Slow clock on CentOS 4.4 in a VMware VM
I'm running a CentOS 4.4 VM on a Windows XP host with VMware Server, and have the problem that my clock runs too slow (it happens in VMware Workstation as well). It loses between 30 and 45 seconds every minute! This is a known problem and can be fixed by adding "nosmp noapic nolapic" to the boot command according to VMware tech note ID 1420. However, despite adding these

OT: SysAdmin Stories
Hello, I'm compiling a collection of stories from the systems administrator trenches. They can be short or long, funny or about a particularly challenging problem or period, or even something that appeared very technically challenging and ended up being something very simple. Stories which are more political would be ok so long as they do not have an agenda or can be interpreted as a

filesize limitation in CentOS or exim?
Hallo, today I had a surprising situation. Exim stopped. It's a German centos 5.3 64 Bit installation so the messages are partial in German. Then I tried a restart: [root at centos ~]# service exim restart exim beenden: [FEHLGESCHLAGEN] exim starten: /bin/bash: line 1: 6596 Die maximale Dateigr??e ist ?berschritten

Is there an openssh security problem?
Hello, is there a security issue on CentOS 5.3 with openssh 4.3? I ask that cause of http://www.h-online.com/security/Rumours-of-critical-vulnerability-in-OpenSSH-in-Red-Hat-Enterprise-Linux--/news/113712 and http://secer.org/hacktools/0day-openssh-remote-exploit.html. Should ssh login from internet on CentOS better be disabled? regards Olaf

mysql Workbench
Greetings, Is there a centos repo with mysql workbench anywhere. In the same vein, is there a publicly available build system for centos where people can submit the source tar.gz and get hotly baked rpm and the icing would be with some way to resolve dependencies?? It would be great to have one.. Regards and thanks, Rajagopal

Lightweight MTA for XEN CentOS guests
All, For a production environment, I'd like to setup CentOS XEN guests as lightweight as possible. I'd like the XEN guests to be able to send nightly email as all CentOS servers do, but there is no reason to run a mail server as the CentOS Dom0 already has an email server running that can act as an email smart host. The options that seem most appealing to me are either ssmtp or sendmail

IPSec VPN Setup?
Hello Everyone, I have been tasked at work with setting up a VPN connection from our server to a client's network. The only problem is that I have never done anything like this before, so I am not sure where to start. We are running CentOS 5.4 on our server. I do not yet know what the client is running for their VPN, the only thing I know of from the client, is we need to use IPSec for our

small window manager
What is an alternative X window manager, supported by CentOS, that has very small memory footprint? I want to avoid twm, because it defaults to interactive placement when not giving geometry options. Slightly OT: check creation of a group
Hi, I'm currently writing an install script for an application, and my already limited Bash skills are a bit rusty. I want to check if a group exists, and if it doesn't, then create it. Only thing I found is: if [ grep medintux /etc/group ]; then continue else groupadd medintux fi Apparently I can't seem to "negate" the test, e. g. something like if !(grep medintux

best parallel / cluster SSH
Hey folks, I stumbled upon this while looking for something else http://www.linux.com/archive/feature/151340 And it is something I could actually really make use of. But right on that site they list 3 different ones, and so I'm wondering what all is out there and what I should use. Is there one that is part of the standard CentOS? thanks, -Alan -- ?Don't eat anything you've

Wake on LAN
Has anyone experience with WOL under Centos (5.3).? If so, how exactly do you put the machine to sleep, and how exactly do you wake it up remotely? -- Timothy Murphy e-mail: gayleard /at/ eircom.net tel: +353-86-2336090, +353-1-2842366 s-mail: School of Mathematics, Trinity College Dublin

dm-multipath use
Are folks in the Centos community succesfully using device-mapper-multipath? I am looking to deploy it for error handling on our iSCSI setup but there seems to be little traffic about this package on the Centos forums, as far as I can tell, and there seems to be a number of small issues based on my reading the dm-multipath developer lists and related resources. -geoff Geoff Galitz Blankenheim

Slow DNS lookups on CentOS6
Most of my desktops are still running CentOS5, but I have installed CentOS6 on a few of them. The users on those desktops are reporting that DNS lookups are slow, and from my brief tests, that does appear to be the case. After some googling, I found a suggestion to disable IPv6, but that didn't help. So I tried to figure out where the delay occurs using strace and ltrace, but that

Configuring sendmail in a corporate environment
I have a stock CentOS 5 system as far as email (sendmail) is concerned that is on our corporate LAN. I am not trying to set up a mail server; I merely want our CentOS systems to be able to send out emails. This works as long as the recipient's domain is our local domain. Any email send to recipients that are not in our local domain get stuck in the queue: # mailq

Will Firefox 2.X be included/supported in CentOS 5?
I know this mostly depends on what is/will be done upstream, but with the recent announcement that Firefox 1.5.X will only receive updates until April 24, 2007, is Firefox 2.X in CentOS' future? Alfred

Problem getting eth0 up
I'm just starting to test CentOS 6 in our environment, and as a first step did a basic install from DVD (Desktop target, all defaults). Next I will try to automate the installations as I did for CentOS 5 using the anakonda-ks.cfg file generated by the manual install. However, I can't wrap my brain around the new NetworkManager to get it to configure the eth0 interface to obtain an IP

yum grouplist error
I keep a local copy of the yum repository using rsync every night.
