using Linux as a NAS / SAN device
Hi, I''m looking at using Linux as a NAS / SAN device, and would like some input from other''s who have done this before? How would it compare to commercial SAN devices, Thecus N8800SAS (http://www.thecus.com/products_over.php?cid=11&pid=177&set_language=english) or something similar to these? I would probably use hardware RAID 10, and could go with either SAS / SATA,

What NAS device(s) do you use? And why?
If you use any NAS (or a SAN) devices, what do you use? And I''m referring more to larger scale network storage than your home PC or home theater system. We''ve had very good experiences with our NetGear ReadyNAS devices but I''m in the market for something new. The NetGear''s aren''t the cheapest ones around but they do what it says on the box. Making a NAS/HFS server
I ran into a problem that I couldn't resolve straight away, but would like to solve for sometime in the future. We have a Thecus storage server (similar to a Buffalo TeraByte, if that helps?) that has a Mac filesystem on it. The mother board was failing, but the drives are still OK. A new box has been added, so the urgency is sort of gone. I was going to try and back up the data to a new

settings up cheap a NAS / SAN server, is it possible?
Hi all I want to look at setting up a simple / cheap SAN / NAS server using normal PIV motherboard, 2GB (or even more) RAM, Core 2 Duo CPU (probably a Intel 6700 / 6750 / 6800) & some SATA HDD's (4 or 6x 320GB - 750GB). My budget is limited, so I can't afford a pre-built NAS device. Can this be done with CentOS? I've been looking FreeNAS (which is built on FreeBSD), and it

using CentOS as an iSCSI server?
Has anyone succesfully setup, and used CentOS as an iSCSI server? I'm trying to setup a server with 4x500GB HDD's, setup in RAID 10 to act as an iSCSI server for a virtualization project, but I can't find a decent howto on how to setup an iSCSI server using CentOS. I would like to setup something like Openfiler, but we also need todo some other stuff that OpenFiler doesn't

Low End NAS hardware.
Hey, The recent discussion on NAS/SAN and the Thecus N8800 got me to thinking. Bit of background. I have an old Dual Athlon MP2800+ that I'm using for a home web/file server. It runs fine but between the noise of the various fans and it's location in the living room, I've been asked by my spouse to find a replacement for it that's smaller & quieter. Looking at the Thecus, and

Failure reporting (mixed feelings)
Hi there, ? As suggested on the samba wiki, I like to report failures using samba4. ? Story: I had setup a general Office environment using samba4 (2 servers) with AD intergrated DNS (samba internal), Zarafa mail server (Prof.), ISC dhcp with split-scope and file shares (users, profiles, data and application) for a test-case environment.? Plan was to deploy this setup for a customer? (small 25

CentOS MD RAID 1 on Openfiler iSCSI
Has anybody tried or knows if it is possible to create a MD RAID1 device using networked iSCSI devices like those created using OpenFiler? The idea I'm thinking of here is to use two OpenFiler servers with physical drives in RAID 1, to create iSCSI virtual devices and run CentOS guest VMs off the MD RAID 1 device. Since theoretically, this setup would survive both a single physical drive

Huge number of small files performance regression from 3.5.16 to 4.6.5 with identical smb.conf
Hello Samba experts, I have just successfully replaced the old default Thecus Samba version 3.5.16 on my Thecus NAS (32-bit Intel Atom, 3 GB RAM, i686 Thecus kernel 2.6.33) by a current Samba 4.6.5 build that I have cross-compiled myself from scratch. Note that so far, I am using the unchanged (i.e. exactly identical) old 3.5.16 smb.conf file for 4.6.5. Everything seems to work fine in

Friendly Reminder: Huge number of small files performance regression from 3.5.16 to 4.6.5 with identical smb.conf
Hello again, Jeremy and other Samba experts, I'm sorry to be such a pain in your neck(s), but I still need your help in looking for help trying to find out why SMB2/3.1.1 in Samba 4.6.5 performs so much worse than SMB/1.5 in Samba 3.6.15 in scenarios with a huge number of small files. As requested by Jeremy, I have done wireshark "pcapng" captures of the four scenarios as

OT: Replacing Venerable NAS
I have an original-label Infrant (now NetGear) ReadyNAS storage appliance that's been running for 8+ years. Except for replacing its power supply, it has not skipped a beat in all this time. I use it primarily as a backup device (via NFS) for a couple of Linux machines, (via SMB) for a couple of Windows PC's, and (via ftp) for web sites at my hosting provider. SMART+ reporting shows

Tyan Thunder K8SE S2892 Report
I had my eye on the Tyan dual-Opteron mobos for awhile. I tried to find a posting *anywhere* sharing experiences with these boards under Linux. No such luck. So placing myself under the heading "Where Angles Fear to Tread," I went ahead and built a system anyway. Here's what I've learned. The specs: Tyan Thunder K8SE S2892, BIOS 1.01 2x Opteron 270, 2Ghz Dual-Core, retail
