concat mount
Hi, I've got a buffalo 1TB DriveStation run in RAID 1 mode, i.e. 500G space available, but that beast is preformatted in vfat. Buffalo doesn't recommend to run it as ext2/ext3, so I mount a vfat drive wich has the limitations "no symlinks, no uids, no gids, etc.". As I just want to use the DriveStation as a backup target, I did the following: I created files of 4G size with

cxterm buffer overrun
cxterm is a Chinese terminal emulator for the X Window System. It''s installed as suid-root by default if you did a make install. Just like xterm, it does needs to be suid to update /etc/utmp...blahblah... I discovered some buffer overflow bugs in it. The code attached below is the exploit. Quick fix? chmod -s /path/cxterm

AD group membership limits?
Hi, I'm running Samba 3.0.11 on RedHat ES 3 kernel version 2.4.21-15.0.4.ELsmp and have a quick question about AD group membership limits Am I right in assuming that Samba is limited by the group membership parameters (ie NGROUP = 32) imposed by the Linux kernel? Is there any workaround in Samba for this? At the moment if a user is a member of more then 32 domain groups they cannot access

Suggestion.
Hi, I''m new to the list. I intend to learn about some Linux Networking features to help myself and others. I''m looking to control the bandwidth in my office. Basically there are like 20 computers, a 2MB Adsl Line. And I would love to let them only use a certain amount of bandwidth. For example let every client use 20KB of internet bandwidth of the 210KB we can download

Huge system load using HTB
Hi! I have some problems with htb performance. THE SETUP: I have a network with 3 ISP uplinks and 1 local network uplink. There are about 1700 clients. I was shaping their bandwidth with HTB using iptables mangling in a manner: tc class add dev $DEV parent 1:10 classid 1:${CLASS_ID} htb rate \ 16kbit ceil 512kbit burst 2kb prio 2 quantum 1500 tc qdisc add dev $DEV parent 1:${CLASS_ID}

Resetting traffic history
I''m a tc newbie, and I think I am close to being able to use it to control one of the virtual web sites on our Gentoo Linux server. The site has it''s own IP address. I have a bit of a problem in that the way I originally configured tc, the busy site grabbed all the bandwidth, leaving none for the other (and more important) sites. Here is how I had configured it: tc

deleting (empty) directories
I am evaluating rsync for the mirroring of a website and associated database. To exercise it and establish the correct run string I need I am running tests LOCALLY between two test directories. I have a /scratch/temp/Departure and a /scratch/temp/Arrival trees. I apply changes to the Departure tree, run rsync, and do a diff -r. Now I delete a file in Departure rm Departure/Quattro/uno.file

reading quattro pro spreadsheet .qpw into R
I have many quattro pro spreadsheets and no quattro pro. Is there a way to access the data using R, or any other solution that anyone can think of? thanks, -- Stephen Sefick Let's not spend our time and resources thinking about things that are so little or so large that all they really do for us is puff us up and make us feel like gods. smbd processes 99% cpu and end-user locks up
Still having a situation, in particular with Microsoft Office products (Excel, MS Word, etc), wherein a user locks up while saving a file. The scenario goes as follows: user opens up a file (excel document, word document, etc), user changes file, user hits save, user hangs... `top` reports an smbd belonging to user locked in some sort of loop causing 99% cpu utilization. net status sessions

Clamav
Folks, I just yum'd clamav last night for my mailserver. There do not appear to be any man pages for this package. Is there just web documents on what to do to create the configuration file, or is that already done, and I haven't found it yet? Thanks.. sam

Serial port fun: CentOS 4.8 (32-bit) vs. CentOS 5.4 (64-bit)
I am in the process of migrating from running CentOS 4.8 (32-bit) to CentOS 5.4 (64-bit) on my AMD Sempron(tm) Processor LE-1300 system (it is running CentOS 4.8 32-bit because the disk images are from a previous PIII system), and things are 'interesting' WRT how the Lava Computer mfg Inc Quattro-PCI card is being handled. lspci (on CentOS 4.8 32-bit) yields: 01:0a.0 Serial controller:

AD Issues with Centos 4
I have the latest Centos (4.1), all YUM'd up to date. I've been through the How-TO's on Samba's site as well as 4 million other sites and still can't get proper AD (Active Directory) Authentication to work. It looks like it's working, appears in the domain server list and pulls users and groups. If I do a klist -u, I see all the users with domain+username correctly.

Good news Ubuntu`s update fixed problems in CoreDRAW 9
Its February 6, 2012. I just downloaded all the updates to Ubuntu 11.10 64bit. I think the updates just came out today. It was a bigger package of updates than the others I have installed in the past. I do not know what they did but whatever it was, it fixed most of the problems in CorelDRAW 9. I gave it a rating of bronze, and that was being generous, just a few days ago. It seems as thou

Sendmail: timeout waiting for input from local during Draining Input
Hi folks, I've recently replaced a RedHat EL 3.x system with a CentOS 5 system (fully yum'd as of Tuesday). This was a full-pave install, although we did copy the sendmail.mc from the original system. Now I get a lot of this in my logs: Dec 7 11:47:38 mail sendmail[20117]: lB7Gl6w0020116: timeout waiting for input from local during Draining Input The only thing even remotely

again on file corruption
Hi, I've posted the same problem several months ago, You can find my post there: http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/2006-March/119244.html I summed up all the whole thing: I run a samba server based on slackware 10.2, using samba 3.0.20 with two clients: a windows 98 box and a windows 2000 box. I've got a share between the two system which hosts an old spreadsheet program (quattro pro)

Offline Folders
We have just recently started using Windows XP Offline Folders here, and it is causing all sorts of festive problems. If a folder is set for offline use on a client, whether that folder is on our samba server or not, the samba server becomes unavailable or only very slightly available at best. Example: Explorer - Windows 2003 Server, Quattro - samba 3.0.22 server on Solaris 9

Very large (~1.12 TB) filesystems and wasted space.
Hello, I'm not much of a pro when it comes to managing large filesystems in Linux, and I'm not sure if this is entirely on topic, but I felt that you folks would know best. I have a 3Ware 7810 card with 8 160 GB drives attached to it set up as a large RAID5. I fdisked out one large partition and simply mkfsed the drive with that ext3 filesystem, no other tweaking. I'm accessing

Patch proposition to implement a new workaround: tb-lsub-flags
Hi again Timo, As agreed earlier tonight, you'll find as attachments 4 diffs (diff -u) implementing the new workaround "tb-lsub-flags". The 4 impacted files are: ./src/imap/imap-settings.h ./src/imap/imap-settings.c ./src/imap/cmd-list.c ./src/config/all-settings.c Here is the proposed description for the dovecot.conf file: # tb-lsub-flags: # Usually IMAP servers don't
