Fix passwd/shadow/group files?
I've been copying old passwd/shadow/group files from system to system
for ages across different distributions/updates and would like to
get them back in sync with each other so the system tools will
work. Now they hang like:
#userdel irose
hangs forever, syslog says:

Sudo(ers) distrobution system/script
Just wondering if anyone out there is using sudo across a bunch of
machines and has a system/script for painlessly distributing a master
sudoers file? is it as easy as a daily cronjob running wget/scp/rsync?

Advice, Please.
Hello,
I have a home setup where I am using Centos 4.4 as a sort of mail server.
This is what I have done.
I have it configured to pop mail locally. I have fetchmail configured to dl
from my provider my families mail through a cron job and .fetchmailrc in
their home directories. They then pop the server to retrieve their mail.
They send their mail directly through the provider.
I have

sendmail and relaying
I think my sendmail is not correctly set. It says the default is to
disallow relaying.
I am running centos 4.8 and I think sendmail is relaying for anything.
Based on this:
http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/chk-89f.html#RELAYING
I added|:
FEATURE(relay_hosts_only)
to my sendmail.mc file and restarted sendmail. I am still seeing
connects that get relayed and are
not in my /etc/mail/access

finding out the time of the second-to-last reboot
Hello all,
I've got a CentOS box that became non-responsive today for some obscure
reason and had to be rebooted. Is there a way to find out when it last had
to be rebooted before today? uptime gives you no history past the very last
reboot, so obviously I need to find some other way to get an answer to my
question.
Thanks for any and all tips.
Boris.

Monitoring services
What's available to remotely monitor services? What I'd like is something
that can run scripts for each service to connect to a port and verify that
it's up, and then send me an SMS message (phone text) to let me know which,
if any, are down.
Also, does a script exist that checks all the services listed by chkconfig
and reports those that should be up but are down?

Puppet and Cfengine Differences
Hello,
I''ve recently begun looking at Puppet as an alternative to Cfengine and I
have a couple of questions.
1) Besides the information posted on the Puppet website, are there any
critical differences between Puppet and Cfengine?
2) Does Puppet allow for client-specific file text manipulation. For
instance, in Cfengine I can add a line of text to a file if the line doesn''t

cfengine and crontab
The docs to installing cfengine refers to /var/spool/cron/crontabs/root
That doesn't exist. Nor does /etc/crontab. Heck I remember that from the
"old days", now there are lots of cron entries, in /etc but no crontab.
Not installed by default. So, I'm hunting that one down. Nate, what did
you wind up doing?? Ric

apache rewrite
Is there some easy way to rewrite just the base URL to another URL but
leave all other URL's unmolested?
i.e.
http://www.example.com = rewrite to another URL
http://www.example.com/files = deliver from the assigned subdirectory
obviously this...
Redirect / http://www.other_url.com
redirects everything
and I don't want /files to be redirected

Bacula
We are presently looking into alternative backup strategies for our
networked servers and are considering Bacula. Does anyone have any
opinions on this application, good and bad, to share? Further, is
there a CentOS4 specific rpm build available for this in a yum
repository (I note that CentOS4 tags have been added to the Bacula
source tree)?

Jim

Remote archiving with tar over ssh
I am trying to create a one line command that will:
1. Find all files ending in .conf
2. tar these over ssh to a remote server.
I have reached this point in my trials.
a. I can find the files.
b. I can tar them locally.
c. I can get a simple fileset tar'ed to a remote server over ssh
using tar -zvcf - /some/fileset | ssh host.domain.tld "cat >
/backup/tarfile.tar.gz
d. I cannot

cfengine vs. puppet
Hello All,
I have been tasked with getting some configuration management system
running at work.
We have about 20 web servers running (some virtual and some physical),
and we are trying to come up with a tool that will assist setting up
new boxes as we bring them online, as well as maintaining existing
systems when changes are necessary.
After spending a little bit of time searching around

system management - what do you use to manage your CentOS systems?
Greetings everyone.
Let me preface this with the following, I know this is not specific to
CentOS but I do value the input given by *many* of the users on this
list.
I can not think of a more appropriate place to ask these questions.
Let me just break down my setup:
20 CentOS 4 servers, all running apache.
The only things that are unique on each server are the network
settings and the apache
