unison versus rsync
Anyone got any actual comparisons between unison and rsync specifically related to the performance of synchronization of large data sets over slow links? I have a huge tree to start replication of Friday and know that if I sync the root paths it will take ages and with the lack of any overall state of progress this won't be optimal as its likely to fail for whatever reason before it can

Xen Networking Issue with CentOS 5.1
Hi, I tried this post on the Xen list first with no answer. I have 4 machines and 3 of which (all different) have no network access when booted into Xen. I tried using Fedora Core 8 and it produced the same results. Is it normal for the virbr0 interface to take an arbitrary IP? How does it decide what to use? An ifconfig when booted into Xen shows the following: eth0 Link encap:Ethernet

(a) WinPower RPM available? (b) where to install if use tar.gz file?
Two quick and simple questions; I want to install the "WinPower" software for my new UPS. On their web site, they have a tar.gz file available for download. I know the reasons for staying with RPM, if at all possible. I''ve Googled and Yahood for ""WinPower"+RPM+Linux and get hits, but no obvious RPM. I tried "yum install winpower" and the response was

UPS (Power) Monitoring on dom0...
Hi All, I have a USB-HID compatible UPS which is connected to my dom0 (CentOS 5.1) which is being monitored.  I have a bunch of domU''s of various OS''es, and was wondering if anyone has a solution to send the "state" of the UPS to the domU''s (read-only).  I''d like that in the event of a power-outage and the UPS''s batteries are low that before

ZFS questions with mirrors
IHAC that is asking the following. any thoughts would be appreciated Take two drives, zpool to make a mirror. Remove a drive - and the server HANGS. Power off and reboot the server, and everything comes up cleanly. Take the same two drives (still Solaris 10). Install Veritas Volume Manager (4.1). Mirror the two drives. Remove a drive - everything is still running. Replace the drive, everything

Show IP Traffic on a port
I am trying to determine the root of an issue I am having. How can I watch traffic destined to a specific port on my CentOS 5.1 box to see if its even hitting it? It would be udp traffic. A problem with power outages
I have a CentOS-6.2 server in Italy. Every few months the server gets into a strange state and stops working after a power outage. I should say that this does not occur after every power outage; I suspect, but have no real evidence for this, that if the power comes back too quickly then the machine gets confused because it is in the middle of closing down. If I am in Italy the solution is simple;

SAS/SATA DAS
I need to replace a slow HP MSA20 that's a bottleneck right now (We are an HP shop). HP's only option with 3.5" SATA drives is stuck at SATA I behind a SAS controller. Dell makes an MD1000 that claims SATA II speeds behind a SAS Perc 5/E (Don't know anything about dell). Anyone got any real world info they can share? I need 3.5" SATA II at least 12 drives behind SAS, I am

[LLVMdev] Deep JIT specialization
Hi all, I'm attempting to use LLVM for run-time code specialization, but I'm facing a performance hurdle. I'm currently performing the specialization during the AST to LLVM IR translation, but unfortunately this leads to relatively slow recompiles as LLVM has to perform all the heavy (optimization) passes over and over again. So I was hoping that by first creating unspecialized LLVM

Cron and Cluster
I need an idea on how to accomplish this: I have a cluster that I only want to run cron jobs on when its active. I know the cron script can check for node status, but then I have multiple copies to maintain wheres my existing resources all reference config on the shard fs (httpd/sql etc) so a change on the active node makes that permanent on the next node. Any idea how to do this? Thanks! jlc

system smtp server question
If I have a production mailserver and a series of Linux servers that all develop mail from logging etc, it seems slightly redundant to have so many smtp servers installed on each of those boxes simply forwarding mail as I choose to not have local delivery. Is there a mechanism possible in CentOS to setup a pointer to a different mailserver such that programs like mailx could still send mail?

iSCSI ini and ESX Server
I always used IET on CentOS but I have a quick server to setup to backup some VM's, then migrate to DAS on another server and the easiest way for me will be to accomplish this via iSCSI vmfs stores. I figured I would just use the ini that ships with CentOS but have never used it against ESX, anyone do this and have experiences they care to share? Should it be trivial or are there any non

Dell Perc snmp
I am trying to help a friend with a 2850 and snmp monitoring of a controller and its arrays. I don't have any dells, do they have a rpm to make easy work of this for the Percs? They have a monitoring solution already. Any hints I could pass on would be appreciated! Thanks, jlc

Network routes
I am unable to ping NE.TW.RKB.IP1 from an outside network. Other machines which do not have access or routes for NET.WOR.KA.0 respond just fine. How do I get it to respond on both NET.WOR.KA.0 and NE.TW.RKB.0 given all default traffic should go through NET.WOR.KA.1 unless it is in reply to traffic from NE.TW.RKB.1 or there is an outage.
