CentOS, Firefox, and Java Plugin
The latest updates to CentOS 5.5 seem to have broken the Java plugin, and have defeated any and all attempts to get it working again. I'm running CentOS 5.5 (32-bit) and Firefox 3.6.9 (installed from the CentOS repository); I've tried BOTH the openJDK plugin available through the Argeo repositories, and installing Java 1.6.0 directly from Sun/Oracle and creating the plugin soft link in

Java RE
Hello. Package Manager reports (with a green checkmark) that I have java-1.6.0 installed on my machine (running Cent 5.3), but it seems to not be running. I used http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml and got "Something is wrong. Java is not working." Perhaps I'm confused on which program I need to use java-coded apps. PM lists this app as "OpenJDK Runtime

CentOS/RHEL's build of firefox hardwired to evolution -- how to change this
For some awful reason (can someone explain why?), the RHEL/CentOS build of firefox is hardwired to use evolution as its mailto client. With FF 2.<mumble> this was fixable with an about:config setting. With 3.0.<mumble>, it seems not. What is the proper way of fixing this? *I* ended up doing a 'sudo rpm -e evolution' and then doing a 'sudo ln -s

stock openjdk vs. epel
If you have the epel repo installed and enabled during a yum update, you get java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-1.0.b12.el5.2 instead of the stock .b09 version. Is this intentional and desirable? I thought epel generally did not replace stock components with newer versions. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

tomcat errors starting after upgrade from cent5.3 to 5.5 (/rebuild-jar-repository: error: Could not find)
We just upgraded Cent from 5.3 to 5.5 on a bunch of servers with little to no issues (kudos to you guys) except on a few servers where it appears we are having a problem w/ the Tomcat upgrade. Previously our application server was working fine under 5.3 with Tomcat/Java installed as such: java-1.4.2-gcj-compat-1.4.2.0-40jpp.115 java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-0.30.b09.el5

Moving LVM from one machine to another
My CentOS4 machine died (CPU cooler failure, causing CPU to die). In this machine I had 5 Tbyte disks in a RAID5, and LVM structures on that. Now I've moved those 5 disks onto a CentOS5 machine and the RAID array is being rebuilt. However the LVM structures weren't detected at boot time. I was able to "vgscan" and 'vgchange -a y' to bring the volume online and then

rpm question
When I install some RPMS like openoffice 3 on centos x85_64 is there some command that will leave all the actual files alone (leave them installed) but just remove the RPM name from the RPM database so centos now things the packages are not installed? Reason is I was wanting to do this so a next yum update does not get all confused... and the yum update happens just like I never installed

Hardware RAID 10 server - reformat NTFS partition to ext3 and resize for Centos 5.5
Here's the situation. I have a dual boot machine - originally had Red Hat and Windows 2000 Pro. The NTFS partition never did seem to 'get along' with the Adaptec 2400A caching RAID controller. Linux always seemed to like the I2O drivers. I went from RH Enterprise to now running Centos 5.5. Works great! I really don't want the 200 gigs worth of NTFS. Can't I just run

Booting from a USB hard drive?
I'm trying to learn Asterisk (specifically Trixbox) and, as you probably know, it runs on CentOS. I want to run it on my laptop and thought that I could install it to an external USB hard drive, like I've done with Fedora 12 and Linux Mint 8 (I like to keep my small CentOS/Windows dual booting hard drive in the laptop's hard drive slot). But it won't work. It kept giving me hard

can't update CENTOS - mirrore issue? or what?
For about a week a biug stack of updates have been pending for CENTOS but I can't install them. The yum update command leads to dependency resolution in the usual way but it always ends in this: ---> Package poppler-utils.i386 0:0.5.4-4.4.el5_4.11 set to be updated ---> Package xorg-x11-drv-qxl.i386 0:0.0.12-1.2.el5 set to be updated --> Running transaction check -->

Updating kernel driver module questions
I am running CentOS 4.7, presently on an older box (PIII slot 1 processor @ 500mhz with 384meg of RAM, using SCSI disks with an AHA-2940 host controller). I have built a new box: AMH Semporon 2.<mumble> GHZ, 2gig of RAM. I put in a AHA-29160 host controller (uses same driver as the AHA-2940). The motherboard is an ASROCK thing with nVideo's chipset: nv's SATA controller and

Need Java plugin for Firefox in CentOS 5.3
Somewhere during the course of recent updates I've lost the Java plugin for Firefox. Not sure when it happened, but I know Java was working in Firefox earlier this year. Firefox comes up empty when searching for a suitable plugin. I'm running a fully updated CentOS 5.3 with the following packages installed: firefox-3.0.12-1.el5.centos.i386.rpm

upgrading 32-bit installation to 64-bit
Hi! I've got a 32-bit Centos installed on an AMD Phenom II X2 processor and I'm interested ni making it 64 bit instead. But I'd sure like to avoid having to go back thru the whole installation again... in part because I've got sotware RAID set up and I'm assuming that I can't do a fresh install into it without having to re-configure the whole thing. So, is it possible

lvm and /dev/cdrom: open failed: No medium found
Hi, every lvm command gives one line with: /dev/cdrom: open failed: No medium found I looked at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=431901 and changed filter in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf to filter = [ "r|/dev/cdrom|", "a/.*/" ] then deleted cache /etc/lvm/cache/.cache This seems to help, but after a while the message reappears. Is there a way to get rid of it, because

java annoyances
Fresh install on a brand new box (Dell Precision 3500) of 5.6. I install Sun java-1.6.0_26-b03, Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode) Then ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-sun-1.6.0.26.x86_64/jre/lib/amd64/libnpjp2.so /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins about:plugins shows java enabled (oddly enough, I seem to have flash, 32-bit, in the 32 bit libs, and that doesn't show; guess
