Missing /etc/log/rpmpkgs
On one system I am missing /etc/log/rpmpkgs
I believe that this file is updated by some cron job, and maybe I just
have not had this system powered up at the right time for the job to
run. Though I had thought that if a job was scheduled for a time the
computer was off, it would run sometime soon (with some definition of
'soon') once the system was on again.
On another system, I

Fedora and CentOS no longer on speaking terms
I have just upgraded my server from CentOS 5 to CentOS 6 and am having
connectivity problems. My laptop runs Fedora 14, and I have been in the habit
of mounting data partitions on my server by fstab entries. Since the update
I've not been able to do that. On watching the messages during a reboot I saw
a statement that the connection was denied by the server (where are those

nfs4 help needed
Fedora 13 is using nfs4, and there is a problem in opening files requiring
OpenOffice if accessed over an nfs3 mount, so it's time to change. I found a
couple of tutorials, and got it *almost* working correctly. This is where I
need help.
Logwatch tells me
/nfs4exports/Data1 and /Data1 have same filehandle for
*,192.168.0.0/24,192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0, using first

CentOS for non-tech user
I'm thinking of giving CentOS to a non-tech user for her new desktop. He
needs are small. She has been used to Mozilla for both mail and browsing, so
equivalents there are not a problem. She needs grip and lame, for her mp3s -
again no problem. In fact the only problem I can see is that gwenview doesn't
appear to have the kipi-plugins. I can see libkipi listed, but no plugins,

Dial plan suggestions
Hello all,
I've been asked to look into my home dial plan to see if I can improve
it by an important customer (my wife).
What we would like to have happen is that an inbound call rings all the
phones (This is done). Once one phone picks up, of course all the others
stop ringing (Also done). Here's the gotcha. She doesnt like having to
"transfer" calls to another phone;

The case of the missing mail
I became suspicious that I should have received a certain message, and reading
pm.log I discovered that it had indeed arrived and had been allocated to
/var/mail/anne, despite procmailrc telling it that
MAILDIR=/home/anne/Maildir/
Any idea what might have caused this? It seems to have been working like this
only in the last 24 hours or so.

Login user doesn't exist: dovecot
After completely trashing my system a few days ago, I now have FC4
running, and have compiled dovecot-1.-beta1. Everything is placed in a
different place from the debian install, so it's possible that I have a
path problem.
Attempting to start dovecot in a root console brings up the line

Second user problems
I have dovecot (0.99.14 under FC4) set up and working beautifully for my mail,
handing on to procmail, and handling many subfolders. Today I needed to set
up a second user. I added his account in kmail and created a sub-folder, but
no sent-mail, trash etc. were created. I have sent test messages
and /var/log/maillog says they have been processed, but they are not arriving
in his inbox.

sd_max_throttle
Hello,
we are using hardware array and its vendor recommends the following setting in
/etc/system:
set sd:sd_max_throttle = <value>
or
set ssd:ssd_max_throttle = <value>
Is it possible to monitor *somehow* whether the variable becomes
sort of bottleneck ? Or how its value influences io traffic ?

64-bit CentOS - your experience
Hello,
one of our developers is developing his Web applications (PHP-based+MySql) on 64-bit Fedora. He would like to use the same, 64-bit environment on CentOS. I am not against 64-bits (we use it for many, many years using Solaris) but what concerns me is the stability of 64-bit Linux. Can you share your experience regarding stability of 32-bit and 64-bit CentOS ? Does anybody use 64-bit CentOS

You don't say, but if this is CentOS 7, then cron.daily/weekly/monthly
is run using anacron, not cron.
It's configured in /etc/anacrontab and is usually run once a day by the
script /etc/cron.hourly/0anacron - cron.hourly is still run by cron.
If the script doesn't exist, then

Plain password not authenticating
I'm trying to set up a temporary mailserver using Debian Sarge and
Dovecot 1.0 with maildir format. My only previous experience has been
on a simple imap server.
I have read the wiki documentation and searched the archives, but can't
tie down my problem. The log tells me

I have set

Low-memory Centos5?
Good morning,
I've inherited an old laptop from my wife that I'd like to
use when I travel (it's fairly small with a 12" screen). The
bad part is that it is maxed out on memory with 384MB.
Has anyone played with using Centos5 on systems with
little memory? Ideally, I don't need too much - Firefox,
Openoffice, a little Perl/Python/C here and there. I was
thinking about using

Not receiving root mail
Although I have the alias defined in /etc/aliases and /etc/postfix/aliases,
I'm not receiving root mail. Following the previous thread about unreceived
logwatch mail, I tested with a manual run of logwatch, and found that my ISP
is rejecting the mail because it is seeing an envelope carrying my local
address. My suspicion is that the mail is going out via sendmail instead of
