Centos 5.4 on Acer Aspire One
I currently have my Acer Aspire One netbook set up with Fedora 11. I would like to change it over to Centos 5.4 if I can. I downloaded the Centos 5.4 i386 livecd image and made a bootable USB flash drive out of it. Unfortunately, when I boot off of that flash drive, Grub (I guess) immediately turns the screen entirely white. If I hit a key I can faintly see the outline of "Press tab to

Centos 5 card reader automount
To this point, whenever I've plugged a storage device (flash drive, mp3 player) into a USB plug, it's magically mounted and I get an icon on my desktop. I've just got a card reader and it doesn't automount. I can mount it manually with "mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/temp" and that works fine. I would prefer to have it automount and give me the desktop icon. Unfortunately, I

simple website hit counter
Googling for this finds me a ton of stuff that doesn't actually do what I'm looking for. I want a simple hit counter cgi script of some kind that will increment a counter on every page load but I want to access the counter from a different page. In other words, I don't want to have a visible hit counter on the webpage itself. I want to have a different webpage that will show me the

X login screen fails on the first try
I set up a Centos 5 machine a couple of weeks ago and everything was working perfectly. It survived a few reboots and whatnot with no problem. I moved it to another location on Saturday afternoon and, again, it booted up and worked fine. It was rebooted this morning and now the graphical login screen doesn't appear. Everything appears to load normally but once the text login screen

how does the bootup screen move the cursor around?
While rebooting my computer after installing the new kernel a few minutes ago, I got to wondering about how the initial bootup screen (after grub, before rhgb) is constructed. The "Loading kernel blah blah blah" lines start at the top of the screen and proceed to scroll down as one would expect. But "kernel alive" shows up at the bottom of the screen and then more write-up is

Samsung M800
I have a Samsung M800 phone that I had (wrongly) assumed would show up as a USB drive on Linux so I can transfer files to it and so on. Instead, it appears to present itself as a modem. card reader issue
I have never done anything with a card reader before so I have no idea what I'm doing here. I have a laptop with a card reader in it and when I put the card in I see this in /var/log/messages: Feb 5 13:28:58 localhost pcscd: winscard.c:304:SCardConnect() Reader E-Gate 0 0 Not Found This comes up many times in the log. I suspect that this means that I'm missing some package that I

gtk+-2 and centos 5
I'm a bit confused about how to compile somethingon Centos 5 that's looking for gtk +-2. ./configure errors out with this message: checking for GTK+ - version >= 2.4.0... no *** Could not run GTK+ test program, checking why... *** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log for the *** exact error that occured. This usually means GTK+ is incorrectly installed.

remote desktop configuration
I manage some remote multi-user computers where it would be very handy to be able to "edit" the users' panel bars remotely, adding, removing and arranging applications and icons as needed. It's easy to put an icon on a user's desktop -- just write a .desktop file and put it into the user's Desktop directory. Can I do the same thing with the users' panel bars

Weird NFS problem
I have a weird NFS problem here. I am trying to set up a machine with Centos 5 on it. First time I've tried Centos, but it looks like it's going to be the real thing for some machines that I look after that are intended to be long-term "just works" application servers. I plan to start reading and participating in this mailing list now, so Hello to everyone! My name is Frank

"multi-boot" drive partitioning
I want to set up a multiple "mode" computer with four separate Centos installations on it. The objective here is to have a "spare computer" that I can boot up into any of four "modes" depending on what I'm swapping it in for a the moment. For example, I want to be able to boot it up as a webserver, or as a fileserver, or as a LTSP-enabled application server.

live audio feed via telephone link
I'm looking into costs and feasibility of moving a live feed from a FM radio station from the station to a point that's past the usable range of their radio signal. It's a rural location and Internet service is not available at the station. If the destination was closer or their transmitter was more powerful, I could avoid this step and just plug in a radio, but.... My best idea so

changing then main menu icon
What icon do I need to change or substitute (or what file should I edit) to get a custom icon for the Centos 5 main menu? I found a whole stack of "shadowman-*" icons, but nothing that says anything about "main menu". -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Melville Sask ~ http://www.melvilletheatre.com

SOLUTION: How to use a custom icon for the Main Menu on the panel
After much head-scratching I finally figured out how to get a custom icon for the Main Menu on the panel. For the benefit of anyone else who wants a custom icon: yum install gconf-editor Run gconf-editor and go to apps - panel - objects The main menu is one of the "object_0", "object_1" items. Just go through them until you find the one that is the Main Menu. Put a

Centos 5.5 on a Toshiba Satellite L1500D - Wireless networking - Realtek 8172
I just installed Centos 5.5 x86_64 on a new Toshiba Satellite L1500D. Everything seems to work (so far) other than the wireless networking; lscpi tells me: 0e:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. vnc - single application or a "remote localhost" on Firefox
Normally I use VNC-over-SSH to provide a complete desktop to a remote user. Is there a way to provide a single application to a user instead of a complete desktop? In this case I am looking for a method to provide remote report-viewing access to LedgerSMB for a company's outside accountant. LedgerSMB runs through a web browser (i.e. http://localhost/ledgersmb) so he doesn't need or want
