SATA vs RAID5 vs VMware
Hello,
I have strange behaviour on a server that I can't get a handle on. I have a
reasonably powerful server running VMware server 1.0.4-56528. It has a RAID5
build with mdadm on 5 SATA drives. Masses of ram and 2 XEON CPUs. But it
stutters.
Example : fire up vi, press and keep finger on i. After filling 2-3 lines, the
display is stopped for 2-12 seconds. Then they continue. This

Request for additional patch in CentOS Plus kernel
Hi,
I have an Adaptec eSATA card, model 1225SA:
http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/products/Controllers/Hardware/sata/entry/AAR-1225SA/
Although the chipset is sata_sil24, it is not recognized by default by
the kernel because its PCI ID is different than the ones recognized by
this driver on the CentOS kernel. The driver recognizes PCI IDs such
as 0x3132, 0x0242, 0x3131, but not 0x0244, which is the

e-sata
Hi,
Does anybody has any experience with e-sata on CentOS5.2?
- How fast is it? Same as an internal sata?
- Does it support sata-2?
- Does it "hot-plug" like a USB?

CPU soft lockup XEN 4.1rc
Hello,
Similar to others I have freezeups on the system, it is consistent with
high IO load. If the system runs (even with multiple) XenU it does not
happen. But I can consistently force the situation to occur.
Running 4 dd processes dumping 20GB each on a LVM/mdadm soft RAID5
volume it consistenly crashes in a DomU. Running without XEN I do not
see the problem at all - (e.g. after about 3TB of

btrfs raid1 on 16TB goes read-only after "btrfs: block rsv returned -28"
Dear Devs,
I have x4 4TB HDDs formatted with:
mkfs.btrfs -L bu-16TB_0 -d raid1 -m raid1 /dev/sd[cdef]
/etc/fstab mounts with the options:
noatime,noauto,space_cache,inode_cache
All on kernel 3.8.13.
Upon using rsync to copy some heavily hardlinked backups from ReiserFS,
I''ve seen:
The following "block rsv returned -28" is repeated 7 times until there

libata and PMP (Port Multiplier) support in CentOS
I'm looking at buying a NORCO DS-1220 and it comes with a NORCO 4618
PCI-X card (4 port eSATA, with a port multiplier on the card or the
chassis). I've been trying to pin down whether or not CentOS will see
all 12 drives, and I haven't seen anything that is definitive. I see
that the kernel module sata_sil24 supports the SiI3124 chip on the NORCO
4618 card, but I haven't found

SiI 3114 and RAID
I've two machines with almost identical hardware (slightly different
CPUs). The SATA/RAID controller is SiI 3114.
One of the servers was installed a while ago by someone else, it's
running Fedora Core 5 and RAID is enabled:

Quick question: CentOSPlus kernel vs. base kernel.
What does the CentOSPlus kernel have that the standard kernel does not?
It is just additional drivers and modules? Or are there additional
differences?

External SATA enclosures: SiI3124 and CentOS 5?
Tired of "little problems" trying to keep 7 drives working in an old desktop
computer, I'm considering an external SATA drive enclosure with a controller
card based on the Sil3124.
http://www.ipcdirect.net/servlet/Detail?no=152
I'm a bit concerned about long-term support, namely that the company's driver
page only lists drivers through RedHat 4.

HotPlug, eSATA, and /media
Ok, got a quickie.
I have an eSATA drive, a 750GB Seagate in an eSATA external enclosure, and a
Silicon Image sil3132 ExpressCard controller for my laptop. The disk and
controller work great in CentOS 5 (or F7, for that matter), if I specifically
mount it.
This is not how I want to have to use this drive, however. I want to hotplug
it; that is, plug the controller into the laptop, and then

Req. For Info: External Journal Pros/Cons, advisable size
I have a basic question, being new to EXT3.
What are the pros and cons of using an external
journal?
Also, for a Terabyte-sized system, what should I use
as the external journal's size? is there a general
rule-of-thumb to follow when choosing the external
journal's size?
I know these are very basic questions, if they have
been already answered in some FAQ, please let me know.

REQ: A "tcfilter" program
Will someone please write a program that can be used to assist with u32
matches?
What I envision is something like ipchains'' "--check" option, which
tests a packet against the selected chain. tcfilter should check
against the loaded filters.
It would be REALLY nice if:
1) counters (showing the number of hits (in packets)) could be included.
2) a debug mode showing what the

Req: download timer
Does anyone have a module they have wrote and are willing to share to
measure the time an image takes to download?
As my last post indicates, I am experimenting with gPXE, and am
interested in benchmarking tftp/lighttpd/apache for transfers of images
/ files.
I sadly lack any real programming skills, and get called away from my
desk enough that sitting there with a stop watch isn't
