Wrapper script for shutdown, passwd, etc. commands
Hello all. Thank you for reading. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. I am looking to implement a wrapper script/utility that will prompt for a ticket number before running certain commands. I've used similar scripts in the past on systems that I didn't have admin access. The wrapper would do something like this: [root at vm-helios-019] shutdown -h now

Battery condition tools CentOS/Dell
Hello all: Does anyone know of a tool/project that will allow me to read the battery condition (not the charge status) on a Dell laptop battery? Under XP there is a utility that warns that the battery is still holding a charge but that the battery is degraded and should be replaced. Also, not sure if this is possible, but I would like to control how the laptop charges the battery. I tend to

Linux ate my RAM...
Hello everyone, Excuse the title. I'm trying to do something very specific that goes against some common assumptions. I am aware of how Linux uses available memory to cache. This, in almost all cases, is desirable. I've spent years explaining to users how to properly read the free output. I'm now trying to increase VM density on host systems (by host, I mean the physical system, not

Re-exporting an NFS mount.. Possible?
I have an issue that is not all that unique, so I'm hoping someone has done it before. On the client end I have some very old RedHat based systems. On the server end is a Windows 2008 system running NFS server software. The clients mount the server resource as an NFS2 mount but some compliance issues were discovered with the setup. For various reasons, updating the client is not an option at

KVM host question about host firewall
Hello All: I'll ask this in the virt list later if this is not the appropriate forum... Yesterday I was troubleshooting an issue with a KVM host. I was unable to access the DNS service on a KVM virtual machine. After verifying that the vm allowed through the DNS ports (53 on UDP/TCP) and still being unable to access, I was able to connect immediately after allowing those ports on the

CentOS to RedHat and vice versa
Has anyone ever tried to mass replace installed RedHat RPMS with their equivalent CentOS versions or vice versa? I was thinking of generating a list of all packages and then running RPM or yum with a 'replace' option. The reason for doing this: Years ago I was tasked with building a RHEL4 system. Budgeting, time constraints, the lunar cycle, etc.., prevented the purchase of an equivalent

Just curious... CentOS4 lifetime tracks RHEL4 somewhat... Since RedHat has announced LTS (Long Term Support) for RHEL4, are there plans to extend the CentOS 4 support window?

kickstart and logins.def question
Hello all: Happy New Year to everyone and thank you for all the knowledge this past year. I have a hopefully simple question about kickstart. In the authconfig section I can enable ldap, credential caching, etc.. Using the GUI tool there's an option to create the user home directories on first login. The docs don't show a similar option for authconfig in kickstart. For now I'm

Hello: I'm trying to track down a kio_http problem using CentOS 6.4 with KDE. This causes multiple kio_http procs to spawn and lots of notifications. Several steps are needed: Create a foo.html with an href foo.html <html><head>Test</head><body><a href=http://ovh.com>http://ovh.com</a></body></html> [^] Use html2ps then ps2pdf to create a PDF

Sieve & Public folders issue (2nd episode)
Hello Community, Getting back to my previous post, here a a complement: - Having enabled sieve, I can store mails and create folder under the recipient - Having enabled public folders, I can move mail into them using a client (eg Thunderbird); security is therefore ok (actually I gave full control to the user) eg Public/Newsletters/SomeCompany - *BUT* running a sieve script to store to
