clustering
Hey folks,
I just went through the archives trying to find some info on this but
did not come up with much other than it seems there are a few experts
here on the list.
I have no experience with clustering and have just taken over a Stem
Cell Research Lab that has a Grid Engine cluster. I have not yet dug
into the details of Grid Engine (only been here a week now) but am
just trying to get up

New contributor
Hello,
I've just signed up to offer some of my time to the project as suggested by
Ernesto Celis on CentOS Spanish users' list.
I'd like to help translate the project's wiki pages to Spanish. I'll be
happy to receive some suggestions as to what would be my first assignment.
Cheers to you all and the biggest THANK YOU!

Newsletter 1002, Spanish version
Hello, I have just finished my Spanish translation of the last
Newsletter. As I have no edit rights to the proper zone, I have
written it into my own personal page
http://wiki.centos.org/EduardoGrosclaude. Please some elder member of
the familiy snip it off from there and hang it where it belongs. :)
I have not involved myself in prior proofreading, so this may be a bit
off. May I slip in a small

Slow Xen on CentOS 5.2?
Hello,
Should Xen still work on CentOS 5.2 with 1GB RAM? On my Toshiba
Satellite notebook Xen performed reasonably well as of CentOS 5.0.
After I updated the system, Xen takes an unusable startup time. Every
task at boot, since nash is fired, seems to take increasingly longer.
I can't seem to find any references to this problem. Where should I look first?
Thanks in advance

PAPI + perfctr on CentOS 5?
Has anyone succesfully compiled a PAPI+perfctr-enabled kernel? I've
been mixing and matching instructions from the PAPI distribution and
those from CentOS wiki to no avail.

Geany plugins out of sync
I'm intending to do some version control, hence looking for some
plugins. Geany and geany-plugins packages in Rpmforge seem to be out
of sync:
Name : geany-plugins
Arch : i386
Version : 0.18
Release : 1.el5.rf
Name : geany
Arch : i386
Version : 0.19.1
Release : 1.el5.rf
When both are installed, geany claims that plugins are not

HPC question: torques replacement
Dear Experts,
I know there are many HPC (high performance computing) experts on this
list. I'd like to ask your advise.
Almost two decades ago I chose to go with OpenPBS (turned down condor
and other alternatives for whatever reason) for clusters and number
crunchers I support for the Department at the university. It turned out
to be not bad, long lived choice. At some point I smoothly

Will Intel D101GGCL work?
Hello,
Please. Can the following spec give me some headache with CentOS 4.4?
Where to find out?
I have read former advice on the list about not to mess with Intel PCI

Wikisource of original docs
Hello,
When it comes to translations, it would be useful to have the original
sources. Is there any place for us translators to pick up a copy? We
do not have edit access to originals.

DBMail on CentOS?
Hello,
is anybody using DBMail or any other approach to manage huge volume mail
installations? Comments about it? Are RPMs somewhere out there?

Network card w/special module
Hello, I have this cheap network card which insists on me compiling its own
sundance.ko module every time I update my kernel release. I had the poor
idea to leave nightly yum service enabled on this remote server, only to
find my network was gone at the following reboot. Had to go there, figure
out that kernel stuff is carefully avoided by up2date, but not so by yum
service, and rebuild.

Statistics on stability?
Hello,
I want to compare CentOS to Fedora and other distros on a
stability/network-dependance basis. Where should I look for some published
statistics on updates? I mean probably megabytes per week (or whichever
units, of published updates over time), per distro.
Thank you in advance

Encore/sundance boards?
I have this cheap "ENCORE 10/100Mbps Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter" which comes
with its own driver that compiles to 'sundance.ko' and performs bad (30%
packet loss) on a fully updated CentOS 4.4 box. This brand, model and driver
have worked OK for me on some other CentOS installations, none of which are
4.4. Short of replacing the board, which you can bet I will do, can anybody

Root fs suddenly goes r/o
Out of the blue, dmesg on my HP Proliant w/ a SCSI disk gives loads of
messages like this one:
EXT3-fs error (device dm-0) in start_transaction: Journal has aborted
Then the root fs goes read-only, so little else can be done on the machine.
LVM locks up. At restart, fs needs a reboot to recover after fsck. The host
starts up ok, then I am given some more minutes before the problem
reappears.

Xen and Torque
Dear Xen users.
Have anyone tried to integrate Xen with Torque resource management system?
Could you please help me with an advice for a system I''m developing that
relies on torque.
Let me describe the system first.
The part of the system that talks with torque should request a certain
amount on nodes of a cluster and launch there a virtual machine instance
(one vm instance per host).

Motherboards for HPC applications
Hello,
Can somebody recommend CentOS-OK, dual socket motherboards for compute
elements? A quick look up at Intel pages suggests they are thinking of
them as "server boards", but then they recommend them as "for SMB",
I'm somewhat puzzled about it.
It would be nice to know what MBs you are using, pros and cons.
Thank you in advance

Monitoring OpenVPN TUNs with MRTG
I want to check some client OpenVPN TUN interfaces with MRTG running at my
VPN server, so I have to specify their OID interface numbers in mrtg.cfg.
The problem is, these numbers are dynamic, as they may change whenever
OpenVPN restarts for any reason... so, how can I write stanzas such as
Target[somehostvpninterface] : ifInOctets.X&ifOutOctets.X:public@
<SOMEHOST.IP>

Spanish Manuals missing?
This path does exist in the English branch of Wiki:
http://wiki.centos.org/Documentation -> http://www.centos.org/docs ->

(as does this another, redundant path, leading to same docs:
http://wiki.centos.org/Documentation -> http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals

IIRC these are provided by Deployment_Guide-en-US-XXX.rpm and other

Yum-complete-transaction wants to wipe my system out
After some enabling/disabling new repos (pgdg for PostgreSQL
specifically) and admittedly some yum action that may have gone
uncompleted, I am advised to run yum-complete-transaction. However,
when I attempt to do this, yum warns that 225 packages will be erased,
all of which I deeply care for. How can I safely back out of this
situation?
Thank you in advance
