Building a big.matrix using foreach
Hi there!
I have become a big fan of the 'foreach' package allowing me to do a
lot of stuff in parallel. For example, evaluating the function f on
all elements in a vector x is easily accomplished:
foreach(i=1:length(x),.combine=c) %dopar% f(x[i])
Here the .combine=c option tells foreach to combine output using the
c()-function. That is, to return it as a vector.
Today I discovered the

For->lapply->parallel apply
Dear all,
I would like to ask your help understand the subsequent steps for making my program faster.
The following code:
Gauslist<-array(data=NA,dim=c(dimx,dimy,dimz))
for (i in c(1:dimz)){
print(sprintf('Creating the %d map',i));
Gauslist[,,i]<-f <- GaussRF(x=x, y=y, model=model, grid=TRUE,param=c(mean,variance,nugget,scale,Whit.alpha))
}
creates 100 GaussMaps (each

parallel scanner support (general question)
Hi,
I'm using the Umax Astra 610p scanner (parallel port scanner).
Unfortunately, it is not supported by sane as Umax is not publishing specs.
Searching on google I found out that some people got it working using
vmware but nobody could get it working with wine.
That is surprising me because people seem to get lots of complicated
windows applications working but not a small scanner

which firewall to automatically block bandwidth abusers?
Hi,
I'm looking for a firewall (preferably on Linux / UNIX) that could
automatically block bandwidth abusers as soon as a connection goes
over a certain speed, or limit - i.e. either more than say 3Mb/s or
10GB in a giving period (like weekly / monthly).
But, I need it to block the IP to, or where the traffic comes from, or
goes to. i.e. a user logs into a web server and upload a LOT of

is Intel VT-d "really" necessary?
Hi all,
I'm just curios and would like some input from the community on this
one. We're busy budgeting for a couple of new servers and I thought it
would be good to try out the Core i7 CPU's, but see the majority of
them don't offer VT-d, but just VT-x. Looking at the LGA1366 range,
only the "Intel lga1366 i7 980XE" (from the list of what our suppliers
stock) have VT-d,

how to find source of data loss / corruption
Hi,
2 websites, hosted on 2 different CentOS 5.7 servers (one being very
new, about 3 weeks old) keeps loosing data - but it's more like it's
corrupted than being deleted.
For example, a photo would be uploaded last night and today when we
checked it, it doesn't show on the website. So we check if the file is
on the server, and exists but is 0KB in size. Last night it still
worked

how to debug windows not starting
Hi all
I have a CentOS 5.1 x64 server, running Xen version 3.1.0-53.1.21.el5 &
Windows 2003 VM.
After doing a software update in Windows (via Remote Desktop), I
rebooted windows, but it never came back up. So, I logged into the
server via SSH, and destoyed the VM, and recrated it. Yet it doesn''t
boot up ( I can''t connect to it via RDP).
So, how do I debug it to see

how to downgrade from CentOS 5.2 to CentOS 5.1?
I've run into some trouble with a new cPanel VPS, and noticed that it's
running CentOS by default, installed via the CentOS http server.
My question is, how do I downgrade CentOS to 5.1?

how to install ip6tables?
Hi all,
I'm sorry if this is a quick dumb one, but how does one install ip6tables?
Running yum install ip6tables doesn't return anything, even with the
rpmforge repository enabled:

[CORRECTED] Postfix SMTP authentication on remote relay serve
Sorry about the previous post, I see the subject had a typo. So here's
the correct one :)
Does anyone know how to configure Postfix to use SMTP authentication
on a relay host?
i.e. I have a Linux server, running PostFix on an ADSL line with a
dynamic IP. Thus I can't just send out emails from this server but
need to relay it via our ISP's SMTP server, which is very unreliable.

how do I find out which nameserver returns a DNS query?
Hi all
If I do a "dig mydomain.co.za" from a Linux server, how do I know which
DNS nameserver returns the queries?
I seem to have a faulty DNS server, but can't see which one, so I want
to find out which nameserver (if there's 4 - ns1.myserver, ns2.myserver,
ns3.myserver & ns4.myserver) returns the queries?

how do I create a custom CD from an existing CD?
Hi all
This may sound funny, but I can't get onto any websites right now, so I
can't even google. I want to customize the contents of my CentOS 5.1 x64
CD, and re-create the ISO to write to CD again and install on a server.
I know it's got something todo with mkisofs, but I'm not 100% sure what
the commands should look like
Can someone please give me a sample of the whole

how to control Hard Drive light from Linux?
Hi all,
Does anyone know how to control a hard drive light from Linux? I'm
building a 24bay Linux File server which will run software RAID and I
need an easy way for the engineers to see which HDD has gone bad.
Most of our NAS devices has 2 lights on the hard drive cages and they
automatically signal a bad one (reg light, light constant on , etc)
but I can't figure out how todo this from
