I wish to add more.
It is an ASUS board, AMD X64 dual core, nvidia nic.
What I want going to move to is a dell board, Intel Pentium M dual code, which supports 8gb of RAM.
Can I just unplug the HD and move it to the new server and boot it up?
I assume that the NIC will need to be re-setup, but what

How to format a USB drive?
I have a usb drive, /media/disk and I want to reformat it. There
are several questions that come up:
How can I determine the current format?
Do I use the mkfs command?
Many thanks...
