Backspace key does not work in a ssh chroot jail
I setup a ssh chroot jail following this[1] guide. It works for my user to login, use ls and use scp which is all I really want. I do have a problem I cannot solve: when connected and navigating the filesystem, the backspace key actually moves the cursor forward and does not delete what I type. I may have found a hint from some googling that readline will read in /etc/inputrc on login but if

Setting PS1 for ordinary users
CentOS-6 When I login as root I see this prompt: [root at vhost04 ~]# When I login as a non-priviledged user I see this instead: sh-4.1$ .bashrc and .bash_profile have identical contents in /root and /home/user. What causes the difference? Why? How does one change the default so that all normal users get a [userid at hostname pwd]$ prompt? I have loked in/etc/profile.d and /etc/bashrc

Gnome Desktop Screensaver Security Lock Override?
We deployed our first CentOS-4 based workstation this past spring to see if we can conveniently replace all, or at least most, of our MS-Win based user systems with Linux boxes instead. Generally this trial unit has proved a success but there is one lingering problem that I cannot seem to find a straight-forward answer to: Is there an administrator override to a user's password protected

Can one invoke multiple INSTANCEs of Firefox on CentOS
I am doing some testing with XForms and I really need a separate instance of Firefox, one that shares nothing with my primary instance that has various reference works and web sites open, to test forms. Is this even possible? I have a sense from the small bit of testing that I have done that even with separate profiles and invoking the firefox process manually from different terminal windows

Help with gnome terminal
I am experiencing a problem with gnome terminal, most likely caused by something that I have done and which I need to undo. The problem is that somehow the gnome configuration has been changed so that the "Contents" menu item under "Help" in Gnome Terminal has the character "space" mapped as a keyboard accelerator. I would prefer that this be mapped to just about

Pressing either Ctrl-\ of Ctrl-4 core dumps R
When running R from the terminal on Linux (Ubuntu 16.04), it core dumps whenever / wherever I press Ctrl-4 or Ctrl-\. You get thrown back to the terminal with "Quit (core dump)" being the only message. Grepping the R source code, it doesn't look like that message is generated by R itself. Over on Twitter, it has been confirmed to also happen on macOS. $ R -d valgrind --vanilla

SSH in and my terminal keystrokes are weird.......
Hi All, I upgraded to OS X 10.7 on my laptop and when I try to ssh into my servers and do edits it seems my backspace is now weird. When I backspace it skips all around, inserts what looks to be special characters, etc. If I save and go back in the file edited right, but due to all the inserted garbage and skipping around of the cursor I cant tell at that time if what I did worked. I dont recall

Gnome Desktop Questions?
I have a couple of oddities that I hope someone here can clarify for me. OS = CentOS-5.2 all updates applied to date. 1. On the gnome desktop in the top panel (or menu bar) I have an icon for "System Monitor" which runs the application "gnome-system-monitor". On my other desktop CentOS-5.2 system I have the same thing. However, one one system the icon gives me a real time

EOL in stderr of ssh - Linux
Hello everyone, recently I've found something I consider a bug. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought that Linux' EOL is 0x0A. Imagine my surprise when I saw that all messages that are being output on to the stderr (on any Linux I've tested - Fedora and Ubuntu) are terminated with 0x0D, 0x0A. Maybe that's standard behaviour of all stderr messages in all Linux

Scripting a directory change on CentOS
This is probably a FAQ item but despite searching extensively with google I am unable to find an answerer to this question. Perhaps I am using the wrong words. In any case, at the risk of inducing some mirth at my ignorance, how can one script a cd command so that that the user remains in that directory when the script exits? I have to work with a long path to a project working directory and I

[UART] GPS 18-5Hz LVC and COM1 silence, OK on Linux though...
Hi, I'm having issues connecting Garmin GPS 18 to COM1 on 9.1, I get nothing but silence. Identical setup works absolutely fine with Linux. I've got PPS wire connected to DCD, but that seems to make no difference on Linux, so I presume it shouldn't affect fbsd either. On Linux, I get: $ uname -a Linux ubuntu 3.8.0-19-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 17 18:16:28 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64

R and xterm
Howdy! I have a problem that's similar to one discussed earlier on the list: When not in xterm all the backspace and cursor-movements and stuff are working well. Only when I start R in an xterm window backspace appears as ^H and so on. What can I do? gnome-desktop on Centos-6.3
I have installed a minimal kvm host system. I wish to provide a graphical login on the host. To this end I performed the following group installs: yum groupinstall "general purpose desktop" "x windows system" I can login on the host system as root and then run 'startx' which gives me a desktop, sort of. The top menu bar with the various tool sets is missing as is

Gnome desktop, workspaces and windows
I was editing a file in gvim when I inadvertently pressed some key combination that caused the vim window to disappear from the desktop. I looked in ps and found that it was still running. Checking the tool bar at the bottom of my display I noticed that a large rectangle now occupied the second of four boxes on the extreme right hand side. Clicking on that box brought back the gvim instance but

Prompt for chrooted users
We have a requirement to allow ssh access to a server in order to provide a secure link to one of our legacy systems. I would like to chroot these accounts. I have this working except for one small detail, the user's prompt in the ssh session. Each user has their shell set to /bin/bash in /etc/passwd. However, instead of getting the prompt defined in their .bash_profiles we see this:

usb to usb comm ports - possible? how?
I have an i686 mono core system configured as a CentOS-5.2 server. It has one DB9P RS-232 serial connector and six USB connectors. The DB9p is configuered as STTY0 for the attached MultiTec MT5638ZBA fax modem. I would very much like to connect my MS WindowsXPpro laptop, which only has USB connectors, to this server via telnet or ssh over a direct connection. Is there a way to connect /
