Another system with no sound
I am also having an issue with no sound on some CentOS desktop systems. I manage about 3 dozen desktops. Kickstart with all the latest updates?
Currently, I kickstart my machines over http to install CentOS 4.4 and then in a script called from %post do a "yum -y update" to install all the latest updates. Is there a way to set up the kickstart server so that I can do this all in one step? In other words, is there a "supported" way to roll in all the updates into the kickstart server? In case it matters, I

Kickstart syntax for CentOS upgrade
I'd like to automate the upgrade from CentOS 4.6 to 5.1 as much as possible. Since upgrades per se are not really recommended, I'm planning to do a kickstart installation. However, I want to leave one of the existing partitions (/scratch) untouched during the installation. Here is my current layout (LogVol00 is swap so not shown in the df output below): # df -hl

Received signal 11 during kickstart
I recently built a CentOS from the 4.3 ISOs. Now I'm ready to build another 10 systems using kickstart. I took the anaconda-ks.cfg file from the first system I built manually, modified it slightly (see below), and made it available via http. I booted the new system from the first CentOS 4.3 CD and typed the following: boot: linux ks=http://hostname/test-ks.cfg Here are the

Very slow disk performance on CentOS 4.5
I recently moved my CentOS 4.5 disk from a Lenovo ThinkCentre M52 (3.2 GHz Pentium 4) to a Lenovo ThinkCentre M55 (3.4 GHz Core 2 Duo). I had to install the SMP kernel, but other than that everything just worked. I did have an issue with accidentally initializing my /boot partition, but that was my own fault. But the system was not feeling right. Some things just seemed to be slower,

First attempt to use DMI in a com32 module
This is a first attempt to make the DMI table accessible in a com32 module. This patch applies to the latest syslinux (3.20-pre11). It will add some headers in com32/include/dmi and three files in com32/modules/. dmi.c This is the core program that makes the dmi tables accessible. dmi_utils.c Just a small util file to display some more complicated messages dmitest.c The program

Error trying to mount NFS volume from kickstart in CentOS 5
The post section of the kickstart configuration file I have been using in CentOS4 looks like this: %post mount centosmirror:/var/www/html/ks /mnt /mnt/ks/post/post.sh > /root/post_install.log 2>&1 umount /mnt I tried to do my first CentOS 5 kickstart installation today using an identical post section, but the post install script did not run. Remote Desktop on CentOS 5.3
Does anyone have remote desktop connectivity working in CentOS 5.3? I'm using the Gnome desktop and have configured the Remote Deskop Preferences to "Allow other users to view your desktop" and "Allow other users to control your desktop". The configuration dialog box says that "Users can view your desktop using this command: vncviewer

"busy hang" on e2fsck (on a ext3 partition)
(There really doesn't seem to be a dedicated e2fsprogs list, so this was the next-best place I could find. I don't place much faith in the sourceforge forums..) The filesystem in question is a 480 gig ext3 partition, on a hardware RAID5 controller. It's approximately 90% full, with something like 115K files. Kernel 2.4.20-pre4, on a Duron 900. As I type this, e2fsck has used up

Strange system hangs
I've had a couple of complete system hangs on two different systems in the last couple of weeks. The first time it happened I shrugged it off, but now that it has happened a second time on a different system I need to investigate this a bit. further All the systems are identical: IBM (Lenovo) ThinkCentre M52 with 3GB of memory, running CentOS 4.4 with all the recent updates. The

How to configure user accounts without NIS
The company where I work is mostly a Windows shop, but I run a few CentOS servers and desktops. I have configured my systems as follows with Kickstart: authconfig --enablemd5 --passalgo=sha512 --enablenis --nisdomain=XXX \ --nisserver=nis1.XXX.com,nis2.XXX.com --useshadow --enablekrb5 \ --krb5realm=XXX.COM --krb5kdc=ldap.XXX.com --krb5adminserver=ldap.XXX.com The /etc/nsswitch.conf file

Help integrating CentOS 6 with existing network login infrastructure
I've updated my kickstart configuration files to work with CentOS 6 and am most of the way there integrating a CentOS 6 system into our LDAP/NIS environment. My authconfig line in the kickstart file is as follows: authconfig --enablemd5 --passalgo=sha512 --enablenis --nisdomain=XXX --nisserver=nis.XXX.com --useshadow --enablekrb5 --krb5realm=XXX.COM --krb5kdc=ldap.XXX.com

Problem getting eth0 up
I'm just starting to test CentOS 6 in our environment, and as a first step did a basic install from DVD (Desktop target, all defaults). Next I will try to automate the installations as I did for CentOS 5 using the anakonda-ks.cfg file generated by the manual install. However, I can't wrap my brain around the new NetworkManager to get it to configure the eth0 interface to obtain an IP

Centos 5.3 - kickstart configuration
Over the last couple of weeks, additional software was installed using the package manager. I would like to get a custom kickstart file created for our system. For this, I would like to get complete list of software installed so they may be add to the kickstart file package selection. Can anyone tell me if this can be done? If it can, please give me instructions? Finally, where on

General CentOS 5.1 (or Gnome) instability?
I've been a big fan of CentOS for a while, and didn't have many issues with CentOS 4.X over the past few years. However, since moving to CentOS 5.1 a few weeks ago, I have received more problem reports from my users than in the last year and a half on CentOS 4.X. I've previously reported the problem with gnome-terminal crashing (and since there is a single gnome-terminal

Best way to integrate CentOS in Windows AD environment
We currently use a combination of Kerberos and NIS to manage users on our CentOS 6 systems in a Windows AD environment. NIS is provided by Windows Services for UNIX (or something named similarly), which has some issues, and is also not going to be supported by Microsoft in the future. NIS supplies the passed file as well as the auto mount map for home directories as shown by this excerpt from

CentOS 5 sysreport
I stumbled across this issue because I requested to install the sysreport package in my kickstart file. Anaconda complains that such a package doesn't exist. There is a bug report about this already (http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2492), but it's certainly a strange situation. 1. Anaconda doesn't think the package sysreport exists 2. yum thinks it exists:

Kickstart stopped working
I've been using kickstart for a while now, but today I tried to kickstart a system and it's just not working at all. I can't figure out why it's hanging. I booted from the CentOS 4.5 CD #1 and typed "linux ks=http:// centosmirror/ks/sys20.cfg". If I check my web server's log, I can see that sys20.cfg was accessed. This file begins with the following
