SSD drives for the OS - 1 or 2?
Preparing to build a small replacement server (initially built in 2005)
and normally for the OS I would buy 2x500GB drives and deploy in a RAID
1 configuration.
Now we have SSD drives available
- does just a single SSD drive offer the same reliability or is there
advantage in deploying two in a Raid 1 config?
Also, what form factor / interface is best for the SSD OS boot device on
a server

Connecting to SQL Server 2000 database - errors
I just started investigating Ruby on Rails and am trying the tutorial.
I need to connect to a SQL Server 2000 database for testing purposes. I
followed the instructions in the How-To on the wiki for SQL Server. The
problem is that when attempting to connect to the database I receive the
following errors:
DBI::DatabaseError in RecipeController#new

Systemd and VirtualBox
The continuing challenges of getting a workable server continue.
The latest spins of VirtualBox seem to have solved the issues of DKMS
auto compiles of the driver being aborted. The yum updates work as
expected, provided one stops the running vms manually first.
However, trying to get systemd to start the vms is proving to be a PITA.
I have extensively googled and found that there are no

CentOS7 changes strike again.
Still in the process of migrating from an old CentOS5 server to a brand
new CentOS7.
After finally getting Virtualbox-5.0 installed and a new Wondoze10 Pro
installed it became time to shift the data from the old server to the new.
The old server is headless and I installed the old WindozeXP into the
Virtualbox4.x via the command line.
To do some of the admin I needed to attach to the windoze

Can't MS SQL Server 2000 Client/Server
Hi to all!
I am running Ubuntu 8.04 with Wine 1.1.0 installed.
I am trying to install MS SQL Server 2000 Client on the machine in order to connect to a Windows Server Machine running an MS SQL Server 2000.
But the installation process won't proceed, it only reaches the "Setup is searching for installed components..." (w/ the green background), after that it just terminates the

using a local MS SQL Server
I would appreciate any tips/clues/advice very much.
I have started using ruby on rails and when the MS SQL Server database is on
a different box than my dev box (where the RoR app is located) I can connect
fine. However when I try to connect to a MS SQL Server database on the same
box as my RoR app I get an error. I have tried to use the IP address of the
dev box as the value of

miro from rpmforge appears to have dep solving issues
Hi folks,
Anyone know the whereabouts of libgtkembedmoz.so()(64bit) as it is
needed by miro-1.0-1.el5.rf.x86_64 (rpmforge)
I tried a whatprovides and have looked at epel as well as rpmforge - no
luck.
While I'm asking, I'm looking for an internet HD TV viewer - miro looked
interesting - any other products you know of?
TIA
Rob

tables and default
I already setup several 2 gateways boxes, with rules too decide which lan
should use which gateway.
Now I''m stuck with a simpler problem. At home I was just making some
experimental setup:
* 1 adsl (ppp0)
* 1 more tables in rt_tables (200 ping) called "bluff"
* table ''bluff *has not* a default route

Rails and MSDE
Has anyone worked with Rails on Microsoft''s MSDE database server? (Not
SQL 2005 Express, but the older MSDE) I''m curious on the performance
and stability of the SQL Driver for Rails. I have a client needing a
new web app, but I have to pull and store the data from MSDE (I have no
choice on changing this).

default gw route has gone?
Weird behaviour.
A couple of days ago I installed another DSL router.
During the process I have somehow caused the default gw route to
disappear - on system start up the interface comes up fine, I can see
and connect to the local subnet but not to the internet.

5.4 kernel versions?
Please excuse a possibly dumb question.
Prior to the release of CentOS 5.4 I believe two updated 5.4 kernels
were released as part of 5.3
2.6.18-164.el5 and 2.6.18-164.2.1.el5
Now that 5.4 is released we have just the 2.6.18-164.el5 kernel.
Now the dumb question - what happened to the updated kernel?
I now have workstations running 5.4 with the 164.2.1.el5 as they get yum
update run regularly,

Hi List,
I use the kmod-nvidia package on my CentOS workstations.
Always this has "just worked".
Doing a yum update this morning I now get this:

nfs (v3?) fails to allow writes and permission changes
Hi All,
I have an nfs mount from my CentOS 5.3 client to a CentOS5.3 server.
This has been functioning correctly for some years.
Beginning last week I had problems saving OpenOffice documents onto the
nfs mounted volume.
OpenOffice just times out with a file io error.
So I tried just a simple shell - cd to the mounted volume did a vi
create of text file - no problems.
tried a chmod +w on an
