Wierd Networking Problem
Hi Guys,
I'm 100% sure this is not a Linux issue but I want a second opinion...
I have a Linux server running CentOS. It was been absolutely perfect
without any errors or problems.
Since Monday it has been unable to send email. It is configured to act as
a smart host. All email gets forwarded to smtp.isp.net.
The server is on a network behind a firewall completely nat'd. No ports

VPN Server Recomendations
Hi Guys,
I'm looking for a VPN solution that will run on CentOS. I've used PopTop
with success but some clients have problems at hotels and other firewalled
locations.
If anyone can suggest something that works well with MS 2000/XP, doesn't
require too much tweaking on the client side and is fairly resiliant to
various firewall blocking, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

Internet Load Balancing and Failover
Hi All,
Does anyone have any experience connecting two or more DSL/Cable modems to
a Linux box to provide load balancing and failover?
I've done some googling and found a few resources but very few solid
experiences.
I'm trying to optimize my LAN->Internet traffic for a bunch of
workstations.

Looking for Insights
Hi Guys,
I had a strange problem yesterday and I'm curious as to what everyone
thinks.
I have a client with a Red Hat Enterprise 2.1 cluster. All quality HP
equipment with an MSA 500 storage array acting as the shared storage
between the two nodes in the cluster.
This cluster is configured for reliability and not load balancing. All
work is handled by one node or the other not both.

OpenVPN throughput
Hello listmates,
We are working on setting up two private networks linked by a public
network which is fast (1 Gbit/s) but potentially insecure. Since the
hosts on our two networks need to talk to each other, and do so
securely, we have decided to use OpenVPN to connect them, making one
gateway a server and the other a client. The connectivity part was
easy to establish and worked like a charm.

Samba, AD and non AD Machines
Hi All,
I have configured Samba 3.0.23 to work with Active Directory. Based on
all the tests shown here:
http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/unixclients.html#adssdm
Things are working as expected.
Most machines and users are working as expected.
I do have some Windows machines on another subnet, NOT joined to the
domain that are giving me grief. Going to

Problems with 2.3TB disk
Hi Guys,
I have a server running CentOS 4.2 with a 2.6.9-22EL-smp kernel.
The system contains a 2.3 TB RAID 5 array. There is a 20GB root partition
with the remainder of the drive configured one large LVM volume. (/u0)
I have installed Veritas Netbackup on the server and am running a few
tests. Small backups and restores work just fine.
When I run a larger backup (500MB) and store the

Cisco 79xx series IP phones
Shawn,
That's a complete load of manure. I have an office full of 7960's, they
work great with asterisk with the SIP images loaded. I'm about to pick
up a lot of 7912's (simple one line phones, same as the 7905 but it has
a built in switch). These phones have also been confirmed to work with
Asterisk.
I would recommend not going directly to cisco, and just find a reseller

ACL Support and Samba
I've been playing with filesystem ACLs and wanted to integrate that with
Samba to create a more transparent end user experiance.
I have set up and tested a JFS partition with ACL support. I can use
getfacl and setfacl with no problems to set permissions as needed. It
works great.
I compiled Samba with ACL support using the --with-acl configure option.
Unfortunately I can't seem to

Modem network card conflict
Hi All,
Here's a strange one for you...
I have a Linux box with a PCMCIA adapter PCI card in it. Plugged into said
card is a cellular modem card.
I can configure wvdial and dial the modem card perfectly. My ppp0
interface comes up and I can ping everything.
I also have a network card on the motherboard. Once again, by itself the
network card works correctly. That is with the modem

unison versus rsync
Anyone got any actual comparisons between unison and rsync specifically related
to the performance of synchronization of large data sets over slow links?
I have a huge tree to start replication of Friday and know that if I sync the root
paths it will take ages and with the lack of any overall state of progress this won't
be optimal as its likely to fail for whatever reason before it can

Old, slow firewall users please speak up!
Ok, I''ve flogged this issue probably longer than some of you can stand
by now. (remember, I''m the nut trying to use a PPro200 to support ~500
users on a 10Mb internet link :o)
To appease those who think I''m nuts, I am ordering a new firewall
shortly to allow for future growth. (probably a Dell PE750 with P4/2.8
and dual GE nics.)
However, since I have yet to prove

Accessing a Samba server over the Internet
Hi,
I want to connect to Samba volumes on a SCO Open Server 5 over the Internet
from my NT 4 workstation. My workstation is in a local domain and gets a
dynamic IP address when it connects to my ISP; the Internet hostname is also
dynamic and can't be predicted.
I can determine my ISP's B class subnet which I have put into the smb.conf
file in the 'hosts allow' entry.
However,

multiple select_tag
Hello again,
I have a table called line_items, with the following fields:
id int
item_name varchar()
qty int
conditions text
I''ve made my LineItem model, and everything works as such (with simple
text_fields)..
Now I''d like for the conditions field to be a select_tag() with multiple
choice possibility.
I''m guessing I need some code to expand/restract the array for

Semi-OT: An idea for New Orleanstemporarycommunications infrastructure
Great idea Dean,
"I would also suggest that maybe instead of looking to set up within the
disaster zones that you consider setting up in the relocation zone (eg
where people are being sent to) yes they have payphones there but having
a bank of 20 grandstream phones connected a T1 is a far smarter and more
effective solution and probably more meaningful."

Ways to get around DNS names in rules
I''m re-reading the section on dns names in the shorewall docs:
"I personally recommend strongly against using DNS names in
Shorewall configuration files. If you use DNS names and you
are called out of bed at 2:00AM because Shorewall won''t start
as a result of DNS problems then don''t say that you were not
forewarned."
Having been stung by this a few times
