Lilo for CentOS 5?
Does there exist a version of Lilo built for x86_64 CentOS 5? It does not seem to be on the DVD. *I* really, really, prefer Lilo over Grub. -- Robert Heller -- 978-544-6933 Deepwoods Software -- Download the Model Railroad System http://www.deepsoft.com/ -- Binaries for Linux and MS-Windows heller at deepsoft.com -- http://www.deepsoft.com/ModelRailroadSystem/

Laptop hd incorrect
Hello I'm new to linux and am trying to install centos 5.3 on my laptop and it has an ata drive but centos does not see the had or cdrom. Googleing does not give me much to check. The laptop is a hp-g60 249wm, latest bios update. The bios does not have any ability to change drive information. The bios basically allows me to only set time, date and boot item. Question about the ahci kernel module: missing in the CentOS (4) Plus kernel
Is there some reason the ahci kernel module is *missing* from the 2.6.9-89.0.16.plus.c4 kernel? It is in the standard 2.6.9-89.0.16.EL kernel. Is this due to an oversight or is there some sort of conflict? I wanted to add IEEE1394 support to my system running CentOS 4.8. I *looks* like what I need to do is download the kernel SRPM and patch the config to include the IEEE1394 modules and

CentOS/RHEL's build of firefox hardwired to evolution -- how to change this
For some awful reason (can someone explain why?), the RHEL/CentOS build of firefox is hardwired to use evolution as its mailto client. With FF 2.<mumble> this was fixable with an about:config setting. With 3.0.<mumble>, it seems not. What is the proper way of fixing this? *I* ended up doing a 'sudo rpm -e evolution' and then doing a 'sudo ln -s

Question about running a CentOS4.8 (32-bit) guest under CentOS5.4xen (64-bit)
I am trying to run my old CentOS4.8 (32-bit) system as a guest system under CentOS5.4xen (64-bit). I followed the instructions in Appendix A of the xen user manual (/usr/share/doc/xen-3.0.3/pdf/user.pdf) and created a 'disk image' (actually a 10gig LVM logical volume: sauron.deepsoft.com% sudo fdisk -l /dev/mapper/sauron-c4guest Disk /dev/mapper/sauron-c4guest: 10.7 GB, 10737418240

CentOS 5.4 64-bit: Java web browser plugin for 64-bit FireFox?
Does there exist *anywhere* a Java web browser plugin for 64-bit FireFox? The SUN 1.6<mumble> JDK (jdk-6u18-linux-amd64.rpm) does NOT include the Java web browser plugin library. java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-1.2.b09.el5.x86_64.rpm does not have one either. Should I install the *32-bit* SUN 1.6<mumble> JDK and use the 32-64 bit wrapper? I've searched the web and read the wiki

Moving LVM from one machine to another
My CentOS4 machine died (CPU cooler failure, causing CPU to die). In this machine I had 5 Tbyte disks in a RAID5, and LVM structures on that. Now I've moved those 5 disks onto a CentOS5 machine and the RAID array is being rebuilt. However the LVM structures weren't detected at boot time. I was able to "vgscan" and 'vgchange -a y' to bring the volume online and then

PAE or use 64-bit?
Hi all, Which would you recommend for a 4GB+ machine? A 32-bit install with PAE-enabled kernel or just use 64-bit? Regards, Matt -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. Follow it and there is no end. Stay with the ancient Tao, Move with the present.

cups / cli stopped print jobs problem
On occasion, we get a printer that becomes disabled, and jobs begin to queue up. When the issue is resolved, we re-enable the printer and usually all the jobs print out. However, sometimes the first job never prints, but the others do. The cups interface shows the job is stopped. IfI restart the job in the cups interface, it prints. Is there a way to determine, via the command line, if a

rpm question
When I install some RPMS like openoffice 3 on centos x85_64 is there some command that will leave all the actual files alone (leave them installed) but just remove the RPM name from the RPM database so centos now things the packages are not installed? Reason is I was wanting to do this so a next yum update does not get all confused... and the yum update happens just like I never installed

[off-topic] Question about csh.
Hi I received this request from a user and could not find the solution. I would like to know if someone already solved this: "At the command prompt I used to be able to type the first letter of a line command and then by using the up arrow key, scroll through all of the line commands, that begin with that letter, that I had previously executed." It's a machine with CentOS-5.3,

Video capture under CentOS
I recently purchased a Diamond VC500 video capture device that runs on the USB. It has some interesting issues under Windoze, but I was wondering: I did a google for video catpreu and linux and most of what I found either said it can't be done or the software that did/does it is obsolete. Can anyone point me in a better direction (and which way)? Thanks. mhr

[Slightly OT] Data Preservation - More
Hi All, As it turns out these boxes are Red Hat Enterprise Linux and not Windows!. I am not sure how the person who asked me to do the work does not know what he had! I guess he was the CEO though! So I think this process becomes simpler. I should just be able to insert the live cd and do a cp -r on / to the destination USB drive, correct? -ML
