trying to install 5.2 on a laptop
Hello.
I burned a CD with the 5.2 netinstall iso, and installed it onto a
laptop (Acer Aspire 3680). Note that I'm *totally* new to laptops.
The install went fine. But, when I boot it, it errors at the user login.
A screen comes up, stating that X11 cannot start, and that it's probably
the mouse.
A bit of investigating revealed that there is no Synaptics module
installed. It will

flash drive crashes machine
I just installed 5.3 on a tower box. When I plug in a usb flash drive,
the machine crashes. I don't know how to diagnose the problem; I used
gnome-system-log, and got this (watching it as I plugged it in):

uhci_hcd and address 2

Java RE
Hello.
Package Manager reports (with a green checkmark) that I have java-1.6.0
installed on my machine (running Cent 5.3), but it seems to not be
running. I used http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml and got
"Something is wrong. Java is not working."
Perhaps I'm confused on which program I need to use java-coded apps. PM
lists this app as "OpenJDK Runtime

RAID support in kernel?
Hello.
I'm setting up a computer that will run 'CentOS 6 server'. The MB is an
Asus with a hw raid controller (Promise PDC-20276), which I want to use
in RAID-1 mode. I noted (from a MB website) that it also needs a driver
- which is probably why it's called a 'fakeraid'.
So, I've been trying to determine if any recent kernels support this
chip. Using

missing module dir?
I'm teaching myself about ethernet cards, and found a TLDP page. I have
CentOS 5.3.
In this section: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO-2.html#ss2.4
in the 'Driver as module' subsection, regarding PCI cards, it states
that there should be a directory "/lib/modules/`uname -r`/net"

need help with keyring
I should mention that I'm a total newbie with keyrings! I tried
searching for help sites - found 1, but I still have a problem. If there
is a website (or sites) that explain this, please post it (them)!
Ok, so I have a laptop with wifi, running CentOS 5.2. When I boot it, it
finds the nearby wifi signals, and tries to connect to mine. To do this,
it puts up a window to get my default

splash screen resolution
I installed CentOS 5.3 on a desktop box, and I'm having a problem with
the splash screen resolution (during bootup).
I suppose that it somehow got configged when I set the GUI's screen (I
run in level 5). I think that, in finding the highest res for the GUI, I
went past the monitor's capability. But it's good now.
During boot, I get a funny 'double' display (2 pointers, 2

can't "make"
Hello.
I just fresh-installed 5.3 onto my laptop, and I have a problem trying
to get wifi working. Be aware that I have 5.2 on it, and did the same
process, and it worked great!
I'm using http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops/WirelessAR5007EG -- as
I did for 5.2. The problem arises in section 6:

Why new "SCSI" devices in 4.5 kernel?
I've been running CentOS 4.4 on my Thinkpad 600E machine. Now the new
2.6.9-55 kernel wants to support the SCSI devices I don't have.
After the 4.4 --> 4.5 update, on the reboot kudzu informed me that it had
detected my PIIX4 controller. Well, OK. That same chipset has been in
this machine for 10 years, but if the OS wants to re-detected it that's
fine with me.

Troubles for an non-IT beginner
hello,
I am absolutely new, means from non-IT sector but have attraction (developed
recently) towards linux and have chosen the centos distro for the
installation as an OS in my home PC for personal use. I went to the page:
http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/5/isos/i386/
But don't understand amongst the variety of options there. I also don't know
the technical terms like md5,

Manual scratch allocation : memory usage doubt
Hi,
I am currently encoding 32 Khz/Qual-10/UWB encode mode, with
MANUAL_ALLOC enabled ( similar to the c5x/c6x configuration).
In file sb_celp.c, I noticed the scratch memory grow during
recursive (UWB -> WB) calls to 'sb_encode'.

PLM package PGGLS strange behavior
When using the PLM package (version 1.2-8), I encounter the probem that
calling the FGLS estimator evokes strange behavior, when choosing the
"random" effects model. After calling the PGGLS function to estimate FGLS,
PLM gives me a warning, stating that the "random" model has been replaced
with the "pooling" model. I would, however, really like to estimate the

contradictory netfilter default policy
I'm curious why CentOS contradicts its own (or, actually RH's) netfilter
default policy.
On http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Network/IPTables , at the end of
section 1, it's stated that (generally) the default policy for INPUT is
to DROP. So, why is it set to ACCEPT?
Btw, Fedora is also this way.

which gcc package?
Hello.
I tried to compile a program (plugger), but I don't have *any* sort of
compiler installed. This is on Cent5.3.
So, I used Package Manager, concentrating on gcc. But, it seems that I
have a choice, thus:
gcc-4.1.2-46.el5.i386
gcc-4.1.2-46.el5_4.1.i386
gcc-4.1.2-46.el5_4.2.i386
gcc-c++-4.1.2-46.el5.i386
gcc-c++-4.1.2-46.el5_4.1.i386

printer trouble - missing driver?
I can't get my HP DeskJet D2345 (USB) to work on my CentOS 5.3 machine.
It'll work on another machine (with Fedora 7).
I compared the installation details (in CUPS http://localhost:631) -
seems that Cent does not have the driver. On the F7 machine, the device
is "D2345 (HP D2300 series)" and the driver is "HP DeskJet D2300
