Problem with PXEBOOT of diskless client -- fails to mount RAMDISK
I am having a problem with setting up diskless clients under CentOS 5.2. I have everything working under CentOS 4.7. This is an adaptation of the (somewhat old) Diskless Linux with PXE HOWTO by Gerd v. Egidy, originally at the URL http://www.intra2net.com/opensource/diskless-howto/, which is now defunt (there is a mirror of it at http://blog.chinaunix.net/u/2389/showart_82438.html). What I am

Lilo for CentOS 5?
Does there exist a version of Lilo built for x86_64 CentOS 5? It does not seem to be on the DVD. *I* really, really, prefer Lilo over Grub. -- Robert Heller -- 978-544-6933 Deepwoods Software -- Download the Model Railroad System http://www.deepsoft.com/ -- Binaries for Linux and MS-Windows heller at deepsoft.com -- http://www.deepsoft.com/ModelRailroadSystem/

Seamonkey (Mozilla) web browser for CentOS 5.4?
Does the Seamonkey (Mozilla) web browser exist for CentOS 5.4? Hibernating a laptop with the power button (Thinkpax X31) under CentOS 5.4
I am having a weird problem trying to get hibernation to work when I press the power button on my Thinkpad X31 under CentOS 5.4. I've modified /etc/acpi/events/power.conf to contain: # ACPID config to power down machine if powerbutton is pressed, but only if # no gnome-power-manager is running event=button/power.* action=/bin/ps awwux | /bin/grep gnome-power-manager | /bin/grep -qv grep ||

Question about the ahci kernel module: missing in the CentOS (4) Plus kernel
Is there some reason the ahci kernel module is *missing* from the 2.6.9-89.0.16.plus.c4 kernel? It is in the standard 2.6.9-89.0.16.EL kernel. Is this due to an oversight or is there some sort of conflict? I wanted to add IEEE1394 support to my system running CentOS 4.8. I *looks* like what I need to do is download the kernel SRPM and patch the config to include the IEEE1394 modules and

CentOS/RHEL's build of firefox hardwired to evolution -- how to change this
For some awful reason (can someone explain why?), the RHEL/CentOS build of firefox is hardwired to use evolution as its mailto client. With FF 2.<mumble> this was fixable with an about:config setting. With 3.0.<mumble>, it seems not. What is the proper way of fixing this? *I* ended up doing a 'sudo rpm -e evolution' and then doing a 'sudo ln -s

Quick question: CentOSPlus kernel vs. base kernel.
What does the CentOSPlus kernel have that the standard kernel does not? It is just additional drivers and modules? Or are there additional differences? -- Robert Heller -- 978-544-6933 Deepwoods Software -- Download the Model Railroad System http://www.deepsoft.com/ -- Binaries for Linux and MS-Windows heller at deepsoft.com --

Samba & (anonymous) LDAP Authentication
I am trying to things up to allow a *few* select users on a small number of MS-Windows boxes to write to a couple of directories on a Linux server. Most of the users on the MS-Windows boxes will only have anonymous (guest) read-only access to one directory and anonymous (guest) access to the printers. The Linux server primarily is a PXEBoot and NFS server for a group of diskless Linux

CentOS 5.4 64-bit: Java web browser plugin for 64-bit FireFox?
Does there exist *anywhere* a Java web browser plugin for 64-bit FireFox? The SUN 1.6<mumble> JDK (jdk-6u18-linux-amd64.rpm) does NOT include the Java web browser plugin library. java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-1.2.b09.el5.x86_64.rpm does not have one either. Should I install the *32-bit* SUN 1.6<mumble> JDK and use the 32-64 bit wrapper? I've searched the web and read the wiki

For some unfathomable reason, named 'wedges' -- becomes unresponsive and needs to be killed (with -9!) and restarted. GUI Front End for OpenLDAP admin (users & groups)
Does there exist a GUI Front End for OpenLDAP admin for CentOS 5 (RHEL 5)? The binary (i386) rpm for directory_adminstrator works just fine with CentOS 4, but does't install under CentOS 5 and the src RPM does not build (I hacked the spec file and did install the build deps, but it is using an old hack for finding libgnome (/usr/lib/gnomeConf.sh or something like that). postgresql-tcl-8.1.15-1.el4s1.1 in CentOSPlus (4) -- build error
Whoever is building this RPM needs to check his/her build logs. The pkgIndex.tcl in /usr/lib/Pgtcl is not being built properly! The pkg_mkIndex procedure does not always throw an obvious error -- sometimes it just does not create the 'package ifneeded ...' line(s), and just quietly skips a package. Something is broken in the build process. Both the version above (which I just

Printing problems with Firefox
I have been having problems printing web pages with Firefox under CentOS 4.8: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.14) Gecko/2009091009 CentOS/3.0.14-1.el4.centos Firefox/3.0.14 What happens is that some of the text is 'scrambled' (looks like somehow something is messed up with the font encoding of whatever font is being used). Updating kernel driver module questions
I am running CentOS 4.7, presently on an older box (PIII slot 1 processor @ 500mhz with 384meg of RAM, using SCSI disks with an AHA-2940 host controller). I have built a new box: AMH Semporon 2.<mumble> GHZ, 2gig of RAM. I put in a AHA-29160 host controller (uses same driver as the AHA-2940). The motherboard is an ASROCK thing with nVideo's chipset: nv's SATA controller and

Creating an alternitive install CD for CentOS 5.2 (w/ patched mkinitrd)
I need to be able to install CentOS 5.2 on a machine with software RAID (and LVM) setup. I discovered (the hard way!) that there is a bug in the mkinitrd package that causes it to enter an endless loop when there are /dev/mapper/ devices present during the install process. There is a patch to mkinitrd, which I applied and created a new rpm for mkinitrd with this patch applied. I'd like to

I have been *manually* dealing with my wired and wireless network interfaces on my laptop. Serial port fun: CentOS 4.8 (32-bit) vs. CentOS 5.4 (64-bit)
I am in the process of migrating from running CentOS 4.8 (32-bit) to CentOS 5.4 (64-bit) on my AMD Sempron(tm) Processor LE-1300 system (it is running CentOS 4.8 32-bit because the disk images are from a previous PIII system), and things are 'interesting' WRT how the Lava Computer mfg Inc Quattro-PCI card is being handled. lspci (on CentOS 4.8 32-bit) yields: 01:0a.0 Serial controller:

xulrunner 1.9.0.19-1: Does it exist or what?
According to 'yum info xulrunner' version 1.9.0.19, release 1.el5_5 exists and is an available package. But when I try to update it, yum claims there is nothing to do and when I try a general update, yum complains that it cannot update firefox because it cannot find xulrunner >= 1.9.0.19-1. What is going on here? I am doing this on a desktop x86_64 system that I recently brought up
