[offtopic] idea status.net
Hey all I was sitting here thinking about things and I came up with an idea that sounded, at least in my head, like a good one. There has been a boom in things like twitter and brainbird and social networking setups in general. I was wondering if the project or anyone would be interested in setting up a status.net server specifically for the CentOS project ? Why? you ask, well here are some of

Testing and using a microphone
Hi, What's the most simple way to check if my microphone works on a plain CentOS 5.3 desktop? Is there a simple way, for example, to record voice into a simple .wav file? Niki

Music while you work - or not
Wanting to listen to magnatune.com while I worked, I discovered that flash is not working. It appears that I don't have libflashplayer, but yum tells me that no such package is available. I must need a different repo, I think, but what? Currently I have ls /etc/yum.repos.d/ adobe-linux-i386.repo epel-testing.repo CentOS-Base.repo kbsingh-CentOS-Extras.repo

a few questions
Hello I am curious about some articles I would like to contribute to the wiki. I would like to add some articles about installing games, like UT, Quake3 with the Urban Terror mod and Enemy territory. The question I have is are these articles something that the group would like on the wiki ? I know CentOS is more aimed at servers and sysadmins than home user but there are some of us out there and

bug triage guide
Hello I was wondering if someone could put together a bug triage guide and put it on the wiki. I was looking for something to do tonight and z00dax said go hunt some bugs. So I went first to the wiki to look for a guide for a proper procedure on how the team would like bug triaging handled but didn't find one. I have triaged before but i know every place is different. So some guidelines

TwinView (on NVIDIA graphics card)?
Hi, Is anyone here using TwinView with NVIDIA graphics drivers under CentOS 5? Just tried this configuration (I've been using dual monitors as separate X screens in the past), and while it works in a sense, there are a few issue that will probably prevent me from using it for real. Notably, which screen new applications start on (when using the Applications menu or panel launchers) seems to

offtopic repo's further discussion
Hello All I may have ruffled some feathers with a comment i made earlier about rpmforge. This was posted back on the ML. Lost my menu options again - KDE messes with Gnome?
This was a problem I had a while back. I lost the "Preferences" menu item in my "Applications" menu in Gnome. Mounting /tmp nosuid, noexec
Does mounting /tmp as noexec, nosuid break anything in CentOS 5? I've been in solaris land forever and a day and this is a pretty standard security measure. I noticed CentOS comes default mounting /tmp with both those options allowed.. I'm getting constant php hack attacks against (mostly script kiddie level stuff right now) my server and will rest much easier with this setting in place..

Suggestion for "how to" section: easy way to install the JDK?
I've read website http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/JavaOnCentOS. I am a total newbie with CentOS, but currently, with update 21 of the Java 6 JDK and CentOS 5.5, the installing the JDK appears to be simpler: 1. Download the latest *rpm.bin jdk (as of today,jdk-6u21-linux-i586-rpm.bin) fromhttp://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/widget/jdk6.jsp 2. chmod +x the downloaded file. 3. su 4. Execute

I have downloaded the EE JDK 5.07 for Linux from Sun. If I try and run java_ee_sdk-5_07-linux.bin as a normal user it works fine and I get the gui installer to appear. However if I run it as root, I get this output and then if hangs indefinitely ultimately requiring a kill -9 to stop: [root at canthus Downloads]# ./java_ee_sdk-5_07-linux.bin Checking available disk space...
