RAIDs and JBOD?
Hey Guys, I have some questions?regarding?a new home server I am going to build in the hopefully very near future (ASAP, I just need to finish planning everything and this is the penultimate?hurdle), I will be creating a software RAID... Lets say I have three drives "knocking" around which are all 1TB SATA II drives but each made by a different manufacturer. I am going to guess that

Unable to share directory via Samba?
So I went to System > Administration > Server Settings > Samba and added a folder to share and initially set it to guest access to get things going. I couldn't access this one and only share on this server with guest access from either my Windows laptop (XP Pro SP3) or a Leopard server (10.5.8) so I changed the settings to use user authentication and added my local user details

mdadm help
Hey List, So I had a 4 drive software RAID 5 set up consisting of /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdc1, /dev/sdd1 and /dev/sde1. I reinstalled my OS and after the reinstall I made the mistake of re-assembling the array incorrectly by typing "sudo mdadm --assemble /dev/md0 /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd /dev/sde" in a moment of stupidity. Obviously this didn't work and the array wouldn't mount and

First Time Setting up RAID
Arch = x86_64 CentOS-6.4 We have a cold server with 32Gb RAM and 8 x 3TB SATA drives mounted in hotswap cells. The intended purpose of this system is as an ERP application and DBMS host. The ERP application will likely eventually have web access but at the moment only dedicated client applications can connect to it. I am researching how to best set this system up for use as a production host

stripe alignment consideration for btrfs on RAID5
Hiya, is there any recommendation out there to setup a btrfs FS on top of hardware or software raid5 or raid6 wrt stripe/stride alignment? From mkfs.btrfs, it doesn''t look like there''s much that can be adjusted that would help, and what I''m asking might not even make sense for btrfs but I thought I''d just ask. Thanks, Stephane -- To unsubscribe from this

Lost transaction log file in alpha2
I had run alpha1 pretty uneventfully for several weeks. I upgraded to alpha2 a couple of days ago and have since suffered two incidents of "Lost transaction log", resulting in the client being unable to access the mailbox until I "rm dovecot.index.log*" Sep 14 10:48:35 caddy dovecot: imap(jberry): Lost transaction log file /Users/jberry/Maildir/dovecot.index.log seq 1

[OT] Leveno HDD caddies
This is very off topic but, I have no idea where else to ask. We obtained some used Leveno CTO7483 desktop units for experimentation. I had intended to install CentOS-7 on one of them. As they arrived with a vendor upgraded Windows 7ProSP1 install without media I decided to pull the disk drive and install onto a spare drive that I installed. Those of you with any experience with this model

A probably silly thought but...
Not a silly thought. I've instead of spending x hunderd thousand on brandname ibm servers and sans, how you could create a RAID array of PCs running IDE hard drives. If a PC dies just plug in some more and rebuild. If you want to add more space just add more PCs. :) that would be cool. Obviously you wouldn't use it still for critical data like databases etc, but our user

Do software raids don't dance Samba?
Hey all, well, first of all (even if it's quite late as it's in version 3.0.7 already): thanks a lot to all who are developing and supporting Samba! I'm new to Linux and I really like the way things are happening on this OS. But now, I've reached a point where I have to raise the white flag... It seems to me like - at least my - software raid can't dance Samba. I've got

Error in rename uidlist while fetching through pop3
My dovecot server seems to randomly begin giving errors to pop3 users who try to fetch their email. Once this begins, they see no more new mail, though the mail is in cur. Hardisk cloning for centos-5.3
Hi, I want to clone my hardisk containing the centos-5.3 OS and its swap region on to new raw hardisk via network either through ssh, tftp or ftp. How do i do that ? Is there any Tool for that or will DD command be sufficient.I know that dd command will have to be used on hardisk with already existing partitions and not on raw disk. ext4?
Listee's... I have a 5.5 box and I have formatted a partition as ext4 however I can't mount it, the mount command is telling me its an unknown file system type. fsck tells me the partition is a clean ext4 partition but I can't mount it. Some reasearch has lead me to believe the problem is that ext4 isn't enabled in the kernel by default in 5.5 (this was originally a 5.2 box that

Advice on partitioning a Dell MD1200 disk array
Hi, I've just got possession of a Dell PE R720 with 2 MD1200 disk enclosures. Both MD1200 are fully populated with 12 x 3 TB disks The system will basically be a student file-server running CentOS 6.x serving various size files from small c programs to multi gigabyte audio and video files over GB ethernet. The first MD1200 will be configured as the NFS disk. The requirements are for 6

raid 5 install
Hello list. The next days we are going to install Centos 7 on a new server, with 4*3Tb sata hdd as raid-5. We will use the graphical interface to install and set up raid. Do I have to consider anything before installation, because the disks are very large? Does the graphical use the parted to set/format the raid? I hope the above make sense. Thank you in advance. Being Green, Time to make the servers sleep!
Shadies and Mentlemen; I am trying to be green and put our backup servers to sleep during the day and have them wake on LAN and fire back up at night for our nightly backups as "sleep" is a sort of low power usage mode. (At this point I would be curious to know the different levels of sleep, what can I achieve? Does my server just drop into a low power state, or can I stop the hard

Scrubbing a zpool built on LUNs
I''m building a system with two Apple RAIDs attached. I have hardware RAID5 configured so no RAIDZ or RAIDZ2, just a basic zpool pointing at the four LUNs representing the four RAID controllers. For on-going maintenance, will a zpool scrub be of any benefit? From what I''ve read with this layer of abstration ZFS is only maintaining the metadata and not the actual data on the
