Hi, I want to rename some volume groups and logical volumes. I was not surprised when it would not let me rename active volumes. So I booted up the system using the CentOS 5.5 LiveCD, but the LiveCD makes the logical volumes browsable using Nautilus, so they are still active and I can't rename them. Tried: /usr/sbin/lvchange -a n VolGroup00/LogVol00 but it still says: LV

Centos 5.4 on Acer Aspire One
I currently have my Acer Aspire One netbook set up with Fedora 11. I would like to change it over to Centos 5.4 if I can. I downloaded the Centos 5.4 i386 livecd image and made a bootable USB flash drive out of it. Unfortunately, when I boot off of that flash drive, Grub (I guess) immediately turns the screen entirely white. If I hit a key I can faintly see the outline of "Press tab to

Laptop hd incorrect
Hello I'm new to linux and am trying to install centos 5.3 on my laptop and it has an ata drive but centos does not see the had or cdrom. Googleing does not give me much to check. The laptop is a hp-g60 249wm, latest bios update. The bios does not have any ability to change drive information. The bios basically allows me to only set time, date and boot item. Any advice or direction is

creating partitions on a 2.7TB drive
Hello, sorry for the long email, it's a little hard to explain this issue. The gist of it is that the Ubuntu version of parted allowed me to do something which perhaps should not be allowed i.e. creating partitions on a 2.7TB drive when the partition table is not *gpt* but *msdos*. I am trying to configure 2 identical servers, both are Dell Poweredge 2970 machines with 6 disks in them

Recommendation for a Linux alternative to Centos - ATH9K disaster
I persuaded a reluctant friend to buy a new computer. I enthusiastically extolled the joys and benefits of Centos and promised to install it on his new machine - dual booting with Micro$oft Windoze 7. His super-duper new laptop arrived. Acer, AMD 4 core, fast etc. but not as nice looking as my impressive HP DV5. The wireless refused to connect. After 8 hours on Saturday I could sometimes see

CentOS 5 LiveCD better than the real one?
Folks, I am terribly puzzled by an issue reported as bug 2381 [http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2381] ? definitely an upstream bug, as it does the same under X/OS 5 and StartCom 5. Simply put: Hibernation fails with horrendous I/O errors after swsusp starts dumping to swap. What bugs me is that hibernating from the CentOS 5 LiveCD *works*!!! (on the same hardware) How could I investigate to

Need Broadcom 4311 firmware for CentOS 5
Any hope of getting my laptop's Broadcom BCM94311 wireless running on CentOS 5? I find lots of references to using fwcutter to get the needed firmware from Windows drivers, but there's a Catch-22: Version of fwcutter that generate files for the bcm43xx driver in CentOS 5 don't recognize the md5sum of any currently available Windows driver. Newer versions of fwcutter

Anyone Having Any Luck Downloaing the DVD ISO?
I've been trying for 2 weeks to download the dvd iso torrent... Shows a ton of seeders, few leechers, but very poor performance.. (I'm correctly setup for torrents and get fast downloads normally) Only like 4% downloaded and crawling. I've tried the trackers from every one of the mirror sites. I can't use the net install because the systems I am installing are on a closed network.

Hardisk cloning for centos-5.3
Hi, I want to clone my hardisk containing the centos-5.3 OS and its swap region on to new raw hardisk via network either through ssh, tftp or ftp. How do i do that ? Is there any Tool for that or will DD command be sufficient.I know that dd command will have to be used on hardisk with already existing partitions and not on raw disk. Laptop and NFS homedir
Afternoon, Are there any documented best practices for using NFS home directories on laptops? Right now, and this is on CentOS 7, when I disconnect the machine from the network, the desktop freezes, and I can't even tell if the machine switches to the wireless network. If this sort of adapter switching, which is standard in e.g. Windows 10, is even supported. Thanks for any insights.

CentOS 6.4 x86_64 VM Install freezes
I am trying to install a CentOS 6.4 x86_64 VM using a CentOS 5.9 x86_64 host, but its install has froze *twice*. What I am doing is to create a 10gig LVM volume, which I put a MS-DOS partition table on (using fdisk). I then format the only partition to ext3, install grub and install the pxeboot kernel and initrd.img and a simple grub.conf to load this. I have the CentOS 6.4 x86_64 ISOs mounted

CF disks images and centos
Hi all, I have 8G -CF cards that I have been putting linux on. Everything was working fine till yesterday when I got a new batch of CF cards. The size has changed. The original CF card was 7637M (255 heads/63 sectors/928 cylinders) The new CF card is 8019M (255 heads/63 sectors/974 cylinders) I would have thought putting the smaller image file onto the larger CF card would be ok. However its

I have two computers: both running CentOS 6.7, 64-bit, with kernel 2.6.32-573.12.1.el6.x86_64. One is a laptop with an 2 core Intel processor and the other is a desktop machine with a 4 core AMD processor. Both with selinux enabled. I have a USB serial port device (a RR-CirKits LCC-Buffer USB). On the desktop I am getting this error: sauron.deepsoft.com% sudo minicom Device /dev/ttyACM0

Firefox 78 under CentOS 6 -- no sound?
I did a yum update on my CentOS 6 laptop and it upgraded Firefox to 78, and FF stopped seeing my mic and speakers. Is there some magic I need to do? As a short term (?) fix, I downgraded back to Firefox 68. Lilo for CentOS 5?
Does there exist a version of Lilo built for x86_64 CentOS 5? Best CentOS to install on *old* laptop?
I've found an old IBM OmniBook 800 and am curious whether I can get it going again. (Currently it boots either Windows 95 or some then-contemporary version of Slackware.) The CDROM is external (SCSI, I think) and the machine won't boot from it, so it'd require a boot floppy. Any suggestions? Or is CentOS entirely the wrong Linux to be thinking about for this?

Using cdrecord on CentOS
Hi, I'd like to use cdrecord on the command line. I'm currently reading the relevant chapter in Carla Schroder's "Linux Cookbook". Unfortunately, some of the tricks and hints included in the book don't seem to work the same way on a standard CentOS 5 install. 1) Am I supposed to be root to use cdrecord and burn an .iso file? 2) How do I specify a device?
