Opening a jar file from the desktop
I have java-1.7.0-openjdk installed on a CentOS-6.3 x86_64 system. On my desktop I have a jar file containing a calculator program which runs fine on CentOS-5 and on MS-Windows machines. On the CentOS-6 system when I right-click on the jar file and say open with java nothing apparently happens. When I double-click on it then I see a file browser window offering to extract the contents but there

To clarify, the virbr0 IP address

Installing a gnome-desktop on CENTOS-6.3 following minimal system install.
I am still trying without much success to get a desktop on my minimal + virtualization install of a CentOS-6.3 kvm host. When I run startx I get a desktop but other than the icons for computer, home and trash there is nothing displayed. I can right click the mouse and from there I can open a terminal window and creat a folder on the desktop but I have no title bar and no status bar. There are

starting a java application as a service
I have a single requirement to launch a java application on startup as a service. The application is shipped in a file called jes.jar. It requires three arguments: a dotted quad IP address, an initial service port, and a translated service port. I can get the application running as a console command. Can someone point me to a site that documents how to script a sys V init.d style script

gnome-desktop on Centos-6.3
I have installed a minimal kvm host system. I wish to provide a graphical login on the host. To this end I performed the following group installs: yum groupinstall "general purpose desktop" "x windows system" I can login on the host system as root and then run 'startx' which gives me a desktop, sort of. The top menu bar with the various tool sets is missing as is

Gnome desktop, workspaces and windows
I was editing a file in gvim when I inadvertently pressed some key combination that caused the vim window to disappear from the desktop. I looked in ps and found that it was still running. Checking the tool bar at the bottom of my display I noticed that a large rectangle now occupied the second of four boxes on the extreme right hand side. Clicking on that box brought back the gvim instance but

Need help with spec file for Apache-2.4.7
I am trying to build an RPM for Apache-2.4.7-1 on Centos-6.5-i86_64. I am using mock. The are three build dependencies that I am trying to resolve. One, mod_socache_dc / distcache, I have simply removed from the spec file. The other two are arp and apr-utils. Since httpd-2.4.7 needs arp >= 1.4 I got the two latter requirements from http://www.apache.org/dist/httpd/httpd-2.4.7-deps.tar.bz2

Gnome2 Desktop mute buttons for mic and video
CentOS-6.6 Does anyone know of an application that would provide a 'mute' buttons for video and audio that could be used from a desktop panel? Ideally this would show the status (muted/cloaked or open mic/recording) of each. Presently, turning audio and video pick-ups off and on is rather cumbersome. And I often forget what state I have left them in. Which occasionally makes for some

kernel Panic on desktop
I arrived at work this morning to find that my desktop unit (CentOS-6.6 KVM) halted with a kernel panic. I am not conversant with any way to save the console display in this case and there was rather a lot of text. I jotted down a few notes and power-cycled the unit to restart. which it did and I am using now to compose this message. The few notes that I manually copied, subject to

CentOS6 - Stop NUX Skype auto-start with gnome desktop
How does one configure Skype/Gnome such that one can have Skype installed but not auto-start when the Gnome desktop opens? I have looked in the 'System/Preferences/Startup Applications' menu but Skype is not listed there. There are no options in the Application itself that allow this setting either. If there no other way then I will remove the application package and re-install when I

Gnome Desktop Screensaver Security Lock Override?
We deployed our first CentOS-4 based workstation this past spring to see if we can conveniently replace all, or at least most, of our MS-Win based user systems with Linux boxes instead. Generally this trial unit has proved a success but there is one lingering problem that I cannot seem to find a straight-forward answer to: Is there an administrator override to a user's password protected

I have a recently (last Friday) updated CentOS 4.5 desktop running OOo 2.2 that, since this morning, displays OpenOffice .odt files as application:x-java-archives and has replaced the open office icon on my desktop with the java icon for these files. I have looked in both: /usr/share/mime-info/gnome-vfs.mime and /usr/share/mime-info/file-roller.mime And cannot see any reference to OpenOffice

Created a DVD from Gnome Desktop -CentOS-5.3
I am trying to put the dvd iso image of CentOS-5.4 onto a DVD. I have an LG multi-writer installed. I have used this device on this host to created CDs in the past but this is my first attempt at creating a dvd. When I put a blank DVD-R media in the drive then I see a desktop icon for "CD-ROM Disc" created. When I open the bittorent folder and click on the iso image
