connection refused resolving - after 5.4 upgrade
Hi all,
prior to 5.4 upgrade, my two DNS servers would only get
'connection refused resolving .....'
on rare infrequent occasions (once or twice a month)
after upgrade to 5.4 I get 500+ per day.
Google has suggestions for

Anyone else noticed this?

Flash problems in newest upgrade?
Hi, I just upgraded to the newest kernel and Flash. Hulu now "grays
out" when I try to go to full screen. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the proprietary video drivers (no difference either way),
so I'm guessing it has something to do with either the new Flash or
the new kernel. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
Thanks for any pointers.

Hi,
I am running a VOIP application on Centos 5.3. It is a 16 core box
with 12 G of mem and all what it does is passing packets.
What happens is that at around 2K channels running g711 ( 64k) codec,
all eth0 is used up and no more traffic can go through.
I have checked google and it talked about interrupt scheduler.
does anyone know how to configure the kernel to allow it to use all

statd random port - sysconfig/nfs not taking effect
I have changed /etc/sysconfig/nfs to specify port numbers for NFS
daemons. Somehow statd is still starting up at random port number.
Other damons are starting at properly at specified port numbers Any
clues on what might be wrong? Any other location/setting that takes
precedence over sysconfig/nfs ? It's CentOS 5.5 64bit with nfs-utils
1.0.9-44.el5.

Mirror After?
Hi All,
If I put a 1TB HD in my server (because they are on sale this week),
can I later Mirror to a second 1TB drive without destroying the data
on the first?
On Windows and OS X, I know I can't do this...
Thoughts?

Device enumeration during kickstart
By default, a kickstart installation will spread the configured partitions
over all disks that are found, and the only way around that is to use
--ondisk or ignoredisk. But I was wondering how reliable this method is.
E.g. if there are four SATA ports on the system board, can I blindly
assume that port one will always correspond to sda, port two to sdb,
and so on? Can I assume that a second

contradictory netfilter default policy
I'm curious why CentOS contradicts its own (or, actually RH's) netfilter
default policy.
On http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Network/IPTables , at the end of
section 1, it's stated that (generally) the default policy for INPUT is
to DROP. So, why is it set to ACCEPT?
Btw, Fedora is also this way.

problem with udev when booting kernel 5.3 release 128.4.1
Hi List,
I am running a 64 bit 5.3 kernel on an intel mb and all has been well.
Today I thought it would be okay to reboot so that the latest kernel was
running - i.e move from 128.2.1 to 128.4.1 release.
The system passes POST fine, grub passes control to the 128.4.1 kernel
and the boot process is under way.
after some 30 secs the system starts beeping - continuously.

centos 5.4, firefox and adobereader plugin, disabled input fields
Hello,
we are using firefox-3.0.15 from the CentOS-Repository and the
adobereader plugin from the adobe-repository. We have a curious problem
with adobereader-plugin in firefox.
When a pdf document is displayed via the plugin, i.e. within a tab in
firefox, all input fields are disabled. I cannot enter a search string
or fill in fields. The cursor and page up/down keys are also disabled.
But when

Upgrading CentOS 5.3 from local mirror
Good afternoon folks.
Earlier today, I started upgrading a few of our servers to 5.4 based
on input from the list. So far, all has gone well. I have about 6
servers (not very many, but still) that need to be upgraded. Instead
of taking precious bits from the mirrors for each upgrade, I was
curious if I could rsync the 5.4 directory from a local mirror, and
configure yum to use that repo, if

perl woes - perl-file-Temp conflict
Hi all, everytime I play with perl I end up falling on my face.
Yesterday, new perl modules available from rf (my chosen repo for perl,
perl is excluded from my CentOS-Base), however it did not like an
already installed perl-File-Temp, so not recalling it was necessary for
my mail system I removed it and allowed the updates.
Then when I discovered my mail system no longer working (amavisd

AIDE or OSSEC on CentOS 5.4 x86_64?
Starting with a fresh load and after I finish hardening the load
following the Center for Internet Security (CIS) guidance, I'm wondering
whether AIDE or OSSEC would be a better intrusion detection system.
I installed AIDE and did a quick test of AIDE and after initializing the
db and applying the recent cups update, I found that 1700+ files had
changed. Those are a lot of changes to wade

flash-plugin-9.0.124.0-1 having problems since firefox-3.0.7-3.el4.centos
Updated yesterday to the latest firefox from CentOS, and now RPMforge
flash-plugin will only play a few seconds of video (such as CNN,
iReport, etc.) at a time before becoming stuck; dragging the slider
back a little allows it to play a bit further, but then it stops
again. YouTube plays the video without sticking, but has no sound.
glibc issues on el4 prevent upgrading to the newer flash-plugin

3Ware 9650SE tuning advice
Hello fellow sysadmins!
I've assembled a whitebox system with a SuperMicro motherboard, case,
8GB of memory and a single quad core Xeon processor.
I have two 9650SE-8LPML cards (8 ports each) in each server with 12 1TB
SATA drives total. Three drives per "lane" on each card.
CentOS 5.2 x86_64.
I'm looking for advice on tuning this thing for performance.

Call for Firefox 3.6.1 and Thunderbird 3.0.1 testers
Hi,
I have made complete rebuild and backport of Firefox 3.6.1 and
Thunderbird 3.0.1 to CentOS 5. Packages come with language packs,
debuginfo packages, xulrunner etc. I'm looking for QA testers. Upgrade
from distro versions works pretty fine.
Thanks,
David Hrb??
