Robert Schetterer <robert at schetterer.org> writes: >> Anyway, why use lmtp over lda ? > > i.e avoid backscatter by overquota A clarification on this: backscatter (or rather, ambiguous NDR notices that claim many users are over quota rather than just one) is a result of a local mailer that support multiple recipient delivery in one invocation, but can only return one result

Dealing with backscatter
Hi all, I've had to deal with a sudden surge of backscatter email lately. Would anyone be able to suggest to solutions that worked for them regarding this problem? We are using Scalix 11 as our email platform. It uses Sendmail MTA for those who may not be familiar. Thanks, Matt -- Stand before it and there is no beginning. Follow it and there is no end. Sendmail + dovecot-lda + LDAP
Hi, I experince some problems with setting up Sendmail with the LDAP database for virtual mail accounts. Why i'm not writing to the LDAP mailing list? I believe, that the reason of my problem is in configuring dovecot-deliver. What i have: ?- FreeBSD ?- sendmail (Version 8.14.4 with LDAP support installed from ports)? ?- Dovecot LDA + dovecot (as pop3/imap) ?- Cyrus Sasl (authdaemon for

Sendmail + Deliver as an LDA probs
Hi, I'm having trouble setting up sendmail to be able to use dovecot deliver as an LDA... I don't want to be able to deliver mail locally, everything should go via deliver (virtual user setup)... And i'm confused about all the procmail/lda entry's in different sendmail config files... When using $# deliver -u testuser < testmail <-- he delivers my mail in the correct

Dovecot Virtual Users & Sendmail
Not directly Dovecot, but a configuration problem. We have a working set-up with Dovecot+Procmail+Sendmail, using POP-before-SMTP. We want to be able to offer email accounts to some local schools, using SquirrelMail (keeps their costs & maintenance down). The whole arrangement is working, but we don't want to have to have 300+ School children as users of our Red Hat Enterprise server,

Deliver, sendmail, virtual users, and catch-all addresses
I have spent a long time looking into this and can't find the answer I'm looking for, so I'm asking here. I'm cutting the example down to just the bare minimums. This is NOT my actual configuration, but is sufficient for asking this question: How can I use dovecot's deliver LDA to deliver to virtual users, but then have unknown virtual users fall back to catch-all

Hi all, I set my sendmail.mc file to have a SMART_HOST entry of mail.xyz.com I do "make" and "service sendmail restart" ... I should be good, but no. :) If I do "host mail.xyz.com" I get the correct address and if I "telnet mail.xyz.com 25" I get a connection. however when I do a test mail - its trying to RELAY to another host. I thought SMART_HOST was

[oOT] ploenk.net@eplus.blackberry.com please fix your mail forwarding
I've received a bunch of these blackberry backscatter messages over the past week and have been unable to determine which list user is the cause of this. Whoever is forwarding your email to the blackberry address below, please fix the situation. It's becoming really annoying receiving these backscatter bounces that give no clue as to what the nature of the problem is. Thanks. Your

I am sending an email from my machine devcentos5x64. the transcript below (hangs for 60 seconds) at the line: MAIL From:<root at devcentos5x64.msgnet.com> SIZE=56 AUTH=root at devcentos5x64.msgnet.com The email succeeds - but I am trying to figure out the 60 second delay. Neither email server is busy. Nothing is waiting. the DNS on both machines point to the same nameserver. The DNS

Quota status to postfix in distributed environment
Out of curiosity would it be possible to configure dovecot in such a way that if a message had been accepted by postfix because it couldn't check quota the message was delivered anyway, despite being over quota? I'd much rather that then risk backscatter. (I used to have quotas, but with the size of disks I've found it easier to simply have a "clue bat?approach and a reasonable

Dovecot Quota Problem
I'm using Dovecot LDA with Exim. I'm also using Dictionary Quotas in a MySQL database. I want to avoid backscatter completely, so I set "quota_full_tempfail = yes" and handle quota checking in the Exim RCPT ACL during the SMTP session. The problem lies in the case where a user's account is nearly full. Smaller messages will continue to come through, but a larger message

sendmail and relaying
I think my sendmail is not correctly set. It says the default is to disallow relaying. I am running centos 4.8 and I think sendmail is relaying for anything. Based on this: http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/chk-89f.html#RELAYING I added|: FEATURE(relay_hosts_only) to my sendmail.mc file and restarted sendmail. I am still seeing connects that get relayed and are not in my /etc/mail/access
