nfsv4 and kerberos - fails to mount
I have been trying all sorts of things to get this working.
nfsv4 works fine if I just use the nfs-v3 form of export
i.e.
/nfs4exports
192.168.230.237/24(ro,fsid=0,sync,insecure,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check,squash_uids=0-99)
/nfs4exports/NDG
192.168.230.237/24(rw,insecure,no_subtree_check,nohide,sync,no_root_squash,squash_uids=0-99)
but this is inherently open to all on this machine.
so then

Firefox seg faults
Hi, I have two very similar AMD based work stations running fully
current CentOS x86_64.
Both have 4Gb of RAM, both have

5.4 kernel versions?
Please excuse a possibly dumb question.
Prior to the release of CentOS 5.4 I believe two updated 5.4 kernels
were released as part of 5.3
2.6.18-164.el5 and 2.6.18-164.2.1.el5
Now that 5.4 is released we have just the 2.6.18-164.el5 kernel.
Now the dumb question - what happened to the updated kernel?
I now have workstations running 5.4 with the 164.2.1.el5 as they get yum
update run regularly,

nfs (v3?) fails to allow writes and permission changes
Hi All,
I have an nfs mount from my CentOS 5.3 client to a CentOS5.3 server.
This has been functioning correctly for some years.
Beginning last week I had problems saving OpenOffice documents onto the
nfs mounted volume.
OpenOffice just times out with a file io error.
So I tried just a simple shell - cd to the mounted volume did a vi
create of text file - no problems.
tried a chmod +w on an

javaWS under firefox on CentOS 5.6 fails to launch sound
Hi List,
Before I spend hours chasing this - my initial google search seems to
indicate that javaWS and JNLP apps with sound do not work on CentOS
systems. The developer's website says they support :-
*Linux*
*Supported OS?s and recommended versions of Java*
    * Linux
          o openSUSE 11 (64 bit with 64 bit JVM)
          o Ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit with 64 bit JVM)

mail problems after setting up lynx for https with c_rehash
Hi List,
I am not sure it's related but after I ran c_rehash over my ssl
certificate directory I am having email delay problems.
1. my thunderbird client now regularly times out and tells me the smtp
server is not available - a retry always works - this never occurred before.
I do use TLS for the smtp server on port 25 for my connection.
2. another mail server that regularly sends me mail

Logwatch / spamassassin
Hi all,
Well it took a while for me to figure it out, but apparently my logwatch no
longer can be mailed locally on my computer as I believe spamassassin is
eating it.
I can send it out to an email address outside my server though. So
spamassassin is only checking incoming I guess.
My question is....how do I...or should I.... Make all local mail go straight
to the boxes and skip spamasassin

miro from rpmforge appears to have dep solving issues
Hi folks,
Anyone know the whereabouts of libgtkembedmoz.so()(64bit) as it is
needed by miro-1.0-1.el5.rf.x86_64 (rpmforge)
I tried a whatprovides and have looked at epel as well as rpmforge - no
luck.
While I'm asking, I'm looking for an internet HD TV viewer - miro looked
interesting - any other products you know of?
TIA

latest kernel - version question
Hi List,
just doing my weekly yum update and noticed that the kernel is
designated .i686 but the headers package is .i386??
surely the headers should match the kernel geometry that it was compiled
for?
confused.
TIA

log time formats - where is this defined
One of my servers is using ISO datetime formats
(2011-02-27T15:22:15.519857-05:00) in the logs
the rest use the default redhat/CentOS format (Feb 27 15:10:21).
After a couple of hours searching google I cannot find where this is
defined.
I know I changed it some months ago as an experiment but forgotten where
this was done.
the ISO format breaks logwatch - thus I need to revert.
TIA

problem with udev when booting kernel 5.3 release 128.4.1
Hi List,
I am running a 64 bit 5.3 kernel on an intel mb and all has been well.
Today I thought it would be okay to reboot so that the latest kernel was
running - i.e move from 128.2.1 to 128.4.1 release.
The system passes POST fine, grub passes control to the 128.4.1 kernel
and the boot process is under way.
after some 30 secs the system starts beeping - continuously.
After I hooked up a

default gw route has gone?
Weird behaviour.
A couple of days ago I installed another DSL router.
During the process I have somehow caused the default gw route to
disappear - on system start up the interface comes up fine, I can see
and connect to the local subnet but not to the internet.

perl woes - perl-file-Temp conflict
Hi all, everytime I play with perl I end up falling on my face.
Yesterday, new perl modules available from rf (my chosen repo for perl,
perl is excluded from my CentOS-Base), however it did not like an
already installed perl-File-Temp, so not recalling it was necessary for
my mail system I removed it and allowed the updates.
Then when I discovered my mail system no longer working (amavisd

SQL Server 2005 and CentOS?
One of my clients use a software product that is "upgrading" and will
shortly utilize micro$oft SQL server 2005.
Currently the clients are XP on older machines with the database
residing on a Samba / CentOS server and this works very well.
Question: Does anyone run SQL server from XP in a virtualbox on CentOS?
Any other configuration that works on a linux server?
I do not want to have

dnsmasq - where to use? where not?
Hi list,
On updating my server today, I noted that dnsmasq was updated, I do not
recall installing this onto my server as it is running bind/named and
dhcpd, thus why does it need dnsmasq?
So I did a
$> sudo yum remove dnsmasq
to find out what rpm / yum thinks about it - I get a list of
NetworkManager(-glib) removals
evolution(-connector) removals
krb5-auth-dialog also......
I think I can

Clamav question after upgrade to 5.3 and 0.95
Hi list,
I have installed ClamAV from rpmforge and followed the excellent CentOS
how to on installing amavisd - all has appeared to just work as
advertised - thanks to all those involved in getting these instructions
together.
Come time to upgrade to 5.3 and ClamAV 0.95 (logwatch has been
encouraging me to do the ClamAV upgrade for a week or two)
All appeared to work fine.
However I now notice
