There is a workaround:
1. Initiate the VNC session, click on shadow man (start)

R | vnc | X11 fonts
Greetings -
Users of the box I'm putting together will need to be able to run R
remotely, using a virtual desktop. One approach (that I'm trying) is to
use VNC. So far, I can get the remote gnome desktop up on the server
(running Fedora Core 5), and can start R from a terminal. However, for a
lot of the R scripts I've tried, I get 'font errors' - the general error

Missing fonts for tightvnc
You would think installing via yum would handle dependencies, but
perhaps fonts are not managed like dependencies.....
Anyway, I installed tightvnc to test out its IPv6 support.
Installed ok (after I erased regular vnc). But when I tried to start
it, I got 5 warnings about:
Font directory '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc' not found - ignoring
(then the same message for Speedo, Type1,

OT - yum missing from a RHEL4 server???
Hi List;
Sorry for the OT post. However I suspect if anyone outside of RH can help with
this question it would be this list.
I'm starting a new contract with a shop that knows little about Linux and I'm
helping pave the way. I've "inherited" an existing Linux install (RHEL4). I
want to setup some tools but I find that yum is not installed. Is this normal
for a RH box ? I

Trouble with X and vnc-4.0-8.1.i386 on Centos 4.4
I have recently migrated from an old, RedHat Linux 9 - based system (Aurox
9.2) to Centos 4.4.
I am having trouble with vnc causing X unusable until reboot.
By unusable I mean that X screen is either blank or blinking and moving, which
is not cured by X restart until reboot.
My system is:
Compaq EVO D510 SFF
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.80GHz
RAM: 256 MB

xterm clones on VNC problem
I've been scratching my head over this one after setting up VNC on
another existing server. Followed the instructions here
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/VNC-Server as usual. It worked
initially. However since this server is going to be installed in a
rather inconvenient place and having done pretty stupid things before,
I decided for the first time to try the portion that says

Q about dpi, fonts, gnome, Xorg etc
This has been puzzling me for some time and despite bothering Auntie
Google rather a lot, I've yet to find a satisfying answer.
As an old-time (since 1981) unix and X guy, I've generally been fairly
well-able to get fonts to behave in a rational manner. My needs are
pretty simple - I just want 8-point (or 9-point etc) fonts to appear on
the screen as 8-point font - ie more or less 8 *

Fedora 10 KDE plasma font rendering issue
Hello.
I've got a new workstation running Fedora 10 linux and I use the KDE 4.2
desktop which uses some kind of new desktop environment called 'plasma'.
If I start up R and generate a plot (for example: hist(rnorm(10000, mean=0,
sd=1), breaks=100) ). The plot appears but all text (the x/y axes, title,
etc..) is replaced by a square box. No font is rendered at all.
Has anyone else

of wine using an rpm, so I tried to unstall the old stuff. Wouldn't

Homedir access rights and running KDE
Hello,
I use pam_winbind for users authentification and pam_mount for mounting homedirs stored on w2k3 fiel server.
I still have two more problems to solve:
1. I?m not able to set proper access rights on homedir. I want to set
them to 700 but after mounting the homedir access rights are set to 777.
I used to use pam_mkhomedir umask=0077 attribute to set proper rights,
but this have no effect

Better fonts in wine?
I'm using wine 0.9.7 from the extras repository on Fedora Core 4. I've
installed a windows program using wine. The program works very well;
however, the fonts it uses are ugly and difficult to read. The rest of
my system (KDE) uses smooth, beautiful, anti-aliased fonts, and this
windows program is the only exception.
I read the FAQ on the wine homepage, and it says to copy the

vnc problem after OpenSuSE 11.1 update
My Windows XP TightVNC (1.3.9.0) client-session into host OS (named pq3) ...
- Xen 3.3.1_18546_24-0.4.13-x86_64 running on
- Xen kernel 2.6.27.56-0.1.1-x86_64 and
- KDE 3.5.10-17.5.1-x86_64
... works fine.
However, since a recent update it has stopped working for the Xen
guest OpenSuSE 11.1 (named pq5) which is at the same revision as the
host - pq3.
The symptom is ...

VNC on centOS
yum -y install x11vnc
x11vnc -display :0 -forever -bg
firewall-cmd --add-port=5900/tcp --permanent
You should look into VNC passwords, I use the above command in a shell
script for each user in ~/.kde/Autostart
I believe the viewer I'm using is krdc?
